Chapter 118: The Marriage Certificate
Chapter 118: The Marriage Certificate
Meng Tianlan burst into loud laughter, but midway through his boisterous cackling, his eyes rolled back, and he fainted.
Yu Li exclaimed, "Third Uncle!"
Meng Qianqian glanced at the snoring Meng Tianlan and sighed. She grabbed him and slung him over her shoulder with ease. Turning to Lu Yuan, she said, "Third Uncle has been rude. Xiao Jiu will take him home, and I shall visit the Grand Governor tomorrow to apologize on his behalf."
Then, addressing Yu Li, she said, "Cousin, let's head back. I'll take you to see the Imperial College another day."
Lu Yuan raised an eyebrow.
Yu Li was unsure if he should be more astonished by the fact that his cousin knew this person or by her incredible strength.
Also, he could have sworn she addressed him as "Grand Governor" earlier.
There was only one Grand Governor in the capital.
As Yu Li turned to look at Lu Yuan again, he saw that the latter had already strolled away in the opposite direction with an air of nonchalant elegance, standing out even amidst the bustling crowd.
"Cousin, let's go!"
Tan Er turned back to remind him.
"Coming."
Yu Li retracted his gaze and followed suit.
His cousin's maid was peculiar too. She didn't address her mistress as "Miss" or "Young Lady," nor did she refer to him as "Young Master Yu" or "Third Young Master."
This trip to the capital was turning out to be quite different from what he had imagined.
When Meng Qianqian carried the third uncle back to his home, Meng Bo and the seventh uncle were terrified.
Meng Bo hurried over to take Meng Tianlan from her: "Wh-what happened?"
Meng Qianqian explained, "Third Uncle got drunk. I'll take care of it from here, Li Mama. Which room does Third Uncle usually stay in?"
"This way!"
Li Mama pushed open a door.
She was used to this scene by now. The third master was an alcoholic, and it seemed that even after five years, this habit hadn't changed. As for their young lady's strength... well, Li Mama had long grown accustomed to that too.
The seventh uncle stared, his jaw agape: "Meng Xiang, am I seeing things? Is that... really the third young miss?"
A drunken grown man would be a challenge for him to carry, yet the third young miss did so with ease, not even breaking a sweat.
Meng Bo was equally astonished. When did their third young miss become so formidable?
The group entered the room, and Meng Qianqian had already placed the third uncle on the bed. Li Mama pulled the blanket over him.
The seventh uncle clicked his tongue in exasperation and poked Meng Tianlan's forehead: "You good-for-nothing. You were supposed to deal with Lu Lingxiao, but instead, you went drinking again!"
Tan Er spoke up earnestly: "Seventh Uncle, you've misunderstood Third Uncle. He really did go to cause trouble for Lu Lingxiao!"
The seventh uncle was shocked: "He did? Was he hurt?"
Tan Er shook her index finger and described the scene animatedly: "Third Uncle wasn't hurt at all. Lu Lingxiao, on the other hand, was punished with ninety strikes of the board!"
The seventh uncle looked at the snoring Meng Tianlan with suspicion: "Does the old third have such capability? I find that hard to believe."
Tan Er was a lively little storyteller: "Third Uncle is incredibly capable! On his first day here, he even paid respects to the Grand Governor, who is second only to the emperor... he's the empire's number one villain!"
The seventh uncle, along with Meng Bo and the others, were left dumbfounded.
Meng Tianlan slept through the night and well into the next afternoon. The hangover was brutal, and he felt like his head was about to split open, his brain buzzing incessantly.
What was even more terrifying was when Han Xia and Tan Er told him about the Grand Governor's fearsome reputation.
It was then that he realized he had just befriended the most notorious villain in the Great Zhou Empire. Meng Tianlan's legs turned soft, and he slid off the bed, landing on his knees.
Tan Er continued to frighten him: "The Grand Governor is unpredictable. When he's in a good mood, even if someone offends him, he won't get angry. But if he's in a foul mood, he'll make sure to settle the score ruthlessly!"
Meng Tianlan was on the verge of tears.
"Tan Er."
Meng Qianqian pushed the door open and entered.
"Hehe, Sister!" Tan Er grinned mischievously.
Seeing the third uncle's tearful face, Meng Qianqian understood that he must have realized the gravity of his blunder.
"Third Uncle, I have a question for you."
Meng Tianlan sniffed and sobbed: "When a man is about to die, his words are good. Ask away."
Meng Qianqian opened her mouth to speak but then closed it again. Fine, let this be a lesson for you. I'll scare you for a few more days.
Han Xia stifled her laughter and helped the third uncle back onto the bed.
Tan Er brought a small stool and placed it by the bed: "Sister, sit!"
Meng Qianqian took a seat.
Meng Tianlan looked her up and down and choked out: "How did you become so skinny? Where's my chubby little pig?"
Meng Qianqian decided to prolong his torment for a few more days, maybe even scare him to death.
