Chapter 124: Two Cakes
Chapter 124: Two Cakes
At the end of July, the small village of Hogsmeade received a special visitor.
Hagrid, recently discharged from St. Mungo's, had regained his memories of the past events with Newt's help. He also learned about the term-end incident in the Forbidden Forest from the other professors.
Hagrid couldn't believe that Kyle had faced life-threatening dangers twice in one month, and both incidents were connected to him.
"It's... all my fault..." Hagrid sobbed, his hands covering his face in Kyle's living room. "It was because of me that you almost died in the Forbidden Forest, and it was my fault you encountered a werewolf at St. Mungo's. I should be expelled from Hogwarts and live as a Muggle for the rest of my life!"
Hagrid's entire body trembled with sadness and regret. Despite his towering height, he cried like a child who had just had his lollipop snatched away, his large tears dripping into his beard.
"Hagrid, calm down," Kyle said, handing him a tablecloth to wipe his face. "Remember, you were also a victim in the Olen incident, and I've compared the note. The handwriting wasn't yours, right?"
Kyle glanced sympathetically at his sofa, which was already straining under Hagrid's weight. With Hagrid's shaking, the sofa creaked alarmingly, as if threatening to give up at any moment.
"But you almost died!" Hagrid sniffled. "It was because I told Olen about the Roadways that he had the chance to trick you."
"He would've found a way regardless," Kyle said. "Don't forget he's my Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. He always finds a reason to take me into the Forbidden Forest."
"But you would've been more cautious if he used another excuse!" Hagrid's shoulders continued to shake. "And it was because of me that you encountered the werewolf at St. Mungo's too."
"That was an accident," Kyle shook his head. "And thankfully, I was the one who stumbled upon it. Otherwise, who knows how many innocent patients would've lost their lives or become werewolves that day... We averted a major crisis, Hagrid.
Besides, I should be thanking you. Because of the werewolf incident, I'll probably receive the Order of Merlin soon. Headmistress Sasiah promised to nominate me."
"The Order of Merlin... the Running Gorgon!" Hagrid finally lifted his head, his eyes wide with shock as he looked at Kyle. "You'll be one of the youngest recipients ever, I reckon."
"Who knows," Kyle shrugged. "Have some candy; it might cheer you up a bit."
"Thanks, Kyle," Hagrid said, taking the toffee and wiping his nose with the back of his hand. "That reminds me, I also brought you a gift."
Kyle looked a bit apprehensive. "It's not a new flavor of stoat sandwich, is it?"
Hagrid finally managed a weak laugh. "If you want one, I can make it for you next time, but not today."
He took out a large box from behind his back. "I just found out it's your birthday tomorrow. Happy birthday in advance, Kyle. This cake is made by me."
Kyle opened the box to find a large chocolate cake covered in sugar frosting. In green icing, the words read: "Wish Harry Birthday, Happy?"
Hagrid had made a mistake in his writing, but the intention was clear.
However, that wasn't the main issue.
Kyle narrowed his eyes, his face filled with confusion. "This is... for me?"
When did he change his name? Do Chris and Diana know about this?
"Of course, if you don... Oh sorry, I got the wrong one."
Hagrid looked at the words on the cake and slapped his forehead with enough force to knock over a cow. He then reached into another inner pocket of his coat and pulled out another box.
"You and Little Harry share the same birthday. I mixed up the two cakes."
"Thanks, Hagrid. I love it," Kyle said, taking a small slice of cake and popping it into his mouth. And then... nothing happened.
A rush of sweetness exploded on his palate, like he had just taken a gulp of concentrated syrup.
As he had expected, he shouldn't have eaten anything Hagrid offered!
Gritting his teeth, Kyle forced himself to swallow the tiny bite.
"How is it?" Hagrid asked.
"Amazing!" Kyle exclaimed, giving him a thumbs-up. "I've never tasted such a sweet cake before."
"I'm glad you like it," Hagrid said happily. "Don't you want to eat some more? There's plenty left."
"No, no, not now," Kyle shook his head repeatedly. "I plan to share it with my friends tomorrow.
It would be a shame for Fred and George to miss out on such a delicious cake, and Cedric will be back soon too. I'll save a piece for him."
"Yes, good things are meant to be shared with friends," Hagrid agreed. "If you like it, feel free to come to me anytime after school starts."
"Cough... definitely, definitely," Kyle's throat tightened, and he quickly changed the subject. "By the way, since you've prepared the cake, are you going to deliver it to Potter?"
"Yes, Dumbledore agreed to let me take him to Diagon Alley, but..." Hagrid frowned. "I was supposed to go tomorrow, but for some reason, his admission letter hasn't reached him. So, Dumbledore asked me to go earlier and check on him, just in case something unexpected happened."
Kyle raised an eyebrow. "That does sound odd."
"Yeah, so I'll be heading to Surrey in London this afternoon to deliver the letter personally," Hagrid continued. "As you know, Harry mustn't miss the start of term at Hogwarts."
"Don't worry too much. It might just be an issue with the owls," Kyle said, looking out the window. "Some Muggles don't like birds, so they might have chased away the owl that was supposed to deliver the letter.
How about this, give me the letter, and I'll have Rattler deliver it. Then, you can take him to Diagon Alley directly."
"Won't that be too much trouble?" Hagrid asked, hesitating. He still wanted to hand the letter to Harry himself.
"It's no trouble at all," Kyle waved his hand. "Having an owl deliver the admission letter is a Hogwarts tradition, and it's very memorable. Every young wizard only gets to experience it once, and if they miss it, they'll never get another chance."
Upon hearing Kyle's words, Hagrid paused for a moment, suddenly remembering.
That's right... How could he forget about that?
"Alright," Hagrid hesitated for a moment before handing over a pale yellow envelope. "Then I'll trouble you with this."
"It's no problem," Kyle assured him as he took the envelope.
Hagrid stayed a while longer and then prepared to leave.
Just as he was about to step out, Kyle asked, "By the way, Hagrid, how did you find the taste of that toffee?"
"Oh, I haven't eaten it yet," Hagrid replied with a smile. "I plan to let Harry taste it. He must not have tried any magical candy yet."
"......"
Kyle was speechless.
After Hagrid left, Kyle called for Rattler and handed him the admission letter. He also took the opportunity to discreetly remove the toffee that had been stuck to the side of the wax seal.
"Be careful. That family isn't very friendly, and they might have weapons," Kyle warned.
