Chapter 1169: A Treacherous World
Chapter 1169: A Treacherous World
On the eve of dawn, at the Death Eaters' temporary base, Bellatrix had just concluded a vexing impromptu meeting to finalize preparations for their upcoming mission. Despite the possibility of walking into a trap, they couldn't afford to be unprepared. The insidious tactics of the Ministry of Magic had taught many Death Eaters that the world was a treacherous place.
"You're really not coming, Narcissa?" Bellatrix hoped that her sister would support her at this time.
"No, Bella. I can't afford any mishaps right now. Draco still needs me." Narcissa gave Bellatrix an apologetic look.
"You don't think much of this mission?"
Bellatrix grabbed her sister's hand, her face betraying her disappointment, "Don't you trust me?"
"As much as I hate to say anything that might jinx it, you need to be careful. I suspect this might be a trap, and Lucius fell for something similar." Narcissa averted her gaze and whispered, "That Mudblood is too clever and treacherous, and he can predict future events. I believe this is the main reason why the Dark Lord is so eager to get rid of him."
"I know," Bellatrix said impatiently.
Of course, she was aware of the Mudblood's cunning nature, and Lucius Malfoy's misfortune served as a stark reminder.
To avoid walking into a trap, Bellatrix had long discussed with her husband, Rodolphus, about using Galleons to recruit a batch of disgruntled wizards from Knockturn Alley to act as cannon fodder.
Now, this group would finally prove useful.
One batch of people would accompany them to the remote village in Devon, while another group had already been causing chaos across Britain, drawing the attention of the Ministry of Magic and creating opportunities for their upcoming actions.
After all, the wealthy Lestrange family had no shortage of money, and spending a thousand Galleons to take out the Mudblood's life in exchange for the Dark Lord's favor was undoubtedly a very worthwhile investment.
It was somewhat ironic that Lucius Malfoy had also used a similar method as a backup plan.
However, after his failure and capture, many Death Eaters privately mocked his stupidity and incompetence.
Yet, when faced with Albert and his ability to predict the future, they realized that Lucius Malfoy's approach was the best they could come up with in a short period.
"What are you worried about, Narcissa?"
After Bellatrix left, Aleucto Carrow, who had been leaning against the door frame, suddenly asked.
"I'm just... uneasy."
In truth, Narcissa didn't know exactly what she was worried about.
"I have a feeling that things might not go smoothly tonight. Since that Mudblood can predict the future, he must have foreseen this situation. The fact that we were able to find his hiding place makes me fear that this is yet another trap."
Narcissa wasn't overestimating Albert; the memory of Lucius' experience was simply too vivid. Anyone who had gone through something similar would approach Albert with extreme caution, always second-guessing if it was another trap he had set up.
"I think your worries are unfounded. That Mudblood is still human, and I believe that this time, the real target isn't him but the Weasley boy. They don't have any prophetic abilities." Aleucto Carrow pulled out a pair of black magic defense gloves, acquired from the black market, and put them on.
It was somewhat amusing that even the Death Eaters needed black magic defense against dark arts.
Signs indicated that the Aurors of the Ministry of Magic rarely used lethal black magic. Instead, items that could deflect hexes and weaken dark magic were more suitable for their use.
Death Eaters who valued their lives would usually keep a few such items on hand to protect against sneak attacks from behind.
Of course, many Death Eaters scoffed at the idea, and even with ample Galleons, it was difficult to acquire high-quality black magic defense items.
After all, the shops selling these items were now controlled by the Ministry of Magic, and all purchases were uniformly recorded.
In the darkest hour before dawn, a remote village in Devon received a group of unwelcome visitors.
The Lestrange brothers, cloaked in black and wearing metal masks, were quietly casting the Anti-Disillusionment Charm around the Mudblood's residence, preventing anyone inside from escaping by Disillusionment.
On the other side, Bellatrix, accompanied by several Death Eaters, was forcibly breaking through the defensive magic around the house, preparing to storm in and kill everyone inside.
The seemingly powerful protective magic proved no match for their brute force. As Bellatrix and her group broke into the house, a shrill whistle pierced the air above the village, as if signaling that something terrible was about to happen.
"Damn, it's an alarm! Don't let that Mudblood get away!"
Bellatrix violently destroyed everything in her way, but when they burst into the room, it was empty—no sign of the panicked and helpless prey she had imagined.
However, they did find traces of the occupant in the bedroom, indicating that he had likely fled in a hurry upon detecting their presence.
"He must be hiding somewhere nearby. With the Anti-Disillusionment Charm in place, he can't have gotten far!" Aleucto Carrow surveyed the room and quickly made his assessment.
"Burn this place to the ground. I don't believe he can hide from us for long."
Bellatrix agreed with Aleucto, suspecting that the Mudblood was hiding somewhere close by. Black flames erupted from the tip of her wand.
"Don't..."
The devil's fire landed on the bed and raged uncontrollably.
"Have you gone mad?"
One of the Death Eaters turned and left immediately. He wanted nothing to do with the devil's fire.
The others quickly followed suit, leaving behind Bellatrix, who was laughing maniacally.
She believed that if the Mudblood was hiding here, the devil's fire would surely turn him into ashes. If he wanted to survive, he would have to flee.
However, as the devil's fire consumed the bedroom under Bellatrix's control, there was no sign of the Mudblood.
Bellatrix's face twisted in anger. She knew he had escaped.
Boom! Boom! Boom! A series of explosions rang out from outside, and before Bellatrix could react, she heard someone shouting, "Ambush! This is a trap!"
"Why..."
Bellatrix's face darkened, just as Narcissa had warned. They had walked right into another ambush set by the Ministry of Magic.
"This is impossible. Veritaserum can't lie. Could that Mudblood have predicted this attack in advance?"
Aleucto Carrow turned to Bellatrix and said, "We should leave immediately."
"I will, but not yet. I'm going to teach those Ministry scumbags a lesson." Bellatrix waved her wand, and the devil's fire transformed into a fiery whirlwind under her control, burning through the roof. She intended to use the devil's fire to punish the intruders outside.
"What's that?"
Aleucto peered through the opening in the roof, his mouth slightly agape as he watched fireballs flying toward them.
"Damn it!" Bellatrix tried to control the devil's fire to consume the incoming spells.
However, a large number of curses still struck "Albert's home," blowing the house to smithereens. Even the Death Eaters surrounding the house to prevent Albert's escape were affected by the explosion, and those unfortunate souls who failed to erect protective barriers in time were knocked to the ground by the blast and debris.
