Chapter 124: Divergence in Missions (3k)
Chapter 124: Divergence in Missions (3k)
After cultivating for two and a half days, Obito finally mastered the Shadow Clone Jutsu on the afternoon of the third day.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu!" Obito performed the necessary hand seals, channeling his chakra.
Boom!
A puff of white smoke appeared, and a clone of Obito, neither fat nor thin, nor short, stood beside the original.
"I finally succeeded!" Obito exclaimed joyfully.
He could already imagine how much easier his life would become. He could send his clones to school, do his homework, or even work, while he spent time with Rin... no, that was something he would have to do himself.
"That's wonderful," Might Guy said, quietly dispelling his own shadow clone, its skin as rocky as the landscape.
He, too, wished he could send his clone to endure the tedium of school.
"From now on, you can go to school and do my homework," Obito said gleefully to his clone.
However, the shadow clone gave Obito an unexpected response.
"Why should I go to school?" the clone asked.
Obito was taken aback by the clone's question. He thought for a moment before answering, "Because you're my shadow clone."
"I am Uchiha Obito, and so are you. Why can't you go to school and do your own homework?" the clone argued reasonably.
"Because... because..." Obito scratched his head, feeling that the clone's argument made sense.
"How about I eat Teacher Mu Yue's cooking from now on? That way, you can obtain the delicious memories without worrying about gaining weight," the clone suggested.
"I can also help you spend time with Rin, giving you more time to cultivate," it added.
"No, no, absolutely not!" Obito waved his hands and shook his head vigorously.
"Why is this shadow clone only thinking about having fun?" Obito suddenly realized a problem.
"Aren't you also trying to pass off your tedious tasks to me so you can enjoy yourself?" the clone retorted bluntly.
Obito was left speechless and immediately dispelled the shadow clone.
"Teacher Mu Yue, have I not mastered the Shadow Clone Jutsu yet?" Obito asked in confusion. He felt that there was something wrong with his clone.
Mu Yue used her Appraisal ability to examine Obito and confirmed that he had indeed mastered the technique.
"You've learned it. There's no need to practice this ninjutsu further," Mu Yue replied.
"But I feel like I haven't truly mastered it yet. There's something off about that shadow clone," Obito insisted.
"The thoughts of the shadow clone are the same as those of the original," Mu Yue explained gently.
The ninja world was vast, and there were many talented individuals. Obito's argument with his clone was not unusual; there would even be ninjas who got into physical altercations with their clones.
"Hehe, then I'll start cultivating the breathing technique," Obito said, a sheepish smile on his face. He understood what Mu Yue meant.
If the original wanted to be lazy, the clone would also want to be lazy.
Obito's respect for the Second Hokage dropped a notch. While the jutsu was impressive, there were some oversights in its design.
Fulfilling days always passed quickly. Soon, it was the last day before school started again.
"Everyone, take tomorrow off. If you want to have fun, go out and play. If you don't feel like it, you can lie in the yard and contemplate life. After today, there won't be much time to rest," Mu Yue said. "Of course, if you really want to cultivate, you can come here. I'll be cultivating as well."
"Rin, let's go out and play tomorrow!" Obito decided to take Mu Yue's advice and rest the next day.
"Okay," Rin agreed with a nod.
After all, she had already turned him down once before, and it was the last day of the break—a perfect opportunity to relax.
"Then let's go find Kakashi in the morning and invite him to join us," Rin suggested after a moment's thought.
Obito's initial joy diminished slightly. He had wanted to spend time with just the two of them, but since Rin wanted to include Kakashi, Obito turned to Might Guy and asked, "Guy, do you want to come with us?"
"No, I'm going to cultivate the Rock Breathing technique tomorrow," Guy declined.
From his experience learning the shadow clone technique, it was clear that Guy's mind was currently occupied solely with rock breathing.
"What about you, Genma?" Obito asked, turning to his other teammate.
"Just enjoy yourselves. My progress in Fire Breathing is still lacking, so I plan to cultivate for the entire day tomorrow," Genma replied.
Previously, Genma had been ahead in their various training sessions, but when it came to the breathing techniques, he was currently the furthest behind. Though the difference wasn't significant, he wanted to put in extra practice to catch up with Obito's progress.
Obito's happiness diminished further.
It was like having four roommates, and when the weekend came, one of them suggested going out to play, but only two of them went out while the other two chose to stay in the dorm to study. How could one enjoy their leisure time with that hanging over their head?
"It's just one day. Cultivating for one more day won't make much of a difference," Obito tried to reassure himself.
The next day, in the morning.
Rin and Obito met at the designated spot and then made their way to Kakashi's house together.
