Chapter 1292: Muggle-Born Registration
Chapter 1292: Muggle-Born Registration
"Muggle-born registration? I can't believe they've come up with something like this. I bet the whole of Britain is in an uproar right now."
On the lawn, Katrina placed the newspaper beside the picnic blanket and glanced at Albert, who was playing with Alice. She then turned her gaze to Isabelle, who was stretching and practicing yoga nearby, as she commented on the latest explosive news in the Prophet.
"This is most likely Umbridge's doing. She's the kind of person who would come up with something like this."
Albert summoned a house-elf and asked it to push Alice's stroller to find Mrs. McDougal. With her ample free time aside from compiling treatment books, Mrs. McDougal was more than happy to spend time with her granddaughter.
No one liked to be alone.
Isabelle took the towel that Albert handed her and wiped the non-existent sweat from her forehead, raising an eyebrow as she asked, "Who benefits the most, and therefore is the most suspicious?"
"Umbridge must have done a lot to please the Death Eaters and the mysterious wizards to gain favor with the new government."
"Do you know her well?"
"Yes," Albert nodded. "When she was the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, I made sure to find out more about her."
Albert introduced her to the two women, "Umbridge has always wanted to associate herself with a pure-blood wizarding family and has claimed that her late father was a notable figure in the Wizengamot. I bet she'll modify her records to solidify this connection and improve her standing among the Death Eaters."
"So, she's a Muggle-born witch?" Katrina asked curiously.
"No, she's a half-blood," Albert shook his head. "Her father, Alford, used to work as a janitor for the Ministry of Magic, her mother, Ellen Cracknell, was a Muggle, and she herself is a half-blood witch with no connection to the Selwyn family."
However, in Albert's opinion, with Umbridge's style and attitude, as long as she had a decent background, she was a natural Death Eater. Perhaps she would even have the chance to be personally branded with the Dark Mark by Voldemort himself.
If there was anyone in the Harry Potter story who was most suited to be a Death Eater, it was undoubtedly Umbridge. Even the Malfoy family would have to step aside.
"You've certainly dug up a lot of dirt on Umbridge. It must be dangerous to have you as an enemy." Katrina's expression was peculiar, and she suddenly felt a bit of sympathy for Umbridge. Thinking about the pink toad's experiences at Hogwarts, she didn't believe that Umbridge would have a pleasant outcome now that Albert had his eyes on her again.
"You're planning to expose Umbridge's background through the Wizarding Wireless Network and socially ruin her, aren't you?" Isabelle knew her husband too well.
"People have the right to know the truth," Albert shrugged. "No one dared to do this before because they feared Umbridge's retaliation, and she certainly retaliated and tried to make everyone believe her version of the story."
"But times have changed now. Since we are enemies, it doesn't matter anymore. Anyway, whether it's the Aurors from the Ministry or the Death Eaters, they won't be able to storm into a safe house protected by the Fidelius Charm, confiscate the radio, and silence that damn broadcaster."
As for seeking out Lee Jordan's family to silence him? Unfortunately, that wouldn't work either.
After confirming that their son had a promising future with Albert, Lee Jordan's family had collectively gone into hiding not long ago to avoid any potential backlash in Britain. After all, the example of what happened to the Weasleys was right there.
"I think you should stay away from Britain for now," Isabelle suddenly said. "Not only is there a 20,000 Galleon bounty on your head, but you've also made quite a few enemies."
"Don't worry, I'm very careful and rarely show my face," Albert reassured her. "I usually stay in safe houses protected by the Fidelius Charm, so my safety is guaranteed."
"I suspect the mysterious wizard has his eyes on you, especially after you rescued the Weasley couple recently," Isabelle said, although she hadn't met Voldemort herself, it wasn't difficult to make that deduction. "He's not stupid. I'm sure he senses the threat you pose to him, and he'll do everything in his power to eliminate you before you become as powerful as Dumbledore."
"When people scheme and plot against someone with all their might, it's very difficult for that person to escape unscathed, even if you can foresee the future, you're still dancing on the blade's edge," Isabelle wanted Albert to understand the severity of his situation.
In the past, Albert had always wanted to use Harry Potter as a shield, but now he had become the shield himself.
There was no other way; the things Albert had done were simply too remarkable. Even if he wanted to hide, it would be difficult.
Unless he went missing.
This was actually the main reason why Albert had been able to remain calm and composed in the face of various situations up to this point.
Neither the mysterious wizard nor the Death Eaters could find him, and without knowing his whereabouts, it was challenging for them to specifically target him with their schemes.
However, Isabelle was well aware of what it would mean if Albert started to actively move about in Britain, and she believed that Albert understood this as well.
But Isabelle still hoped that her husband would prioritize his safety because even the most powerful wizard could be ambushed and killed by the Avada Kedavra curse, as Dumbledore's case had proven.
"Don't worry, dear."
Albert was comforted by Isabelle's words. She always reminded him to maintain the highest level of vigilance, especially after he had made certain promises. He knew that staying alive was crucial! Especially for someone like Albert.
It would be a disgrace for a time traveler to die despite having all the advantages.
"I wish we could receive the broadcasts from the Wizarding Wireless Network here!"
Unfortunately, they were currently in a distant sea far from Britain and couldn't receive any British broadcasts.
However, the three of them could still predict the situation in Britain.
As Katrina had said, with the British Ministry of Magic's policy adjustments, the mysterious wizard had finally shown his true colors to the people.
"Muggle-born registration" instantly became a hot topic in the British magical community and even gained support from a portion of the pure-blood wizards.
Very few dared to stand up and voice their opposition.
The first victims were the Muggle-born witches and wizards working for the Ministry of Magic. They might have heard the broadcasts from the Wizarding Wireless Network, but those who hadn't left the Ministry in time were the first to be "invited" for an interview with the Muggle-born Registration Commission.
Before they knew it, they were being escorted by Aurors on the way to Azkaban.
All Muggle-born witches and wizards working for the Ministry were affected. They were purged from the Ministry on the very day the Muggle-born registration was announced.
In the words of the Death Eaters, they were purifying the Ministry, getting rid of the stench of Muggle-borns.
However, such a significant event did not cause much turmoil in the magical community, not only because all the news was forcibly suppressed, but also because of the attitude of the wizarding families who remained neutral. Although they sympathized with the plight of the Muggle-born witches and wizards, the most they could offer was everything but help.
As a result, most Muggle-borns were still waiting to see what this "Muggle-born registration" was all about. They held on to a glimmer of hope or waited for the next broadcast from the Wizarding Wireless Network, hoping to gain useful information. Only a small number of Muggle-born witches and wizards who had decided to refuse the registration had already fled.
