Chapter 116: Daily Life and Course Selection
Chapter 116: Daily Life and Course Selection
Liam spent the remaining holiday time happily and productively. He successfully joined the Weasley Brothers' Research Team and used his knowledge of medicine and Herbology to significantly advance some of their projects.
For example, they had already developed a prototype of Vomit Sweets that could induce vomiting without causing harm. The only drawback was that the vomiting could only be stopped once the effects wore off, and they hadn't yet found a corresponding antidote.
In addition, Liam considered whether he should go to the Room of Requirement to destroy Ravenclaw's Diadem, as he already had a Basilisk Fang that could damage the diadem.
However, after some thought, he decided against it. In the original story, the diadem had remained undisturbed for decades before being destroyed by Fiendfyre, without harming anyone in the meantime. Therefore, the urgency to destroy it wasn't as strong.
Moreover, unlike the Diary, which Voldemort created as a teenager using a regular notebook bought from a Muggle street, the Horcrux in the Room of Requirement was made during Voldemort's most powerful period using Ravenclaw's Diadem. This artifact was on par with Gryffindor's Sword, and Liam couldn't guarantee his safety while destroying the Horcrux.
To ensure his safety, Liam pretended to be looking for treasure and explored the areas within the Room of Requirement where things were hidden. He confirmed that Ravenclaw's Diadem was quietly resting on the head of an ugly statue.
Fortunately, the Horcrux hadn't been activated due to Liam's activities, and there were no dramatic events like a second Horcrux attacking students, which often happened in fan fiction. Otherwise, this semester would have been very eventful.
Of course, it would be a waste to leave empty-handed. After spending the morning carefully selecting, Liam found an excellent Charms Class Notes. The last few pages of the notebook contained scribbled notes explaining why it had been discarded: the owner's boyfriend had broken up with her, and he had given her the notebook.
Relationship issues are always among the most difficult problems in the world. Liam shrugged and left the Room of Requirement with the notebook under his arm.
Once he confirmed that everything was safe, life became much easier. However, good times are always short-lived, and the new semester soon began.
Everything returned to the normal school routine, with the only issue being that Lockhart continued to be reckless. Perhaps feeling that mere performances were not enough, he decided to add magic to one of his lessons.
That day, Hermione was called up to perform as a ghost. Perhaps it was an unlucky day, as Hermione seemed in a bad mood. As soon as Lockhart called out "begin", she quickly cast an Impediment Jinx on him. Lockhart was thrown back, hit his head on the door frame, and passed out.
"Nice one", Liam whispered, giving Hermione a thumbs-up. Hermione smiled sheepishly when she saw him.
Someone ran out to fetch Professor Mcgonagall, who was preparing for her next class, and she used a Levitation Charm to carry Lockhart to the Hospital Wing. The students buzzed with excitement in the classroom, as this was not the first time Lockhart had made a mistake. Some began to question his competence.
After the chaotic Defense Against the Dark Arts class, many students lost faith in the subject. At the homework help session that evening, Ginny suddenly stood up and asked:
" Hermione, Liam, can you tell us how to do well in Defense Against the Dark Arts class? We feel like the daily dramatic exercises aren't helping much", Colin said, and a few first-year students nodded in agreement.
" I think Defense Against the Dark Arts is a practical course. Besides understanding the principles and memorizing the textbook, you need to practice it", Hermione explained.
" So, who can we turn to if we have questions?" Colin asked.
" I think you should start by discussing with each other, then ask some upperclassmen. If that doesn't work, you can ask other professors. Just avoid Lockhart", Liam replied.
After that, Liam saw Colin and Ginny approach Harry Potter, looking excited to have an excuse to get close to their idol.
This must count as doing a good deed, Liam thought to himself, watching Harry's pained expression.
Easter arrived, and for the second-year students, an important event occurred: choosing their elective courses for third year.
It was a weekend, and after the weekly Combat Training, Liam returned to the Common Room after lunch to find Harry and Ron playing Quidditch at the Quidditch pitch.
Looking at the empty room, Liam called Hermione to go sunbathe by the lake. He felt that staying cooped up in the castle all day would make a person moldy. Especially since, apart from the first-year flying lessons, the only outdoor class for second-year students was Herbology, and that hardly counted as being outdoors when it was in a glass greenhouse.
" I think it will impact our future, so we need to be careful", Hermione said, even outside the castle, still holding her third-year course catalog. " What do you think about me taking all the courses? The schedule doesn't say it's not allowed, and I'm sure wizards have a way to manage taking multiple classes at once."
" I don't think that's a good idea", Liam said. " Human energy is limited. For a true Sage, learning to let go is more valuable. I think selecting all the courses would highlight your inability to focus on one thing. Prioritizing and distinguishing between important and less important courses is crucial."
Liam's comment seemed to confuse Hermione, and she immediately pulled out the course catalog. " But I think every course is important."
" Okay, since you believe choosing courses will affect your future, can you tell me what you plan to do in the future?" Liam thought for a moment and started with a basic question.
" The future?" Hermione seemed a bit lost. After all, for a 12-year-old girl, the future was still a bit distant.
Seeing Hermione's confusion, Liam almost wanted to take a picture of the moment. Hermione was usually resourceful and capable, so seeing her look so lost was rare.
A few minutes later, as Liam started to count the suckers on the Giant Squid's tentacles in the Black Lake out of boredom, Hermione came back to her senses. " My short-term goal is to protect the people I care about, and my long-term goal is to change the deep-seated discrimination against non-magical people and their affairs in the Wizarding World."
After speaking, Hermione looked at Liam, hoping for his evaluation. Liam thought for a moment and said, " Your goals are challenging, but not impossible. You need to select the courses that will help you achieve them."
" What do you think are the useful courses?" Hermione asked.
