Chapter 12: Spot and Rat Potion
Chapter 12: Spot and Rat Potion
For Kyle, who was used to traveling by plane and high-speed trains, riding the Hogwarts Express, an old-fashioned steam train, was nothing short of torture.
Especially after a few hours, when the novelty and excitement of the Hogwarts buff wore off, its shortcomings became increasingly apparent.
First of all, it was slow, painfully slow. Kyle felt that this thing could barely reach eighty miles per hour, and it was even slower than some better-performing cars.
Moreover, the ride was extremely uncomfortable. Kyle was jostled around so much that he almost doubted his existence, and he barely managed to keep his breakfast down.
Under such circumstances, trying to pass the time by reading was practically impossible.
Fortunately, Cedric, who was in the same compartment, was quite talkative, making the journey not as terrible as it could have been.
After discussing the professors, Kyle asked about other things, and Cedric was forthcoming with his answers. He even proactively shared some interesting places in Hogwarts or amusing portraits.
There were many things that Kyle didn't know about, which piqued his interest. As a gesture of gratitude, Kyle generously offered to provide Cedric with snacks for the entire journey.
Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, Chocolate Frogs, Cauldron Cakes, and more were all readily available.
However, there was one thing that left Kyle speechless—when it came to the Sorting ceremony, Cedric predictably continued the wizarding world's tradition of humor, not speaking the truth.
"You have to catch the Golden Snitch in the Great Hall within ten minutes to be Sorted?"
Kyle politely tugged at the corners of his mouth but didn't respond.
Well, at least Quidditch was more reliable than fire dragons, and it suited Cedric.
"By the way, Kyle, have you thought about which house you might be Sorted into?" Cedric popped a Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Bean into his mouth and said, "It would be great if you got into Hufflepuff, but a smart young wizard like you would probably want to go to Ravenclaw."
Before he could finish his sentence, Cedric's mouth twitched, and his entire face contorted involuntarily, making him look hilarious.
"Oh damn, it's my most hated flavor, liver."
Despite saying this, Cedric forced himself to swallow the bean.
"I've thought about it, but I don't have a particular preference for any specific house," Kyle said, picking up a bean as well. "And I'm not that good at catching, so I might not be able to catch the Golden Snitch within ten minutes. I'd be happy if any house accepts me."
Hmm... It was the new black pepper steak flavor, not bad.
"Don't worry, you'll definitely be able to," Cedric laughed and chuckled. "You'll be fine."
As they were talking, the compartment door suddenly opened from the outside.
Both Kyle and Cedric turned their heads simultaneously.
It was the familiar red-haired boy, but instead of the twins, it was another Weasley.
Percy entered the compartment and said, "Kyle, Fred told me you were here... Oh, you must be Cedric Diggory. I'm Percy Weasley, nice to meet you."
Cedric, who had been curious, suddenly heard his name and quickly nodded in response. "The pleasure is mine, Percy Weasley."
Percy's formal demeanor made Cedric feel as if he were in a formal setting rather than on the Hogwarts Express.
In any case, Cedric was completely bewildered but remained very polite.
Kyle suppressed a laugh and waited until they finished their greetings before asking, "Percy, what can I do for you?"
He was familiar with all seven Weasley children, including Percy, although they didn't interact frequently.
"Sorry to interrupt, but I do have something to discuss," Percy said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a large rat.
Spot had been looking a bit down lately, so I wanted to ask if you still had any of that Rat Potion you fed him before.
If possible, I'd like to buy some."
"Rat Potion?"
Kyle looked at the grayish rat in Percy's hand, missing a front paw, and smiled with narrowed eyes. "Of course, just wait a moment."
Kyle then searched his trunk and took out a bottle filled with red liquid, turning to hand it to Percy.
"As you know, once a week, three drops each time. This amount should last for quite a while."
"Thank you," Percy quickly took the bottle of red Rat Potion and then, with hesitation, took out three silver Galleons, his face turning red. "I know this might not be enough, but this is all I have for now. I'll repay the rest as soon as I can."
"You don't need so much," Kyle took only one Galleon, pushing the other two back. "It's just Rat Potion, not something valuable. Why would it be so expensive? One Galleon is enough."
Percy looked at the Galleon in his hand, his face alternating between red and white. After a long while, he sighed softly, "Thank you, Kyle."
"No need," Kyle said, "I'm taking payment. It's a normal transaction."
"No, I understand."

Percy smiled, but it was a bitter smile. "If it were ordinary Rat Potion, how could it have kept Spot alive for eleven years? This must be Mr. Scamander's creation. After all, only a legendary figure like him could make an ordinary field mouse live so long.
If this potion were on the market, it would probably cost at least ten Galleons."
Hmm...
Kyle rubbed his teeth, wanting to tell Percy the truth.
Spot's longevity had nothing to do with the Rat Potion, and it was indeed his own creation, not worth ten Galleons.
But the matter of Peter Pettigrew was too troublesome. He was only eleven, and he didn't want to attract Dumbledore's attention just yet.
However, he didn't do nothing either.
Besides the Rat Potion, he had also told Percy a long time ago that rats and other pets were different. If they carried too much wizarding scent, they would be rejected by their own kind.
Initially, Percy had his doubts, but after Kyle attributed this information to Mr. Scamander, he believed it, even treating it as a classic.
Percy was indeed very attentive to his pet.
Not only did he make a special nest for Spot in his room, but he also reduced physical contact, except for special situations like this when he had to carry it around. At other times, he basically let it roam freely.
On the other side, seeing that Kyle hadn't responded, Percy didn't plan to stay any longer.
"Anyway, thank you, Kyle. If you have any academic questions in the future, you can come to me. And after graduation, I'll repay you these Galleons."
After saying this, Percy hurriedly left the compartment, leaving only Kyle and Cedric staring at each other.
Finally, Cedric broke the silence, "Um... can you still get Rat Potion from Mr. Scamander?"
"I should say I know how to brew it, and not just for rats, but for almost all pet potions," Kyle shrugged, not wanting to explain too much. "It's not that difficult, just a bit troublesome, so few people bother to learn it."
