Chapter 119: True Men Ride on Cannonballs
Chapter 119: True Men Ride on Cannonballs
"I really don't want to go. I'm exhausted. I want to go back to Marineford and sleep", Kuro groaned the moment they stepped outside.
Go to Shabondy to deal with those annoying pirates?
You want me to dig a grave for my promotion?
Forget about it!
Lucius Kro said with a smirk, "That's not an option, you know. Would you let an old man like me face those terrifying pirates alone? Those pirates who dared assault and abduct a World Noble are extremely dangerous."
"Exactly, they're super dangerous", Kuro immediately latched onto the excuse. "Which is why I shouldn't go either. How about showing some mercy to the youth for once, Gramps?"
"Ohohoho, checkmated me there, but no dice", Lucius Kro chuckled while scratching his head. "Because I'm your superior, the only way you can ignore my orders is by taking my position first."
When two scoundrels clash, there must be a victor.
Lucius Kro would never lose ground.
After all, he was Kuro's superior.
So Kuro had no choice but to follow him.
Though the main reason was that Lucius Kro had already notified Sengoku that the stage for the 'Pacifista' experiment was ready.
With 'Pacifista' in play, Kuro wouldn't need to lift a finger - he'd just go through the motions.
Descending from Mariejois, Lucius Kro and his group boarded the prepared warship heading for Proceeding Area 1-29.
Shabondy was vast. The incident site was far from their base, and walking would take hours. Going by warship, they could circle around and arrive in no time.
Lucius Kro was an exception, of course - he always moved at lightning speed.
"Gramps, since you're so fast, why don't you head over first? I'll catch up by warship", Kuro suggested cautiously.
He secretly hoped Lucius Kro would vanish in a flash while he leisurely rode the warship, arriving just in time to take credit without breaking a sweat.
"Old men deserve respect for their age. Let's be considerate of an elder's physical limits. Riding the warship is fine. Sengoku's already heading there", Lucius Kro replied casually. "When we arrive, we'll circle twice to wrap things up. Hand over a few ringleaders as scapegoats, and we're done."
Same thinking, huh?
Kuro pursed his lips and obediently followed Lucius Kro onto the warship.
...
Shabondy Archipelago, Proceeding Area 1-29 Entrance.
A warship had already arrived.
"So this is Shabondy", Lida said, hand shading her eyes as she gazed at the massive trees and root-formed islands. "Wow! Those bubbles are so pretty!"
"This isn't time for sightseeing", Klah interrupted beside her, adjusting his gleaming glasses. "This is our chance. Area 1-29 is a lawless zone filled with pirates, including the three main culprits who attacked the World Nobles. Catching any one of them completes our mission."
Once merits were credited to Kuro Mr., he'd get promoted, and they'd all benefit. Killing two birds with one stone.
This was why Klah insisted on joining immediately when Sengoku mentioned Luffy had attacked nobles at Shabondy.
This was an opportunity! Shabondy was the only rest stop before proceeding to the New World. Any pirate aiming for the New World would pass through here.
Pirates reaching Shabondy were no pushovers - they all carried bounties.
Bounties meant merits.
Glorious merits!
"Though I must admit, this was unexpected", Klah turned to observe four identical towering figures. "It's Bartolomeo Bear."
When he first saw them, he nearly jumped in shock.
The 'Pacifista' Project used Seven Warlords of the Sea as templates?
Bartolomeo Bear had quadruplets?!
Later he learned these were ultimate weapons modeled after the real Bartolomeo Bear. Their chests bore the abbreviation 'Pacifista': PX.
These four robots were PX-1 through PX-4.
The original prototypes.
Seeing Klah staring at the 'Pacifista' units, Sengoku explained:
"The Pacifista modification combines overwhelming physical strength with the Admiral's Devil Fruit abilities. Without an extraordinary body, you can't fully utilize that power. But such specimens are rare - Bear was perfect. The Punk Hazard modifications worked well too, though they cost a fortune. Each 'Pacifista' costs as much as a capital warship."
"Would Seven Warlords of the Sea really let themselves become test subjects?" Klah muttered.
Those were legendary figures!
Back when he was a pirate himself, the Seven Warlords were like deities. Sea Emperors were practically myths.
"Who knows? Bear volunteered. Anyway, we've arrived. Let's disembark."
Sengoku himself wasn't entirely clear, but the 'Pacifista' units were undeniably powerful.
With these creations, Klah had nothing to fear.
Even if these Bartolomeo Bear-based machines weren't as strong as the original, they'd still be formidable. With them leading, they might not even need to fight.
Wait...
Not need to fight?
Klah's expression turned peculiar.
So all the pirate captures would be thanks to 'Pacifista'? What did that have to do with them?
No way!
They couldn't let this machine hog the credit. They needed to personally capture pirates themselves. Otherwise, how would Kuro Mr. get his promotion!
...
Meanwhile, Shabondy was descending into chaos.
The main turmoil centered around lawless zones like Area 1-29, where black gangs, traffickers, slave traders, local bandits, and pirates gathered.
Luffy's reckless assault on World Nobles had every criminal panicking.
The Admirals were coming!
No one would escape!
Flee! They must flee!
A warship appeared in Grand Line's Area 27.
"Navy's here! Run for your lives!"
"It's the Admirals! Definitely the Admirals!"
Pirates in Area 27 scattered like birds.
"Oh~ So many pirates. How terrifying." Lucius Kro glanced sideways, eyes widening in mock surprise. "Can't let them escape."
He turned to a Navy officer and ordered, "Fire the cannons. Make those cannonballs fast."
What did that mean?
Kuro tilted his head.
Did he think a few cannonballs could kill this many pirates?
Or was he planning multiple salvos to plow the entire island?
Lucius Kro stood at the bow, one foot planted on a cannon mouth, glancing at Kuro.
Kuro understood instantly.
"Isn't this too dangerous? I'm not a Logia-type", Kuro waved his hands, reluctant.
"You're joking with an old man, Kuro?" Lucius Kro stared back.
With a sigh, Kuro stepped onto another cannon mouth.
No docks nearby made landing risky. Docking would take time, and all pirates would flee by then.
The fastest way forward?
Cannonballs.
Boom!
The bow's three main cannons fired simultaneously. Lucius Kro rode the central cannonball while Kuro leapt, feet planted firmly on the left-side projectile. Together, they soared toward Area 27's shore.
Boom!!
The three cannonballs exploded amidst fleeing pirates, kicking up dust and debris. Through the smoke, a yellow flash suddenly blazed, followed by a figure landing gracefully.
Kuro waved the smoke away from his face.
When the dust cleared, Lucius Kro stood on the battlefield.
Kuro leaned his left elbow on his sword hilt, pulling a cigar from his coat with his right hand, lighting it casually.
Made his decision.
Smoke in hand, watch the show, and not lift a finger.
