Chapter 125: Establishing a New Base
Chapter 125: Establishing a New Base
After the robots had been working for a while, Liam was surprised to find that the Torchwood Stakes, which served as the power source, were rapidly losing their vitality. He also sensed that the Life of the Torchwood Stakes was gradually decreasing.
Could this be due to the Fev Virus pollution and radiation in the air? With this thought, Liam immediately halted the robots' work and sent a note to the Plants vs. Zombies World, requesting some Sealed Containers.
Once the Sealed Containers arrived, Liam instructed the robots to collect samples of water, air, and soil, along with the withering plants, and send them back to the Plants vs. Zombies World. He then took out a large number of high-pressure steam storage tanks to serve as a temporary power source, allowing the robots to clean the site and construct a shelter.
By the time he finished these tasks, Knight and his wife had gathered their supplies and were preparing to visit Concord.
Liam thought for a moment and decided to join them. He needed to gather more resources, and a trip to the city was essential.
At the Red Rocket Repair Station, they encountered a group of Mutated Moles. After casting the Ironclad Charm on the three of them, Liam joined in the effort to clear out the Mutated Moles, brandishing his wand.
During the battle, Liam tested the various spells he knew. He found that the Disarming Charm had no effect on the moles, but the Stunning Spell successfully knocked them out. Surprisingly, the Ancient Viking Life Spell was unexpectedly effective, dealing significant damage to the Mutated Moles.
After the battle, while gathering the loot, Liam realized that most of the creatures in this world had mutated due to the virus and radiation. The Purge of the Unclean spell, which targeted these unnatural beings, was highly effective. Additionally, this world was primarily a technological one, and the mutations were entirely due to technological causes, making the creatures extremely vulnerable to magic.
Liam then sent all the still-functional computers and equipment from the repair station back to the Plants vs. Zombies World through the portal. A note soon arrived, informing Liam that Dave had discovered some useful information from the plants and samples and was now back in the laboratory conducting further research. Dave also requested that Liam send more biological samples if possible, as the warehouse had been converted into a highly secure sealed space to prevent contamination.
It seemed that using the Purge of the Unclean spell against Deathclaws might not be a good idea, as it would reduce them to ashes, making them impossible to study.
After finishing the loot collection, the three of them had a disagreement. Knight believed that the world had become much worse, and for safety, he hoped Nora could temporarily return to Sanctuary Hills or the shelter. However, Nora disagreed, arguing that since the world had already deteriorated, she needed to adapt to it.
Liam, seeing the argument, quickly intervened. It was already late, and he did not want to face Deathclaws in the dark.
After Liam repeatedly assured them that he could provide magical protection, Knight finally agreed to move together. They formed a formation with Knight, who had combat experience, leading the way, Liam, who could use magic, bringing up the rear, and Nora protected in the middle.
They easily dispatched two giant mutated mosquitoes on the way and arrived in Concord. As they approached the town, they heard gunfire.
Knight's face changed upon hearing the gunfire, and he signaled for everyone to take cover. They then slowly moved toward the source of the gunfire.
After a short while, they spotted a Raider shooting at the museum, with another Raider standing nearby, keeping watch.
Knight gestured for him to go and handle the situation, so Liam cast the Disillusionment Charm and Armor Charm on himself. Then, he saw a blurry, translucent shadow moving toward the two Raiders.
Soon, a bloodstain appeared on one Raider’s neck, the movement breaking the invisibility effect. The other Raider, sensing something was wrong, tried to turn his gun, but Liam used the Disarming Charm to knock his weapon away. Knight then punched the Raider unconscious.
Knight brought the captive back to where Liam was hiding, tied him up, and woke him up for interrogation.
As expected, the Raiders were composed of scum with no sense of honor. Knight hadn’t even started the interrogation when the Raider, realizing the situation was dire, spilled all the information he knew.
Seeing Knight efficiently dispose of the captive, Liam felt a chill run down his spine and his scalp tingle. After all, despite the many battles he had been in, he had never fought against humans before, so the sight of a dead person was still unsettling. Nora’s reaction was even more intense; she began to retch after witnessing the scene.
It took several minutes for the two of them to regain their composure. They then declined Knight’s offer to wait there and decided to join him in rescuing the people trapped in the Museum.
Liam picked up a Raider’s short-barreled double-barrel shotgun. He wasn’t very skilled with firearms, so a shotgun was a good choice for a beginner.
After eliminating a few scattered Raiders at the Museum’s entrance, an injured civilian begged them to enter the Museum and save the people inside.
Liam used White Fresh Essence to heal the injured Militia, and the armed civilian, still somewhat dazed, joined their team.
With Liam using Life Magic to detect enemies, the team easily cleared out the Museum. On the top floor, they met the last Minuteman, Preston.
Among those hiding was a middle-aged woman named Mother Murphy. Upon seeing Liam, she muttered, “Who are you? Why have I never seen you in the past or the future?”
The others nearby told Liam, “Ignore her; she’s always been like this.”
But Liam felt that Mother Murphy might be a true Seer, at least what she said was accurate.
Following Preston’s lead, Knight went upstairs to check the Power Armor, while Liam went to the lower level to retrieve the Fusion Core.
Fortunately, the Raiders inside the building had already been eliminated. Liam used a Grapple Hook to jump from the upper floor to the basement through a skylight. After using Alohomora to open the door and retrieve the Fusion Core, he used the Grapple Hook again to quickly pull himself back up. He then met Knight at the rooftop entrance.
Liam handed the Fusion Core to Knight, and they both headed to the rooftop.
As soon as they reached the rooftop, bullets started flying around them, kicking up dust. Liam quickly cast the Armor Charm on both of them and began to return fire with his shotgun, giving Knight time to put on the Power Armor.
After taking out the Raider on the opposite rooftop, Liam found himself surprisingly calm, without the expected stress reactions. Perhaps it was because he had experienced so much that he had developed a sort of immunity to such events.
They exchanged fire for a few minutes, and Liam successfully prevented the Raiders from getting too close to the Museum. However, the Raiders were getting closer, and their shots were becoming more accurate. If not for the Armor Charm, he would have been injured by now.
Even so, Liam had to recast the Armor Charm on himself several times. Just as he felt he might not be able to hold them off any longer, he heard the sound of an electric motor behind him; the Power Armor had activated.
