Chapter 121: Gray is a Smart Guy!
Chapter 121: Gray is a Smart Guy!
Rod read through the documents and felt that everything was in order. He then asked Gray if the Council's emblem was genuine.
Gray confirmed that there was no issue.
But, bro, have you even taken a good look at that emblem?
Oh, right, it's because he didn't want to look, which actually proved that it was real and reasonable.
"So, what are the changes to the mission?"
Kapting explained, "It's simple. First, we need to add a higher-level confidentiality agreement. You must not disclose any details of this mission to anyone. Here are the detailed confidentiality terms."
Rod and Gray carefully read through the terms and nodded.
This wasn't a problem. Many clients required confidentiality, and it was understandable for the Council to demand a higher level of secrecy.
Kapting continued, "Second, your task is limited to assisting us in locating Zato and his brother, the Naked Bandage Men. You must not initiate contact with them or perform any actions such as arrests or interrogations on your own."
Rod asked, "So, we just need to find them and report their location to you, and then we're done, right?"
Kapting replied, "Exactly. Everything else will be handled by us. Of course, we will still conduct our own search, and your compensation will remain the same."
Is this for real? This Kapting guy is a stand-up guy.
There's no way that's possible.
Rod suspected there was more to this, but since the client was only reducing the workload and not the pay, he had no reason to refuse.
He glanced at Gray, who nodded in agreement.
"We accept," Rod said.
"Great, then I'll leave it to you," Kapting said. "Please start as soon as possible."
This is urgent?
"Alright," Rod held his pendant and solemnly chanted, "I am the one who bridges the realms…"
He deliberately recited the full incantation with meticulous care.
Magic light shone on the ground, and a river crab and a small shadow wolf appeared.
While they weren't the strongest monsters, it was important to give the impression that he was putting in his best effort, or rather, giving the feeling of it.
This was like a game where, when your teammates are in a fight, no matter how far away you are, you always tell them, 'I'm on my way, I'm on my way!'
Even if you lose, it gives your teammates some emotional value—'If you had just held on a few more seconds…'
"This is… Celestial Magic? And summoning two Celestial Spirits at once?"
Kapting felt his eyes were opened today. Fairy Tail, while troublemakers, truly had some talented individuals.
Unfortunately, he couldn't identify which constellations these two spirits belonged to. Was the crab from Cancer?
Rod explained, "It's a similar type of magic. They are skilled at searching. If we have an item with Zato's scent, it will greatly improve our efficiency."
"I'm sorry, we have no leads at all," Kapting felt a bit ashamed.
The Council had sent such capable mages, and he couldn't provide any help.
"Don't worry. As long as they are active in the mountains, they will leave different scents behind."
Rod waved his hand, and the river crab and shadow wolf ran off. "The Southern Mountains are vast, so please give us some time."
"Of course, and we will also be searching diligently," Kapting raised his arm. "Let's begin the search, everyone, stay alert!"
"Ooh!!!"
The enforcement team members, not wanting to be outdone by the Fairy Tail mages, were energized and formed small groups to start their search.
Gray, with his hands in his pockets, watched Rod's performance and the Council members walking away. "Hey, you…"
"Shh…" Rod pulled him in the opposite direction before gesturing for him to continue.
"…" Gray wanted to say that he was being a bit cunning, but he was more concerned about another issue. "Why are you misleading them?"
"Eh, eh, eh… What do you mean by misleading? I'm just not using my full power. It's always good to keep some magic for self-defense when you're out and about."
"And did I lie just now? I just used a little bit of a shortcut, that's all."
Gray looked at him, thinking that if he could mislead someone without lying, wasn't that even more terrifying?
Rod waved his hand. "Don't look at me like that. Don't you think it's strange that the mission details suddenly changed?"
Of course, it was strange. The reward stayed the same, but the task became easier.
Gray thought for a moment and said, "Maybe the Council already knows the target of the Naked Bandage Guy. They might think it's a secret we shouldn't know, so they changed the mission details. And... this team probably doesn't have anyone skilled in investigation, yet they're eager to find the Zato brothers. That's why they didn't cancel the mission but still want our help... What's that look for?"
It's a look of gratitude! Rod shook Gray's hand and patted his back hard.
I never expected this. There are actually people in this guild who use their brains.
From now on, I can discuss things with Gray.
Gray pouted. "I always feel like you underestimate me."
"No, no, it's just that I never thought someone who spends their days fighting with Natsu and getting their underwear stolen could be so smart."
Gray's face turned red. "What does that have to do with underwear? You bastard, you fight with Natsu all the time too!"
"I didn't think you could blush."
"Who would say such things so seriously in front of others!"
"Oh, sorry." Rod thought for a moment and then added, "We'll be staying at Wendy's place tonight. Don't get any funny ideas, or the whole village will beat you to a pulp."
"I wouldn't!"
After "admonishing" Gray, Rod summoned the other Shadow Wolves to search the area they had planned earlier.
As for him and Gray, they just needed to find a place without mosquitoes to rest.
There were still some snacks left from their trip to Hargeon, perfect for calling Gray to make a table and play some cards.
Thinking about the others working hard in the mountains, Rod felt a twinge of guilt. "Are you cheating with the cards?"
Gray smirked. "I'm not Cana."
Huh? So Cana is a cheater?
As the sky grew dark, the two of them said their goodbyes to the Council members and returned to Cat House to rest.
Wendy's mood had improved significantly. When Rod and Gray returned, she was sitting by the door, reading a thick magic book under the lamplight.
"Mr. Rod, Mr. Gray, welcome back!" Wendy closed her book and asked, "How did the mission go?"
Rod replied, "It went okay. We'll need to go deeper tomorrow, so we probably won't be able to stay here."
"That's a shame." Wendy felt a bit disappointed; she had hoped for a bit more company.
Rod said, "We have a mission, so it can't be helped. How about we come back for a couple of days after we're done?"
"Sure!"
Sharon stood in the doorway. "How long are you going to chat out here? The food is getting cold."
Gray said casually, "That's perfect, cats don't like hot food."
"You jerk!" Sharon ran back inside and threw out a bunch of wooden sticks and coarse ropes. "If you're eating outside, you might as well sleep outside too. Here's a tent!"
Wendy whispered, "That's a tent Sharon borrowed from Magnolia. She said you might need it later."
Oh~ So she's being tsundere.
Rod nodded and whispered in Wendy's ear, "What if I formally thanked Sharon right now? Wouldn't her expression be hilarious?"
Wendy hesitated. "Don't do that, okay?"
Actually, she was kind of looking forward to it, but she didn't want to tease Sharon too much.
