Chapter 1250: Death of a Traitor
Chapter 1250: Death of a Traitor
Late at night, shadowy figures cut through the air, crossing the translucent defensive barrier surrounding the old manor and appearing directly in its grand hall.
Malfoy cowered, awestruck by the sight of Voldemort and his Death Eaters, shrouded in dark magic. He would have made a fool of himself in front of the Dark Lord if Snape hadn't held him back.
"Severus, it seems you bring good news," Voldemort said, his eyes narrowing as he regarded the four individuals in the room.
"Yes, my Lord," Snape replied, raising his head to meet Voldemort's emotionless, crimson eyes. "I have completed my task and successfully killed Albus Dumbledore!" He quickly explained the reason for summoning the Dark Lord using the Dark Mark.
As soon as he finished speaking, whispers filled the room as the others stared at Snape in disbelief. They couldn't fathom that he had managed to kill Dumbledore.
Albus Dumbledore—the greatest enemy the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters had ever faced.
"You've done well," Voldemort said, pleased. With Dumbledore dead, nothing stood in his way.
Noticing Snape's hesitant expression, Voldemort asked, "What else?"
"When we were evacuating Hogwarts, we were ambushed by Albert Anderson," Snape continued, lowering his head further. "Aside from the four of us, the others..."
A chilling aura emanated from Voldemort's crimson eyes, causing the surrounding Death Eaters to bow their heads.
The loss was devastating. Aside from those who had accompanied the Dark Lord to Azkaban, the rest of the Death Eaters had gone to Hogwarts with Bellatrix to assassinate Dumbledore. Yet, only Snape and three others had returned, having lost the rest to the mudblood.
Defeated by a mudblood.
"My Lord, Bellatrix and her group tried to ambush the mudblood..." Avery began, but he was interrupted by the Cruciatus Curse, causing him to writhe in pain on the floor. "Be wary of the mudblood, my Lord. He is nearly as powerful as Dumbledore himself."
"Alecto, tell me what happened," Voldemort said, turning to his spy within Snape's group.
Alecto Carrow recounted the events: They had sneaked into Hogwarts using Mr. Malfoy's Vanishing Cabinet and lured Dumbledore to the Astronomy Tower by releasing the Dark Mark. Bellatrix and her group had successfully surrounded Dumbledore, but it seemed he had known they were coming. Snape had betrayed them, warning Dumbledore of the impending assassination attempt.
At this, all eyes turned to Snape.
"We attacked Dumbledore together, having consumed the Felix Felicis, but we were still no match for him," Alecto continued. "In the end, I fled the tower with three others and waited in the Forbidden Forest for Snape, as he had mentioned using us as bait. We needed to confirm if he had truly betrayed you, my Lord."
"Dumbledore learned of this plan from Albert Anderson long ago," Snape explained. "When Dumbledore confronted me about it, I had no choice but to play along to gain his trust. I took the opportunity to kill him when he was at his most vulnerable, having just subdued the others. Indeed, the plan worked."
Through this brief exchange, the Death Eaters understood what had transpired. A large group of them, empowered by the Felix Felicis, had attempted to assassinate Dumbledore, only to be defeated by the old wizard.
It was only due to Snape's treacherous backstabbing that Dumbledore had finally fallen. Even they had to admit Snape's foresight in not joining Bellatrix's group, or they might have all perished as well.
"Aside from a few unlucky individuals, most of the Death Eaters who participated in the ambush on Dumbledore were still alive. However, as they prepared to retreat from Hogwarts, Albert Anderson cut off their escape route.
Just as Avery described, they had the numerical advantage but were still easily defeated. Only these four managed to escape the Anti-Apparition wards and barely survived."
"There is always someone who thinks they can outsmart me?"
A cruel smile curved Voldemort's lips as he listened to the trio's account.
Snape's heart lurched, and he had a bad feeling about this. He knew that Albert's clumsy lie was highly unreliable.
However, just as he thought that the Dark Lord had seen through the entire thing, a cold voice rang out.
"Avery, what made you dare to betray me?"
Snape's mouth hung slightly agape, and for a moment, he couldn't quite grasp what was happening.
"Master, how could I dare betray you!" Avery crawled towards Voldemort, attempting to kiss his robes. "I have always been loyal to you."
"Do you really think you can hide the truth from me?" Voldemort raised his wand, pointing it at the man cowering on the ground. "Now, let me see what that Mudblood did to make you willingly betray me. Legilimens!"
Voldemort showed no mercy to traitors, immediately using Legilimency to interrogate Avery.
This scene caused the surrounding Death Eaters to breathe a sigh of relief. With Avery as the fall guy, at least the rest of them wouldn't suffer for it.
"I see. The Imperius Curse," Voldemort said, soon understanding the situation. Although he hadn't seen who had cast it on Avery, only a handful of people could pull it off.
Albus Dumbledore or Albert Anderson.
Given Voldemort's understanding of Dumbledore, that hypocrite probably wouldn't stoop to such methods.
That left Albert Anderson.
No wonder that brat had known their plans—that blasted prophecy. There had been a traitor among them from the start.
"You are worthless. Your existence is pointless!"
Voldemort looked at Avery with disgust and raised his wand, casting the Killing Curse without hesitation.
"That damn Mudblood will pay for this."
Snape's eyes twitched as he watched this unfold, and he suddenly understood the whole situation.
Perhaps Albert had anticipated this from the beginning, and so his old friend, Avery, was sacrificed mercilessly to gain the Dark Lord's trust for himself and Alecto, and to sweep this incident under the rug.
Even the Dark Lord wouldn't suspect that Alecto, too, had been controlled by Albert with the Imperius Curse.
The Death Eaters also pieced together what had transpired. No one sympathized with Avery, who now lay dead from the Avada Kedavra Curse, and they even felt like spitting on his corpse.
If he hadn't been such a waste, perhaps they wouldn't have failed so many times.
Damn that prophecy.
That hypocritical Mudblood must die.
"Yaxley."
"Yes, Master. What are your orders?" Yaxley responded immediately.
"I need you to find out about the capture and ascertain the date of Dumbledore's funeral as soon as possible. I shall release all the prisoners from Azkaban on that day," Voldemort said, his gaze sweeping over those present before landing on his trusted lieutenant.
"We must eliminate Scrimgeour and gain control of the British Ministry of Magic as soon as possible." Danger flashed in Voldemort's crimson eyes. "As for that Mudblood, I refuse to believe he can hide in his rat hole forever."
