Chapter 117: Kobold
Chapter 117: Kobold
Felix snapped back to reality.
"Oh, I was thinking a bit too deeply." He had just been reminiscing about the smartphones of the future, inspired by the twins' ideas, and spent some time in the Mind Chamber pondering the possibilities.
A feature similar to "text messaging" was something he could definitely manage, given the extensive alchemical texts in the Library.
However, if he wanted to implement more complex functions, that would be a different story. After all, wizards from centuries or even millennia ago didn't have the same level of creativity, and there was a lot that he would need to research and experiment with independently.
But... why bother? Why should he do everything himself?
He gazed at the twins. In the past, he had seen them as promising young wizards, but now he was thinking about how to nurture their talents without wasting their potential.
Maybe one day he could see magic phones become widespread?
Felix was always very goal-oriented, but he wasn't opposed to making the wizarding world better, especially when it didn't require much effort.
He said to the twins, "I could certainly tell you the answers directly, or even complete your ideas for you, but I prefer to cultivate your abilities."
Felix took out a piece of parchment and quickly wrote down a list of book titles, along with the page numbers.
"Here's a reference list. It contains everything you need—two of the books are in the Restricted Section, so I'll give you a pass as well."
"Thank you very much, Professor Hep", the twins said with exaggerated gratitude, looking so excited that they seemed ready to embrace him at any moment.
Felix quickly waved his hands—
"And, regarding the materials, you might consider the types of wood used for wand cores."
"Professor, do you have any recommendations?"
"From a personal standpoint, I prefer ebony, which is as dark as inkstone." Felix showed them his wand. "However, reason tells me that chestnut wood is a better choice. It has a very balanced nature, with no particular inclinations."
The twins left with joy.
After the second afternoon class, Felix headed straight for the Great Hall. On the way, he saw a group of young wizards gathered around, with Professor Mcgonagall standing in the center of the crowd, her lips tightly pressed together, looking quite serious.
Which young wizard had caused trouble this time?
As Felix approached, he noticed three creatures standing in front of Professor Mcgonagall. They were so short that they had been hidden by the young wizards.
They were Kobolds, and Felix found them quite intriguing.
These creatures had deep green skin, typically standing no taller than a meter, with rough, fierce faces. Even when expressionless, they exuded a sense of gloom.
Seeing the Kobolds, Felix was reminded of someone—Farris Spavin, the former Minister of Magic, who held two records: one for ascending to the position at the ripe age of 109, and the other for serving a 38-year term.
Nearly a century had passed since his time, and those records still stood unbroken.
One of his peculiar behaviors was telling a vulgar joke at the 'Wizard and Allied Races Conference' about a "Centaur, Ghost, and Kobold walking into a bar", which offended the Centaurs and led to an unsuccessful assassination attempt.
...
Felix stood outside the circle, watching as the most sullen-looking Kobold, who appeared to be their leader, argued with Professor Mcgonagall. He carried a dirty bundle and gestured wildly as he spoke.
"Lady, we received an invitation, you can't cancel it!"
Professor Mcgonagall, growing impatient, said, "I've already told you three times. It was Lockhart who invited you, but he is about to be tried by the Wizengamot."
"But... but... we have many talents, let me show you."
The short Kobold opened the tattered bundle on his back and pulled out a pair of golden wings, which he strapped to his back. He then picked up a small, delicate harp.
The other two Kobolds beat a somber rhythm and performed stiff, awkward dance moves.
Thus, the young Wizards were astonished to see a glum-faced "little Cupid" with golden wings and a harp, belting out a song—
"Alilala~"
"We are the messengers of love~"
"Kicking people's shins along the way, tirelessly~"
"Delivering declarations of love~"
Felix suddenly froze, staring dumbfounded at the three Kobolds, his hair standing on end.
The other young Wizards felt much the same. Harry's face seemed to be twitching, Ron's mouth was wide open, and his body was leaning back as far as it could go.
Hermione listened expressionlessly, her lips pressed tightly together, making her look eerily similar to Professor Mcgonagall.
Harry thought to himself that if anyone sent this guy to confess to him, he would be so embarrassed that he would turn into steam and vanish on the spot.
After the awkward performance, the Kobolds stopped. Throughout the ordeal, Professor Mcgonagall's lips had been trembling. "You... you..."
"Lady, we are professionals. I can even improvise a dance, singing and all..." The Kobold's face twisted from side to side, as if searching for a target. Wherever his gaze landed, people cleared out.
Finally, the Kobold's eyes darted back and forth between Harry and Felix.
Felix's heart tightened. Few people could make him feel nervous, but this Kobold undoubtedly did.
He stepped forward, his wand silently casting a Silent Spell—Silentio.
The Kobold opened his mouth but no sound came out. He frantically patted his throat.
"Professor Mcgonagall, what happened?"
Mcgonagall sighed in exasperation. "Gilderoy Lockhart's special Valentine's Day program—having Kobolds dress as little Cupids to deliver love confessions for students."
"..." Felix said, "He really thinks ahead. It's been about half a month since he was captured."
Professor Mcgonagall replied, "In fact, he booked them a month ago. According to them", she snorted at the Kobolds, "they are very popular."
She cleared her throat and addressed the Kobolds, "You are not under contract with Hogwarts, so I regret to inform you—" Professor Mcgonagall couldn't bring herself to finish the sentence.
The Kobolds began to cry and plead, a bizarre sight—serious and sullen, they silently shed tears, leaving the young Wizards feeling conflicted, unsure whether to laugh or sympathize.
"We'll offer a discount..." the lead Kobold said. "It's tough, our team might starve."
In the end, Professor Mcgonagall took them away, leaving the issue for Dumbledore to handle.
Not long after, the latest news spread—
Dumbledore agreed to allow the Kobold troupe to perform at the Valentine's Day banquet but refused their offer to deliver love letters and read confessions for free.
In the common room, a senior student provided more accurate information: "It seems Dumbledore's decision was to welcome the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, who will be starting that day."