They were in luck, as Kakashi wasn't on a mission that day. Instead, he was sitting at home, lost in thought.
"Kakashi, would you like to come out and play with us?" Rin asked with a smile.
"That's because you were exceptionally talented, Kakashi." Rin praised.
"Alright, let's go then." Kakashi agreed, having nothing else planned for the day.
Seeing Kakashi agree to join them, Tobirama's initially uplifted mood soured.
"Damn Kakashi, as a ninja, you're always slacking off instead of doing missions!" Tobirama muttered under his breath.
"You little..."
Bang!
Before Rin could finish her sentence, Tobirama, who wasn't paying attention to where he was going, walked straight into a pole.
"Damn Kakashi! Why don't you move this pole somewhere people won't bump into it?!" Tobirama exclaimed, having walked into the same pole before. He thought its placement was problematic.
Kakashi: ...
"If there were such a place, I'd help you find your brain and eyes first." Kakashi retorted.
He felt that Tobirama was just looking for something to complain about, and the placement of the pole was certainly not his decision.
"Now, now, stop arguing. A little rub will make the pain go away." Rin said gently, walking up to Tobirama and gently massaging the spot where he had bumped his head.
"How does that feel? Better?" Rin asked softly as she continued to rub.
"Hehe." Tobirama, feeling the soothing touch of Rin's soft hands, couldn't help but smile in satisfaction. Though he hadn't heard her question clearly, he nodded anyway.
"Then let's continue on our way." Rin said with a smile.
"Kakashi, have you eaten breakfast yet?" Rin suddenly asked, remembering something.
Since she had come with Tobirama, she knew that neither of them had eaten yet.
"Not yet." Kakashi shook his head.
"Good, I heard there's a new dumpling shop in town that serves delicious three-colored dumplings." Rin explained.
With Rin leading the way, the three of them went to the new dumpling shop that had just opened on the street.
Each of them bought a serving, which came with three dumplings on a small plate.
"These look great." Rin commented, looking at the plump, colorful dumplings on her plate.
"Not as good as Teacher Mu Yue's tempura." Tobirama remarked after taking a bite.
"Only you would compare two completely different types of food." Kakashi said after eating one of the dumplings.
"Hmm, the red ones are red bean-flavored, they're pretty good. But I think strawberry would be even better." Rin ignored Tobirama's comment and took a bite.
While Teacher Mu Yue's cooking was delicious, desserts and main courses were two different things.
"Kakashi, can you briefly describe what the life of a full-fledged ninja is like? Tobirama and I will be graduating in two semesters as well." Rin asked curiously.
"Training, missions." Kakashi replied succinctly.
"That's too simple! You might as well not have said anything." Tobirama couldn't help but interrupt.
"Is there anything in particular that we should pay attention to?" Rin asked, unfazed by Tobirama's comment.
"Ninja, missions come first. Always prioritize completing the mission." Kakashi thought for a moment before answering.
"You sound like a mature adult all of a sudden." Rin teased.
"No, it's about putting your companions first. If a mission fails, there's still a chance to make up for it, but if a companion dies, there's no bringing them back." Tobirama disagreed with Kakashi's philosophy.
"That's because you're still a student, and I'm already a Chunin." Kakashi replied bluntly.
"You're too naive. Some missions, if failed, can bring great disaster to the village, and that's not something that can be compared to the life of one person."
"I'll definitely become a better ninja than you and prove it to you!" Tobirama was frustrated but had no choice but to accept this for now.
Indeed, he didn't have the credentials to argue with Kakashi, as he wasn't even a ninja yet.
"Alright, alright, you two will definitely become excellent ninjas. Why don't we go for a walk on the commercial street?" Rin suggested, changing the subject.
From then on, the three of them basically followed Rin's lead as she took them around the village. At noon, they even had a picnic in the forest, where Tobirama suggested catching fish in the river and roasting them.
"Just don't drown. This river looks deeper than it is." Kakashi warned.
"Don't underestimate me, I have chakra." Tobirama, holding a stick with kunai tied to it, stepped onto the water's surface.
"You can already walk on water?" Kakashi was a little surprised.
Although Tobirama was still far from his level, he was no longer the dead-last Tobirama that Kakashi remembered.
Having mastered fire-style jutsu and displaying proficiency in ninjutsu, he now also demonstrated the ability to walk on water.
Kakashi, who had been living on his own for quite some time, skillfully grilled the fish they had caught. His many years of independence had honed his survival skills.
Tobirama watched as Rin praised Kakashi's grilled fish and secretly vowed to learn how to cook from Teacher Mu Yue in his free time.
The only exception was Kakashi; he refused to be outdone by him in any way.
