Chapter 126: Learning the Mind-Shutting Spell
Chapter 126: Learning the Mind-Shutting Spell
In the rundown seaside shack, Harry Potter spent one of the most wonderful nights of his life.
The next morning, he was reluctant to wake up, as if fearing that it had all been an incredible dream.
In this dream, a large owl delivered his acceptance letter to a magic school, followed by the arrival of a giant named Hagrid who proclaimed him a wizard and used magical punishment on his bullying cousin, Dudley.
He was afraid that opening his eyes would reveal that he was still in his small storage room at home.
If he could, he wanted to stay in this dream forever.
Until Hagrid woke him up.
"Wake up, Harry. Now's not the time to sleep in."
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, Hagrid opened the window and let in an owl carrying a newspaper in its beak, which he purchased for five Knuts.
"What's that, Hagrid?" Harry asked curiously.
"The Daily Prophet, the newspaper of the wizarding world. All witches and wizards read it."
Stretching lazily, Hagrid continued, "We'd better get going, Harry. We have a lot to do today. We need to go to London to get everything you'll need for school, and I also want to buy a couple of birthday gifts."
"Birthday gifts?"
"One for you and one for Kyle," Hagrid said. "It's quite a coincidence that his birthday is also today."
The mention of a birthday gift for himself filled Harry with excitement, causing his heart to skip a beat. But he soon focused on the other name Hagrid had mentioned, blinking as he asked, "Who's Kyle?"
"Another young wizard at Hogwarts, but a year older than you."
Hagrid had already dressed and booted. "He's a kind-hearted lad and well-liked by his peers. The professors and students at school all hold him in high regard.
By the way, he's also an excellent student. He's the only young wizard in Hogwarts' near three-century history to receive the Special Contribution Award for Outstanding Services to the School as a first-year student. If all goes well, he might also become the youngest recipient of the Order of Merlin.
If you ever encounter any troubles or have any questions at school, don't hesitate to seek him out. He'll surely help you."
As they spoke, the pair made their way out to the rocks by the shore.
Harry blinked, sensing Hagrid's fondness for this 'Kyle', and indeed, he sounded like an exceptional person.
Though he didn't understand the titles mentioned, Hagrid's tone made it clear that they were significant achievements.
"Kyle..." Harry mumbled to himself, his mind painting a picture of what the other boy might look like.
Having never met a wizard before, Harry's imagination drew from wizarding television programs, combined with Hagrid's appearance... Soon, an image formed in his mind.
He pictured a boy wearing a pointed hat and a pure black... or perhaps red or blue cloak. He held a gem-encrusted wooden stick and wore a stern expression, with a dead ferret wrapped around his waist...
"Achoo!"
In the village of St. Catchpole, Kyle suddenly sneezed while eating breakfast.
"Dear, are you catching a cold?" Chris asked concernedly.
"No, I just felt a tickle in my nose suddenly." Kyle rubbed his nose, not giving it much thought, attributing it to being around too many owls.
He wondered who had let his birthday be known, as owls carrying beautifully wrapped boxes had been arriving at his room since dawn.
"It seems you're quite popular at school," Diana remarked with a smile. "So many presents!"
"Mom, have you forgotten which house I'm in?" Kyle picked up a piece of bread and shrugged. "Hufflepuffs are known for their friendliness. It's normal to have lots of friends."
Diana just smiled without saying anything.
Kyle glanced at the parcel next to him, recognizing it as being from Jordan Lee. From its shape, he guessed it was probably a cake.
This was one of the most common gifts he had received, with over a dozen more already stacked in the room upstairs.
Unless something changed, these cakes would likely be his daily meals for the next few days, along with the Weasley kids, he imagined.
Ginny would probably be delighted.
Kyle shook his head with a bitter smile and picked up another sausage.
After breakfast, Chris pulled Kyle aside and said, "We've thought about what you asked yesterday."
Kyle was initially startled but then looked at Chris expectantly. "Do you agree to teach me?"
"Of course, we have no reason to refuse," Chris replied. "But... can you tell us why you want to learn the Mind-Shutting Spell? You should know that this particular branch of magic is extremely difficult to master. Not just for a first or second-year student like yourself, but even many adult wizards struggle with it."
"It's because of Oren," Kyle hesitated before answering. "In the Forbidden Forest, I felt like he could guess what I was thinking. It was an awful feeling."
Oren was just an excuse.
The Mind-Shutting Spell was currently the only known magic capable of defending against external spiritual infiltration, and Kyle was determined to master it.
Additionally, if he wanted to understand Horcruxes, he would inevitably have to interact with the notebook and the crown, which also required proficiency in the Mind-Shutting Spell.
Given Voldemort's expertise in soul magic, attempting to handle Horcruxes without this defense would likely result in his thoughts being exposed to the Dark Lord.
In fact, Kyle had already started trying to learn this magic last year, but his progress had been slow.
Just as Chris had said, the Mind-Shutting Spell was not easy to pick up, and without a teacher, self-study was incredibly challenging. It had taken Kyle half a semester just to reach the beginner's level.
And this level of proficiency in the Mind-Shutting Spell would clearly be insufficient against Voldemort's Horcruxes.
"Oren?"
Hearing this name, Chris felt a headache coming on.
Over the past month, he had been racking his brains trying to recall this incident, but aside from the rescue operation ten years ago, he couldn't think of any other interaction with the man.
Chris sighed. "If you're sure you want to learn it, we can teach you."
"I'm sure," Kyle nodded. "So, when do we start? After you get off work?"
"No, you won't be learning from us," Chris said mysteriously. "If it's the Mind-Shutting Spell you want to master, we've found the most suitable teacher for you, and they will definitely agree to teach you."
"A teacher?"
