Chapter 117: A Few Thoughts on Course Selection
Chapter 117: A Few Thoughts on Course Selection
"Will these courses actually be useful to us? We need to analyze each one individually. After the analysis, you'll find it much easier to choose the courses you need", Liam said.
"Let's start with the third-year electives: Divination, Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Ancient Runes, and Muggle Studies. Everyone must choose at least two." Liam paused here, noticing Hermione's focused attention, and continued, "First, let's talk about Divination and Arithmancy. These two subjects have some overlapping content, but I personally lean towards Arithmancy."
"Why?" Hermione asked.
"Arithmancy involves complex mathematical problems and is very useful in the study of Magic Arrays. Many Gringotts curse-breakers have studied this subject. On the other hand, Divination is different. From what I know, Divination in the wizarding world is a talent-based discipline. Without the talent, you won't be able to learn it, no matter how hard you try. It's like how we can practice all we want, but we'll never be as good at Quidditch as Harry."
"What about the other courses?" Hermione, after hearing Liam's analysis, didn't express her own opinion but followed up with another question.
"If you plan to work in the field or go on adventures, Care of Magical Creatures is very important. Some positions in the Ministry of Magic also require knowledge of this subject.
Ancient Runes, on the other hand, delves into ancient magic and the foundational magical runes. This is a must-learn subject for any wizard aspiring to achieve academic success. In terms of value, it ranks among the top in Hogwarts' curriculum.
Muggle Studies, however, is quite the opposite. Apart from a few specific positions in the Ministry of Magic, this course is not very useful for us Muggle-borns. At least, I find it silly to explain the function of a rubber duck or draw how to move things without magic."
"Moreover, the biggest difference between the wizarding world and the Muggle world is the emphasis on personal power. For example, Professor Dumbledore is considered the representative of the British wizarding world, not Fudge. Why? Because Dumbledore is regarded as the greatest White Wizard in the world. If you aspire to change the entire wizarding world, I believe that your personal strength is essential."
Hermione nodded silently after listening to Liam's explanation. Liam knew he didn't need to say more, as Hermione was a very independent thinker. At this point, adding more would be inappropriate.
When the time came to submit their course selections on Monday, Liam noticed that Hermione had chosen the same courses as him: Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, and Care of Magical Creatures.
Overall, not many students in Gryffindor chose Ancient Runes and Arithmancy, as these courses were rumored to be more challenging. Most students, like Harry, Ron, and Neville, opted for Care of Magical Creatures and Divination.
Liam chose these two courses because Arithmancy only required a level of mathematical proficiency similar to the College Entrance Exam, which wasn't too difficult. Learning this subject would be very useful for breaking many magical traps and could be highly beneficial during adventures.
He chose Ancient Runes purely because he had received a complete inheritance from an ancient Viking wizard, which included knowledge of Ancient Runes. After reviewing Percy's Ancient Runes textbook, he found that the content in the book was less comprehensive than what he already knew. Given that this subject was both prestigious and easy to score well in, why wouldn't he choose it?
Hermione chose these two classes because she was a true academic genius, eager to learn as much as possible. It was no surprise that she always came first in her year exams. After all, it's hard to compete with someone who is both smarter and more diligent than you.
In a year without the Basilisk causing chaos, everything followed the usual academic schedule. It was once again time for the Quidditch match, this time between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Early in the morning, the entire Gryffindor team gathered at the Gryffindor table for breakfast.
Captain Wood was in high spirits. "Perfect weather for a Quidditch match!" he exclaimed, piling scrambled eggs onto each player's plate, especially Harry's.
"Harry, you need to eat a good breakfast. Playing Quidditch is a physical game, and you'll need the energy to last until the end of the match."
However, Harry's face showed a look of unease. The memory of being chased by Bludgers last time, especially when one of them was controlled by a house-elf, was still vivid and unpleasant.
As Harry's mind wandered, a hand landed on his shoulder. He looked up to see Liam, with Hermione and Ron standing beside him.
"Don't worry", Liam said. "Professors Mcgonagall and Flitwick will be here today, and we'll be sitting next to them. If anything goes wrong, we can get the professors' help right away."
This reassurance helped Harry relax, and during the match, he successfully caught the Golden Snitch, giving Gryffindor a lead of nearly 200 points over Hufflepuff.
It seemed that Dobby wasn't around today, perhaps because the Malfoys were busy with something. After the victory celebration, Ron voiced his theory.
Ron's guess turned out to be correct, as the next day's Daily Prophet reported that Arthur Weasley had investigated the Malfoy family and recovered a large amount of Dark Magic artifacts from the Chamber of Secrets in their home.
Liam thought this might have something to do with him. Later that night, while brewing a Sneezing Potion with the Weasley Twins, the twins complained about their father working overtime but failing to find the Dark Magic items hidden by Pureblood families.
After listening to them, Liam shared all he knew about the Chamber of Secrets and various methods of hiding treasure, including the idea that the Malfoys might have their secret storage under the living room floor. He joked, "After all, the most dangerous place can also be the safest."
It seemed the twins had written all this advice in a letter to their father. Sure enough, when they came to thank Liam later that night, they promised they hadn't told anyone else and had claimed the ideas as their own in the letter.
This explained why the twins would go on to run such a successful business. They were skilled at putting themselves in others' shoes and thinking about what would benefit others, which made people happy and strengthened their friendships.
Everyone was in high spirits that evening, and they successfully brewed a Fever Potion that wouldn't harm the body. Liam's medical knowledge had helped them rule out many ingredients, saving the Weasley Twins from numerous rounds of painful self-experimentation.
The next step was to turn the liquid into a solid and mix it with some unrelated elixirs to obscure the formula. Based on Liam's assessment of their progress, they might have a finished product by the summer vacation.