Meng Tianlan suddenly remembered something: "Oh right, I heard from Han Xia that you fell into the water and injured your brain, and you don't even remember Meng Bo and Yu Li anymore. Do you still remember me, Third Uncle?"
Meng Qianqian thought for a moment. "I do remember something related to Third Uncle."
Meng Tianlan's eyes lit up. "What is it?"
Meng Qianqian replied, "When I was little, Third Uncle sold me for drinking money."
Meng Tianlan choked.
He cleared his throat vigorously. "How could that be called 'selling'? A master said you had a remarkable root bone and wanted to take you as his disciple. Third Uncle was just trying to find you a good teacher. Besides, didn't you end up going with him?"
"To be a nun under a monk?" Meng Qianqian asked.
Meng Tianlan fell silent.
"Never mind that," he quickly changed the subject. "You said you had a question for me. Ask away!"
Meng Qianqian also dropped the teasing tone. "Third Uncle, how did you mistake Lu Lingxiao for someone else?"
Meng Tianlan explained, "After I entered the city, I was originally planning to find someone from the Lu family. But halfway there, I got lost. I happened to overhear some people talking about Lu Lingxiao, so I asked them if they knew where the Lu family lived. He took me for one of the many people trying to curry favor with Lu Lingxiao. He said that the Lu family's door isn't easy to enter these days, and if I wanted to find him, I'd have to wait for him on his way back from court. He even offered to lead me there for a price."
"As for what happened next... you can probably guess."
That person pointed to Lu Yuan's carriage and said the one inside was Lu Lingxiao.
Meng Qianqian looked at him. "You believed him?"
Meng Tianlan said, "I'm not that stupid. I asked him what would happen if I got the wrong person. He rushed forward, knelt in front of the carriage, and shouted, 'Lord Lu, I have a grievance. Please help me get justice!' A guard pulled him away and told him to go to the yamen to appeal his case. The person inside the carriage did have the surname Lu, I just didn't expect it to be a different Lu..."
Tan Er snorted. "It must have been that despicable Lu family member... Lu... Lin... something!"
"Lu Lin? Who's that?" Meng Tianlan asked.
"A lowly scoundrel!" Tan Er replied, hands on her hips.
Meng Qianqian's voice turned cold. "First, they wrote a letter to summon the Meng family to the capital. Then, they sent someone to keep an eye on the Meng family's movements and waited for the right opportunity to make the Meng family offend Lu Yuan. This way, my biggest backer in the capital would be gone, and to avoid trouble, I'd have no choice but to flee back to Youzhou with my family."
Han Xia finally understood. "So that's what happened! She's so despicable! Luckily, Third Young Master didn't have time to offend the Grand Governor... otherwise..."
Meng Tianlan's eyes flickered.
Meng Qianqian, sharp as always, noticed his reaction and asked, "Third Uncle, you didn't really hurt Lu Yuan, did you?"
Meng Tianlan's guilty conscience showed as he replied, "I... I just... dislocated... I mean, the Grand Governor's... I mean, his brother's arm..."
Meng Qianqian took a sharp breath!
Ting Lan Garden
Lu Yuan didn't go to court today. He spent the entire day in his study, reviewing memorials.
A maid reported, "Grand Governor, Miss Meng is here."
Lu Yuan gave a faint "hmm" as a response.
Meng Qianqian entered, and the maid withdrew.
"Greetings, Grand Governor," Meng Qianqian said, performing a polite curtsy.
Lu Yuan didn't even lift his eyelids, continuing to flip through a book with his left hand.
Meng Qianqian glanced at his stiff right arm and asked with concern, "Grand Governor, haven't you treated your injury yet?"
Lu Yuan nonchalantly replied, "Zhang Dai isn't in the capital. I don't trust any other doctors."
Meng Qianqian paused for a moment before stepping forward. "Grand Governor, please forgive me."
She then grabbed Lu Yuan's arm and, with a single pull, popped the dislocated joint back into place.
Meng Qianqian saw that he was still staring at the book in his hand and asked subconsciously, "Grand Governor, what are you reading?"
Lu Yuan replied indifferently, "A marriage certificate. Your Third Uncle wrote it. He has betrothed you to me."
Meng Qianqian's temples began throbbing. This unreliable Third Uncle of hers had even written a marriage certificate and given it to Lu Yuan!
She cupped her hands in a respectful gesture and said, "Third Uncle was drunk and out of his mind. Please forgive his rudeness, Grand Governor."
Lu Yuan gave her a cold look. "You don't want to marry me?"
Meng Qianqian gritted her teeth. "Xiao Jiu... is willing. It's just that Xiao Jiu doesn't deserve the Grand Governor."
Lu Yuan coldly humphed. "Of course you don't deserve me."
Meng Qianqian breathed a sigh of relief.
Lu Yuan closed the marriage certificate. "However, I've considered it, and I do need someone to deal with Miaojiang. Rather than letting you harm others, it's better to have you repay your Third Uncle's debt."
Qianqian: This world has turned upside down in a way I can't comprehend!
