Chapter 1248: Is Mochi Just Rice Cake?
Chapter 1248: Is Mochi Just Rice Cake?
"Lion·Thousand Cutting Valleys!"
Autumn Water slashed downward, Golden Lightning Blade expanded, transforming into countless black-gold slashes that rained chaotically toward Katakuri.
Katakuri seemed prepared. He transformed his body into mochi, splitting himself apart so the slashes passed harmlessly through his form. His body swayed like a willow branch caught in the storm of attacks.
Like a Bullet Hell, not a single slash grazed him, all flying past to vanish into the sky.
"Oh?" Kuro's eyes widened slightly. "Predicted everything?"
Katakuri possessed formidable Observation Haki, capable of foreseeing the near future. He could "see" incoming attacks.
After evading the slashes, he reformed into a humanoid shape, gripped his Trident, and charged straight at Kuro.
Kuro narrowed his eyes, ready to counter, but suddenly Katakuri leapt high, kicking out. His leg split into countless limbs from the thigh down, blossoming like missiles firing in unison. Covered in Haki, they rained down on Kuro.
"Willow Cake!"
"This wide-range attack? I can do that too!" Katakuri roared.
He'd intended to stab, but his foresight showed close combat against this opponent was pointless. He had to use techniques like this.
Kuro watched the legs descend, then casually swung his blade forward. "By the way, mochi... isn't that just a rice cake?"
A massive slash erupted from his blade, slamming into Katakuri's scattered limbs. The strike sent him flying skyward. Katakuri twisted midair, landing heavily before raising his arm. His limb transformed into a familiar weapon—Kuro recognized it instantly.
A gatling gun barrel.
"Unparalleled Mochi Bullet Barrage!"
Rat-a-tat-tat!
Haki-infused mochi bullets erupted from the barrel, peppering Kuro in a concentrated barrage.
"Don't want to fight me up close? Know you can't win in melee?"
Kuro swung his blade again, creating a tortoise-shell-shaped barrier before him. The bullets clattered against it, producing crisp ringing sounds.
Katakuri didn't waste words. Seeing no effect, he flicked his arm. The gatling gun reformed into a normal limb. He pulled his arm back, his fist suddenly glowing red-hot before launching forward.
"Roasted Mochi!"
Boom!
The fist ejected like a rocket, internally heated until glowing crimson.
Kuro's eyes narrowed. He tightened his grip on his blade.
Crack!
The fiery fist shattered Kuro's tortoise-shell barrier, hurtling toward him. But a black blade materialized midair, its tip meeting the flaming fist. After a brief stalemate, the Black Blade pierced the mochi fist's Haki, slicing it cleanly in half. The pieces fell to the ground, eventually absorbed by the awakened earth.
Compared to Luffy's "Ape King Spear", this technique surpassed it in power.
After launching the fist, Katakuri's severed wrist sprouted a new palm. This regeneration ability made him far more convenient than Luffy, though perhaps lacking in raw tenacity. But his pseudo-Logia-like strength was something others couldn't copy. Plus, by launching his fist, he avoided the risk of having it cut off.
They were two sides of the same coin. Luffy had elasticity and tenacity, excelling in Armament Haki. Katakuri had viscosity and plasticity, mastering Observation Haki.
"By the way", Kuro asked, "does mochi count as a sweet?"
"You know", he continued, "almost all Devil Fruit users in your Totto Land have something to do with sweets, right?"
Katakuri's eyes narrowed. He slammed both hands to the ground. "Of course! It's sweet!"
Boom!
The earth before him surged, forming a white river of mochi aggregating into a massive wave rushing toward Kuro.
"Flowing Mochi!"
This was the strength of Awakening—manipulating the environment to match one's own nature.
Doflamingo had threads. Katakuri had mochi.
He knew close combat against Kuro was futile, even with predictive Haki. No need to force it. He'd use whatever methods gave him advantage!
Not only did the massive wave surge forward, but the ground beneath Kuro's feet transformed into sticky mochi, trapping his legs.
"Hmm."
Kuro looked down at his trapped feet, then at the approaching white wave. He slashed forward with tremendous force.
Slash!
His blade carved a massive gap in the wave, but the gap quickly sealed.
Unfazed, Kuro kept hacking. Slash after slash, Haki-infused cuts formed a dense network across the wave. Yet no matter how deep the cuts, the mochi healed, drawing closer.
"Be trapped and drowned! Golden Lion!" Katakuri shouted.
"Thinking what exactly?"
Kuro's voice suddenly echoed from above.
Looking up, Katakuri saw Kuro flying high, watching the mochi wave surge below.
Kuro sighed. "As expected, ability is ability. Can't apply logic here. Hard to break."
Abilities were miracles. This "mochi" concept had viscosity and plasticity. Even Haki-infused slashes couldn't destroy it.
Though he'd known this, he still wanted to test it.
Turns out—
Flying was easier.
Not only did his opponent have abilities. He had them too. Flying let him dodge effortlessly.
"Drizzle Mochi!"
Katakuri roared again. The mochi wave split into thick, sharp mochi spears, tips glowing with Haki. Snake-like, they launched toward the airborne Kuro.
"Can do this too, huh?"
Kuro dodged sideways, evading the mochi spears. But as he stabilized, he froze—several mochi spears already awaited him at his new position.
Observation Haki's foresight?
Katakuri's eyes hardened. "Die!"
Boom!!
The Haki-charged mochi spears slammed into Kuro. Massive mochi engulfed his form, obscuring him from view.
But Katakuri didn't check the results. His arm trembled, sending more mochi spears into the cluster.
His foresight showed—this guy was completely unharmed!
