Chapter 1170: A Second Chance
Chapter 1170: A Second Chance
"I lost like this."
Shirley knelt on the ground, her face pale and stricken.
Thinking of her brutally murdered parents and the years of humiliation and suffering she endured, she had lived her entire life for the purpose of revenge, pouring everything she had into this goal. Today's crushing defeat felt like a complete negation of all her efforts, making her realize once again how powerless and insignificant she was.
It was as if, in an instant, she had reverted to that helpless young girl, witnessing the tragedy and the destruction of her family, unable to do anything but cry.
Just as she fell to her knees, a sudden burst of intense light appeared before her. Shirley involuntarily closed her eyes and raised her arm to shield herself. When she finally adjusted to the light and opened her eyes again, her pupils constricted, and she felt as if struck by lightning.
She saw the man before her.
His gentle expression, just as she remembered, his familiar face, every wrinkle identical to her dreams.
Shirley's heart trembled, and tears streamed down her face. She stammered, "Father?"
At that moment, she almost couldn't resist the urge to rush forward and embrace him, her rational mind, which knew that her long-dead father shouldn't be here, fading into the distance.
But the "father" did not greet her with the same gentleness as before. Instead, his voice was cold and distant. "No, what you see is just an illusion created by your own desires."
Shirley was taken aback.
"Perhaps now you understand what you truly want."
The "father" before her smiled with a hint of amusement.
"Revenge—really, is that what you want? After you achieve your revenge, what will you do with your life, now that you have no goal? If your deepest desire is revenge, why does your inner vision not show your enemies lying dead, but instead, this scene?"
Shirley sat there, tears slowly sliding down her pale cheeks.
She came to her senses and looked up again, only to see that the "father" she had longed for had vanished, replaced by the hateful white-haired man from the Public Security Bureau.
"Miss!"
Mizoguchi finally stepped forward, his face filled with concern, and helped Shirley to her feet.
Shirley clenched her fists, her body trembling with effort.
"Yes, that's what I want."
"I want my father, I want to feel those gentle hands once more. What's wrong with that!?"
Shirley's emotions spiraled out of control, and she roared.
"But what does it matter? What good does it do to want it? My parents are dead, dead for so many years. None of this can be brought back, never, ever again."
Youxuan spoke calmly. "Not necessarily."
Shirley's eyes widened as she looked up at Youxuan.
Was this guy pulling some ridiculous joke?
Did he really mean to say that people who had been dead for so long could be brought back from the grave?
Do you think life is a game where the dead can be resurrected?
She wanted to lash out at the absurdity but found herself unable to speak. At that moment, she realized that deep down, she had held onto a tiny, flickering hope—a hope so faint, like a candle in the wind, but it was there, and it had been reignited by "Godwin."
Through their recent duel, she had already understood that this man was extraordinary.
He possessed powers beyond the norm, unlike any of the strong individuals she had encountered in her life. No matter how absurd the idea, if this man said it was possible, maybe it really could be.
Shirley bit her lip and then looked up with determination. "If you can really do it, if you can really bring my parents back to life, then from now on, I will absolutely and unconditionally obey any of your commands, follow any of your instructions, and never have a single complaint."
"Oh no, no, no, you make it sound like I’m forcing you into something. Do I look that despicable?" Youxuan waved his hand helplessly. "Besides, bringing someone back to life? Ha ha ha, you give me too much credit. I’m just an ordinary Duelist; how could I have the power to bring the dead back to life?"
The faint hope that had ignited in Shirley’s heart flickered and then extinguished, her delicate face clouded with disappointment.
Of course, what was she thinking? How could anyone bring the dead back to life?
"But, it’s not impossible." Youxuan changed the subject. "From what it seems, you’ve been chasing down the trail of Taichi for most of your life, yet you seem to know nothing about them."
Shirley looked up, momentarily stunned. "What about Taichi?"
Youxuan was right. The Taichi organization had been hidden in the annals of history, influencing the world through controlling key individuals and institutions. Even when the truth was occasionally uncovered, the organization would either silence the discoverers or, if all else failed, rewrite history to eliminate any evidence and investigators.
Given these conditions, it was almost impossible for anyone to uncover the truth about Taichi.
Youxuan spoke plainly. "Taichi is an organization founded to alter human history, guiding it towards the future they desire. They traveled from the future to the past and planted seeds in the early stages of human civilization. By the time of your era, Taichi had become deeply entrenched, permeating every aspect of the world, making it nearly impossible for you to find any clues."
"Alter... history? Travel from the future to the past?"
Shirley was confused.
"Are you talking nonsense?"
Youxuan replied calmly. "Your father, before the disaster, must have realized that your family and business were involved in a project related to Taichi. He discovered a secret that should never have been known and could not accept Taichi’s arbitrary determination of human fate. So, he stole the crucial item and hid it in your toy, didn’t he?"
Shirley’s eyes widened in shock. She froze for a few seconds before slowly pulling out the card. It was a Magic Card named "Z-One." The last card her father left her, and the reason she came here to meet "Godwin", was to uncover the secret of this card.
She suddenly looked up. "Wait, travel to the past, alter history. You mean to say that I still have a chance to see my father again?"
"Yes."
Youxuan nodded, his tone calm.
"Taichi possesses the power of the ‘Time Machine,’ allowing them to travel to the past and alter the timeline. However, what they seek is the future of all humanity, which is full of variables and extremely difficult to shape as they desire. But if the goal is to rewrite the fate of just one family, or even specific individuals... with a time machine, it should be much simpler."
Shirley’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Time Machine, altering the past...
Did this mean she could prevent her parents' deaths from ever happening?
