Chapter 1245: I Just Want to Protect Family/Clan
Chapter 1245: I Just Want to Protect Family/Clan
While Kuro had his own thoughts on the matter, it ultimately depended on whether others were willing.
There were tens of thousands of prisoners. Ideally, Yamato would take them all to sea, letting the Seven Warlords of the Sea and New World pirates tear each other apart without wasting a single resource.
But they weren’t exactly willing.
As Klah put it, when he went to negotiate, Yamato simply lashed out in fury, declaring that since Kuro had killed Ace, he would never surrender.
Kuro merely waved his hand dismissively. “Fine. Put them all to hard labor!”
If they couldn’t be used for combat power, couldn’t they still work in weapon production? Wano Country needed countless facilities rebuilt—minefields required mining, destroyed infrastructure needed repairs, and weapons had to be manufactured.
If they refused to cooperate, then forced labor was the answer.
As for the last of the Seven Warlords of the Sea…
Kuro pondered briefly before summoning Klah. “What’s Katakuri been up to lately?”
“Katakuri?” Klah hesitated, then quickly replied, “Lord Kuro, he’s still in Totto Land. After Big Mom’s death, he’s been reducing his influence to guard against counterattacks from other pirates and the Navy.”
“Send him an invitation in my name. Tell him to come to Wano Country.”
“Lord Kuro, you mean to…”
Kuro smirked. “The kid’s got his own ideas. When I visited Totto Land, I sensed his hidden ambitions. He’s not one for revenge. If he truly has his own plans, he’ll come. Just send the invitation.”
“Understood. I’ll arrange support immediately.” Klah nodded and strode out.
The Beasts Pirates’ old Transponder Snail had a direct line to the Big Mom Pirates. All they needed to do was make the call.
Meanwhile, in Totto Land…
“Katakuri!”
In the main hall of Totto Land’s capital, Cake Island, Perospero anxiously shouted at the man seated on the throne. “Rebellions are breaking out everywhere! Why are we retreating? We should launch a counterattack! Otherwise, they’ll never learn to fear us!”
The man on the throne was none other than Katakuri.
Since their mother’s death, Perospero had returned, but after a vote among the crew, Katakuri—still widely trusted—became the new captain of the Big Mom Pirates. Though Perospero resented this, he respected the family’s decision.
Yet with their mother gone, their dominance had crumbled. The factions outside Totto Land who once obeyed them had openly rebelled upon hearing of Big Mom’s death.
What Perospero couldn’t understand was why Katakuri insisted on retreating. Shouldn’t they strike first to crush the rebellion and remind everyone that the Big Mom Pirates still ruled, even without their mother?
But Katakuri refused. He kept insisting on consolidation, letting the rebels run wild beyond Totto Land’s borders without intervention.
Perospero couldn’t accept this.
“Big Brother Perospero, I have my own reasons,” Katakuri said gravely. “We’re in no position to act recklessly. Too many eyes are on us—pirates, the Navy, and those rebels. We can’t eliminate them all without suffering heavy losses.”
“Exactly because of that, we must strike first! Make them fear us!” Perospero roared.
Katakuri shook his head. “No. That would cost us lives. I won’t risk our family’s safety.”
“You—” A throbbing vein pulsed on Perospero’s forehead. “I refuse to accept this!”
“I’m the captain now, Big Brother,” Katakuri said firmly. “I don’t want our siblings to die. We’ve just escaped our mother’s rule, freed from the terror of having our souls stolen. Can’t we live in peace now?”
“We’re pirates, Katakuri! Pirates!” Perospero shouted. “Your dream is impossible!”
"Brother Katakuri! Big Brother Perospero!"
Just as they argued, Klauss burst in, clutching a Transponder Snail. “It’s a call from Wano Country!”
Wano Country?!
Kaido? No, Kaido was long dead.
Then this must be…
“Hello, Katakuri.”
The Transponder Snail’s screen displayed a calm, bespectacled man. He raised a simulated hand to adjust his glasses. “This is Klah, Navy Vice Admiral. Klah speaking.”
The Navy?!
Katakuri stiffened. What did the Navy want with him?
“The Navy?!” Perospero’s eyes narrowed. He stormed forward to hang up. “What do you want with us? We’ve nothing to say to you! You killed our mother!”
He’d been there himself. If not for his miraculous survival after falling from the sky, he’d have died alongside Big Mom.
Now they dared call to gloat?
“Wait.” Katakuri stood, stopping Perospero. “Let’s hear what they have to say.”
“Katakuri!” Perospero glared furiously. “That’s the Navy! They killed our mother!”
Katakuri ignored him, fixing his gaze on the Transponder Snail. “What does Golden Lion want with us?”
Wano Country was now Golden Lion’s territory. Black Wolf Klah was his subordinate. This call could only be on Golden Lion’s orders.
“Lord Kuro invites you to Wano Country,” the Snail said. “To discuss your position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.”
The Seven Warlords of the Sea.
Katakuri’s eyes flickered with a sudden light.
“Impossible!” Perospero barked. “They dare dream this up? They killed our mother and now expect us to serve them? Never!”
The Transponder Snail chuckled. “This is merely an invitation. You’re free to refuse. I’ll inform Lord Kuro accordingly.”
“No!” Katakuri’s voice cut through. “I’ll go. Tell Golden Lion I’ll come to Wano Country.”
“Is that so? We’ll await you there.”
Click. The call ended.
“Katakuri, what are you doing? Why accept their demand? They killed our mother!” Perospero raged.
He couldn’t comprehend it.
Their mother had died by Golden Lion’s hand. Now her son would become a lapdog for the World Government?
“I…” Katakuri lowered his head, his voice steady but heavy. “I just want to protect Family/Clan. That’s all, Big Brother Perospero. We can’t afford more losses. If aligning with the Navy ensures our survival, the cost is acceptable. The Seven Warlords’ terms are clear. For us now, it’s the only way.”
The Seven Warlords’ conditions were well-known. The guaranteed income from a navigational route would stabilize their survival. Not every family member was suited for battle. This path would let them live safely. With the Seven Warlords’ status, their lives would become far easier.
