Chapter 119: Just Kids Being Mischievous
Chapter 119: Just Kids Being Mischievous
By the lakeside stone cottage, Lu Chen was about to collect the demon beast meat he had ordered when a late-stage Qi Refining cultivator approached him.
"Brother Lu, please wait. I have something to discuss with you."
"Oh? Brother Li, what can I do for you?" Lu Chen recognized the cultivator as someone who had also taken on the task of raising Flood Dragons. They occasionally crossed paths by the stone cottage and exchanged polite greetings.
"Brother Lu, one of my Flood Dragons was badly injured yesterday," Brother Li said, his face somber. "It was attacked by a group of Flood Dragons and Giant Pythons working together."
"This isn't the first time this has happened," he continued. "That group of Flood Dragons and Giant Pythons seems to be under your command, Brother Lu. I hope you can keep them in check. If one of them gets seriously injured and dies, it won't reflect well on either of us."
"Is that so?" Lu Chen replied nonchalantly. "I'm only responsible for feeding them the demon beast meat. What they do in their free time is not my concern."
"Besides, there are so many Flood Dragons and Giant Pythons in Thousand Dragon Lake. How can you be sure it was my Flood Dragon that attacked yours, Brother Li?" Lu Chen asked, his expression cold.
"A two-headed Flood Dragon was spotted at the scene of these fights," Brother Li said. "It's a rare variant, rarely seen in these parts. The only one I know of that fits that description is the one you keep."
"What's the point of having two heads if it doesn't use them? It stands out too much and can't even disguise itself," Lu Chen muttered under his breath, thinking that perhaps he had been too strict with his beasts lately. By allowing them to aid their companions, the fierce and belligerent two-headed Flood Dragon had found an outlet for its aggression, always rushing to the forefront of any fight and bullying other cultivators' beasts.
"Oh? If it was a two-headed Flood Dragon, then it might have been mine. I'm not sure about the others," Lu Chen said with a smile. "Besides, it's just kids being mischievous. No need to take it to heart, Brother."
"That's not right, Brother Lu," Brother Li said, his expression turning unpleasant. "Whose kids would beat someone else's to within an inch of their life?"
"Those Flood Dragons, Giant Pythons, and Variant Boas belong to different tribes," Lu Chen argued. "They are of different grades, and some are even natural enemies. For them to join forces against a single Flood Dragon, perhaps that Flood Dragon did something to provoke them? Maybe you should reflect on that, Brother Li."
"Indeed, these beasts fight tooth and nail over every piece of demon beast meat, constantly bickering among themselves," Brother Li said, taken aback. "How could they possibly unite against an outsider?"
A slight smile played on Lu Chen's lips as he stepped into the stone cottage to retrieve the demon beast meat. From the high platform, he picked up each carefully selected piece of meat and threw it precisely into the areas where the Flood Dragons and Giant Pythons waited.
The beasts were already accustomed to Lu Chen's feeding routine and patiently waited in their designated spots.
However, as Lu Chen finished throwing out the last piece of meat, a fire-red python caught his attention.
The giant python held its head high, its entire body shimmering with red scales that seemed to dance with spiritual energy, like flickering flames. It hissed from time to time as if enduring unbearable pain.
After a while, the flames retracted into the python's red scales, and Lu Chen sensed a significant increase in the spiritual power within the fire-red python.
"Could it be… it has advanced to the second-grade?" Lu Chen marveled as he gazed at the python.
The fire-red python, named Crimson Scale, was a variant python. It had been at the first-grade stage before, but with Lu Chen's careful nurturing and precise feeding, it had finally advanced to become a second-grade demon beast.
Lu Chen gazed down at the red-scaled python, the Flood Dragons, and the Giant Pythons as they swam towards him, imagining them as piles of Sword Pills.
Not only was he ensuring that each Flood Dragon was well-fed, but he was also catering to their individual preferences and providing them with the exact type of demon beast meat their bodies needed.
With this customized approach to their care, he was confident that the beasts he was raising would grow faster than those nurtured by his fellow sect members.
As Lu Chen indulged in these thoughts, a familiar voice interrupted him.
"Brother Lu, are you tending to your Flood Dragons?"
Lu Chen turned to see Huang Yuan, a Qi Refining cultivator at the peak of the ninth layer, approaching with a smile.
"Indeed, Brother Huang," Lu Chen replied.
"Your Flood Dragons seem to be thriving under your care, Brother Lu. I must ask for your guidance sometime," Huang Yuan said with a warm smile.
"You're too kind, Brother Huang. Is there something I can help you with?" Lu Chen asked.
"Well, I heard that you've been drawing blood from the Flood Dragons you're raising," Huang Yuan said, his smile fading slightly.
"In my opinion, these Flood Dragons belong to the sect, and we shouldn't cause them any harm. Moreover, I don't think this practice is beneficial for their growth. What do you think, Brother Lu?"
"Ah, someone reported me, huh..." Lu Chen immediately thought of the fellow sect member whose Flood Dragon had been badly injured.
He paused, choosing his words carefully.
"Brother Huang, I only take a small amount of blood, and it doesn't harm them in any way. It's merely for a thorough health check to identify any hidden ailments and ensure they're not infected by any impure substances." Lu Chen offered an explanation with an air of righteousness.
"Is that so?" Huang Yuan looked skeptical.
"Of course. It's the same reason I create customized diets for them, to ensure their rapid growth. And as you can see, one of the Giant Pythons has already advanced to the second-grade," Lu Chen said, pointing at the red-scaled python that was still visible below.
"In just over a month of your care, one of your Giant Pythons has advanced to the second-grade, Brother Lu. That's quite an impressive improvement," Huang Yuan acknowledged.
"However, it's hard to say if it's entirely due to your efforts. After all, that python is a variant, and its advancement to the second-grade was always a matter of time," Huang Yuan added.
As he finished speaking, the waters below stirred, and a snowy-white chilong burst out from the depths of the lake.
The chilong was surrounded by a chilling aura, freezing the surrounding waters into blocks of ice.
It devoured the abundant spiritual energy that surged towards it from all corners of the Thousand Dragon Lake.
"This is..."
Huang Yuan stood rooted to the spot, his eyes wide with a mix of surprise and uncertainty.
"Brother Huang, I have a question," Lu Chen said.
"If advancing from the first-grade to the second-grade is a natural progression, then is advancing from the second-grade to the third-grade also just as inevitable?" Lu Chen asked, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth as he looked at Huang Yuan.
"This ice chilong sure knows how to make an entrance. It chose the perfect time to advance. I guess all that ice-attribute demon beast meat I've been feeding it has paid off," Lu Chen mused to himself, feeling pleased with the third-grade chilong.
