Chapter 129: The Case and Sniffles
Chapter 129: The Case and Sniffles
In the days that followed, Kyle no longer spent the entire day searching for the leopard cat. Instead, at Tina's request, he freed up his mornings to join her in baking cookies or small breads.
Sometimes, he would also help Newt take care of the other magical creatures in the case.
Only in the afternoons would he go to learn from the leopard cat.
However, progress remained slow, and for a long time, there was no improvement, as if something was always missing.
And so, another week passed.
A week later, when Kyle arrived at the lakeside clearing, he was surprised to find that the leopard cat, Nadari, was not waiting for him as usual.
"Did I come too early?" Kyle mumbled.
"No, your training is over."
Just then, Tina and Newt approached together, with the leopard cat by their side.
"In fact, several days ago, Nadari could no longer see what you were thinking." Newt explained, "Her attacks afterward were entirely based on instinct."
Kyle frowned, "Instinct?"
"Yes." Newt said, "If you don't believe me, let's do a little test."
He took out two apples, one large and one small, from the iron bucket he was carrying and said to Kyle and the leopard cat named Nadari, "Make a choice, both of you together."
The leopard cat glanced at Kyle, and then they both pointed to the larger apple.
Kyle turned his head, puzzled.
Newt's face suddenly reddened.
"Ahem, it's a coincidence." He said, dumping the entire bucket of apples onto the ground, "Now, let's try choosing again."
The leopard cat glanced at Kyle once more, but this time, they each pointed to different apples.
The same thing happened when they tried again.
Newt visibly relaxed and took out his wand, returning the apples on the ground to the bucket, intending to send them to the invisible beasts later.
"Now do you believe me?"
"Yes, I do." Kyle nodded.
If the leopard cat could still see his thoughts, this situation wouldn't have occurred.
Kyle followed them back to the room and asked curiously, "Did you figure this out a long time ago?"
"About a week ago." Tina said, "Are you going to ask me why I didn't tell you sooner?"
Kyle nodded.
"I wanted to confirm it, and it looks like you've indeed mastered it pretty well. Also..."
Tina couldn't help but laugh and said, "You've always performed excellently before, and it's quite interesting to see you stumble once in a while."
"Um..."
Kyle twitched his mouth and looked at Tina, who was already ninety years old this year, helplessly.
What a strange sense of humor.
Nevertheless, learning the Mind-Blocking Charm was undoubtedly a good thing.
After that, Kyle stayed there for three more days until a week before the school term started, when he left.
Newt didn't write to Chris but instead sent Kyle home himself. Before leaving, he gave Kyle a case.
"It's your birthday present."
Newt said, "I prepared it earlier, but you've been busy learning the Mind-Blocking Charm, so I could only give it to you now. I hope it's not too late."
Kyle excitedly took the case.
It looked one size smaller than Newt's, but it was new and fashionable, obviously made recently.
"The space inside isn't huge, but it should be enough for you.
After Newt left, Kyle immediately turned around and headed home.
With Chris and Diana absent, the living room felt spacious and empty.
Without pausing, Kyle made his way upstairs to his room, where he eagerly placed the case on the floor and opened it, jumping in.
Beneath the case was a modest-sized room that contained nothing but a simple shelf.
Outside the room stretched a vast grassland, roughly twice the size of a Quidditch pitch, with a small lake nestled in its center.
Compared to Newt's, this space was indeed minuscule, but it was more than enough for Kyle.
After all, he was only twelve years old and still studying at Hogwarts; he had no need for such a vast area yet.
Kyle strolled across the grass, envisioning and planning as he went.
"This spot is good... Once I learn the Weather-Modifying Charm, I can set up a few rocks as a nest for the Mooncalf, and there's room nearby to grow Devil's Snare, too."
"This area is nice as well, close to the water source. I can transplant the Mimbulus mimbletonia over here."
"As for the ordinary plants like the Gillyweed, I don't need to be too particular about their placement. Anywhere near the Mooncalf will do."
"And those few trees in the distance, the Bowtruckles will surely love it there."
As he walked, Kyle soon reached the lake in the center of the grassland. Looking at the shimmering surface of the water, he unconsciously took a small step back.
But the next second, Kyle shook off his hesitation... What was there to fear? The leopard cat wasn't here.
The lake was crystal clear, its bottom visible, and a few lionfish swam leisurely within it.
Just as Kyle prepared to explore further, he suddenly felt something tugging at his robe pocket.
He lowered his head, and a palm-sized creature appeared before his eyes.
It had black fur, a small, flat bill-like mouth resembling a duck's beak, but overall, it looked like a mole.
"Sniffles...?" Kyle exclaimed in surprise.
He hadn't expected a bonus gift inside the case.
This Sniffles seemed to have just been born recently, so tiny that it was smaller than Kyle's hand.
Currently, it was clinging to his robe, its tiny hands struggling to stuff a Galleon into its pocket.
Kyle didn't stop it, merely watching quietly until Sniffles was just about to succeed. Then, he casually reached out and took the Galleon out again.
Along with it, he picked up the tiny creature as well.
The little guy held onto the Galleon tightly, and Kyle had to shake it several times before it finally let go.
"How did you get here?" Kyle asked curiously.
If Newt had wanted to give him Sniffles, he would have done so in person instead of hiding it in the case. So, this little guy must have sneaked over on his own.
Perhaps due to its young age, Sniffles tilted its head as if it didn't understand what Kyle was saying. It continued to clutch the Galleon and attempted a high-difficulty maneuver similar to a pull-up to get the coin into its pocket.
