Chapter 12: The Enhancing Effects of Silk
Chapter 12: The Enhancing Effects of Silk
In the afternoon, Naoki rode off into the hills behind the ranch on his Golurk.
One might wonder why he chose to ride Golurk instead of his Motostoke Moto-Bike...
Well, when Naoki mentioned his plan to head into the hills, Golurk eagerly volunteered to take him there.
The Moto-Bike was left behind at the ranch to keep an eye on things and prevent any mischievous Pokemon like Psyducks, Golducks, and Gremliers from stealing fish.
Riding on Golurk felt vastly different from riding the Moto-Bike.
The Moto-Bike was like a small scooter, but Golurk was much larger and akin to a hefty motorcycle.
Speaking of motorcycles, Naoki thought the futuristic-looking Melmetal would fit that description even better.
Since this world was one where Golurk had escaped from the Energy Plant in the Pastoria Great Marsh, it was likely that this was Pearl's world.
Pippa may have also lost her mother, Dr. Fiona, along the way...
Naoki's thoughts wandered as he rode on Golurk.
Golurk moved swiftly, and in the blink of an eye, they had entered the hilly region.
This time, their goal wasn't to forage for items to sell, but to find a Caterpie to test the effects of his cooking.
The afternoon forest was lush and vibrant, with the distant calls of bird Pokemon filling the air.
Naoki patted Golurk's shoulder to signal him to slow down, and he began to carefully observe their surroundings, searching for any signs of Caterpie among the dense foliage and deep grass.
As everyone knew, Caterpie was notoriously weak compared to other Pokemon.
While Magikarp and Feebas were even weaker, Caterpie didn't seem much stronger.
Before evolving, it could only use Tackle, String Shot, and Bug Bite.
And upon evolving into a Metapod, it could only harden itself and had no other offensive moves.
It was only when it reached its final stage as a Butterfree that Caterpie truly transformed and emerged from its cocoon, completing its metamorphosis.
In the wild, these tiny Caterpies often became prey for other Pokemon.
Spearows were their most famous predators.
Because of this, Caterpies usually hid in dense bushes and grass to avoid being spotted by their enemies.
Just then, a rustling sound came from the nearby grass.
Naoki dismounted from Golurk and quietly approached the source of the noise.
The Pokemon hiding in the grass froze at the sound of approaching footsteps, and the rustling stopped.
Naoki parted the grass and, as expected, found a tense and frightened Caterpie.
"There you are!"
Naoki's eyes lit up as he recognized the Caterpie, but he soon noticed that it seemed injured. Upon closer inspection, he spotted several scratch marks on its body, likely inflicted by a bird Pokemon.
The Caterpie had also noticed him and Golurk, and it looked scared.
Naoki raised an eyebrow. Perhaps it was this Caterpie's lucky day, as he happened to have two Oran Berries with him, perfect for restoring its energy.
He took out the Oran Berries from his bag and held out his hand towards the Caterpie.
However, this Caterpie seemed to be on edge. Seeing the approaching hand, it instinctively opened its mouth and spat out a stream of white silk.
The silk wrapped around Naoki's hand, but its quality was poor, and Naoki easily snapped it with a forceful tug.
"Here," Naoki said, placing the Berries on the grass in front of the Caterpie.
This time, the Caterpie didn't attack. Instead, it lowered its head and began munching on the Oran Berries.
By the time it had finished both Berries, leaving only the pits behind, its wounds had mostly healed.
Naoki looked on and asked, "Do you want to become stronger?"
There was a hint of temptation in his tone.
The Caterpie looked confused.
"You're too weak right now," Naoki continued. "The silk you're so proud of is so feeble against other Pokemon. Aren't you always being attacked by other Pokemon who see you as food and chase you down?"
The Caterpie nodded slowly, its expression blank.
"So, are you content with your life as it is?" Naoki pressed on. "Do you ever dream of a day when you can beat those bullies with your own strength, dominate the entire forest, and make all Pokemon respect you?"
Could it... really be possible?
The Caterpie froze, its eyes wide.
Was it content?
No, it wasn't!
Everyone thought it was the weakest Pokemon, so weak that even a newly-hatched Pidgey could prey on it with ease.
The Caterpie imagined itself towering over a Pidgey, striking fear into the hearts of all bird Pokemon.
A fiery determination ignited within it like never before.
Naoki had successfully lured it in!
Without another word, Naoki took out the sticky rice dumplings he had prepared and placed them in front of the Caterpie. "Eat this, and you will become stronger," he said.
The Caterpie eyed the white dumplings and then began gobbling them up without hesitation.
Once it had devoured the entire dumpling, the Caterpie let out a satisfied belch.
On the surface, it didn't seem like anything had changed.
After a moment's thought, Naoki said to it, "Try using your silk move again."
"Seee!"
The Caterpie opened its mouth, and a stream of sticky, white silk shot out.
Compared to its previous attempt, this time, the amount of silk it produced was noticeably greater.
Even the Caterpie itself was stunned.
Naoki twisted the silk around his hand and pulled hard. The silk stretched but didn't snap, unlike before.
"As I thought, its resilience and viscosity have greatly improved, and the strength is clearly on another level," Naoki thought to himself. Aloud, he said to the Caterpie, "Congratulations, you're stronger now."
Now that he had tested the effects of the dumplings, there was no reason to linger.
Naoki mounted Golurk and turned to leave.
Hearing those words, the Caterpie seemed excited, but it soon calmed down.
This increase in strength wasn't enough. It wanted to become even stronger! It wanted to make everyone respect it! And the human who could help it achieve that...
As it watched the figure of Naoki and his powerful Pokemon companion fade into the distance, the Caterpie's heart stirred with unknown emotions.
