Chapter 123: Summer Vacation and the Opening of a New World
Chapter 123: Summer Vacation and the Opening of a New World (Kneeling for Favorites and Recommendations)
When Liam returned home from school, he was surprised to find a brand-new, expensive-looking sports car parked in the driveway. It wasn't until dinner that he learned from his father, Mr. Lambert, that his new novel had sold extremely well, earning him a substantial sum. On the day he received the payment, he immediately bought the sports car he had been coveting for years.
Of course, this extravagant spending led to several days of Liam coming home to nothing but vegetable salads and dry bread. But seeing his father's elated expression, Liam doubted that he had truly learned the lesson his mother thought he should have.
On the first night back home, Liam spent a lot of time recounting his year at Hogwarts to his parents. It wasn't until he was in bed that night that he remembered he had forgotten to tell them about the exchange program for the next year.
The next morning, Liam informed his parents about his upcoming exchange to Brazil. Without a word, they signed their names on the form. Mr. Lambert proudly told Liam that he had used his gap year to travel across Europe, where he met Liam's mother, Sally. He believed that it was a great thing for Liam to travel and broaden his horizons during his studies, especially since Liam had earned the exchange position through academic excellence, which made both him and Sally very proud.
The older generation had their own kind of romance, Liam thought as he put away the form. He then returned to his room to plan his summer vacation.
In theory, most students would start their summer by making a detailed schedule. Each day would be neatly outlined with tasks to ensure a well-organized and productive summer. If one followed the schedule, they would undoubtedly have a very fulfilling summer vacation.
Unfortunately, most people couldn't stick to their plans for more than a week. This was why Liam often studied with Hermione during the summer: at least with a familiar face around, he would try his best to complete the tasks on his schedule for various reasons.
While they were working on their assignments in the library, Hermione told Liam that her parents had agreed to her going to Brazil as an exchange student. She suggested that Liam also use his summer to preview the third-year textbooks to avoid falling behind due to the exchange. This meant that Liam and Hermione spent a lot of time catching up on their homework in the library to make time for their studies.
However, this routine didn't last long. Hermione and her parents soon left for a vacation in France, leaving Liam to write his assignments and study magic alone.
On the Saturday of the first week of summer vacation, the phone rang suddenly. Liam picked it up and heard a loud voice shouting, "Hello? Hello? Can you hear me? I'm looking for Liam, Layne Liang."
Liam was startled by the volume and quickly moved the phone away from his ear. "Ron, it's me, Liam. It's very rude to shout on the phone. Just speak normally."
"Really? No wonder Harry's family hung up on me", Ron sounded a bit dejected.
"Of course, they don't like magic at all. If you tell them you're Harry Potter's friend, they'll hang up no matter how politely you speak."
After a few more minutes of conversation, Liam ended the call with Ron. As soon as he put down the phone, he received a message from Dave, informing him that the severely injured woman he had brought in, who had been in a frozen state, had finally woken up.
This sounds like good news, after all, the lady had been in a coma for several months. Liam had thought she would never wake up.
Liam used the excuse of going for a walk and left the house, then opened the portal to the Plants vs. Zombies World in a small grove in the park.
After passing through the portal, he quickly arrived at the Hospital Wing. He was eager to see what the world the lady came from looked like. Only by knowing this could Liam decide whether to venture into that world and how to prepare.
Entering the ward, Liam was surprised to find the lady wearing a striped hospital gown, leaning against the bed as if she were already asleep. Dave was sitting beside her, constantly writing something in a notebook in his hand.
Seeing Liam enter the ward, Dave greeted him happily in a soft voice, and then said without any reserve, "The world this lady comes from is extremely valuable to us. If you go on an adventure there, you can help Dave bring back some things."
"An extremely valuable world? Why is that?" Liam's curiosity was piqued, and he asked with interest.
"A world that has just experienced a full-scale war will definitely lack order. You might be able to find a lot of useful things. I want to ask you to find some industrial machines and bring them back, because the apocalypse here happened so long ago that most of the machines have deteriorated due to lack of maintenance."
"Sounds good. If I find anything useful, I'll bring it back. You need to have some people waiting in the Warehouse, and I'll throw the items through the Dimensional Gateway when I find them."
Although Liam and Dave's conversation was quiet, it still woke the lady on the bed. Upon seeing her awake, Dave introduced Liam as a Planar Travel Merchant.
After listening to Dave's introduction, the lady's face showed a look of anxiety. "Can you please send me back as soon as possible? I have some urgent matters to attend to in my world."
"Madam, please rest assured", Liam quickly reassured her when he saw her becoming agitated. "The doctor will come to check on you shortly. If everything is normal, I can send you back to your world. If you're not in good health, you won't be able to do much even if you return."
Hearing Liam's words, the lady finally calmed down. She quickly recovered from her momentary distress and extended her hand, saying, "Pleased to meet you, I'm Nora."
"You can call me Liam", Liam said as he shook her hand. "If your check-up is fine, you'll be able to go home soon."
At that moment, the doctor entered the room, and Liam and Dave stepped back to the door of the ward. On a bench near the door, Dave handed Liam a thick notebook and told him, "This notebook lists all the equipment we need. The items I've marked in red are the top priorities. As one of the leaders of Greenville, I can't do all the work myself."
"Leader? When did I become a leader?" Liam asked curiously.
"I thought you knew when you received the gilded identity plate. Everyone in the base considers you and Dave to be great saviors, the dawn of humanity. I think they're right. Without the Plants, humanity might not have survived. And without the technology you brought, humanity would only be barely surviving, not reclaiming our home as we have today."
Liam felt a bit embarrassed hearing these praises and understood why he hadn't been asked to pay for the things he had requested before.
Having a world of his own as a backup was a good thing, but it also came with a heavy responsibility. Liam suddenly felt that this adventure was becoming very important.
