Chapter 1153: Allies
Chapter 1153: Allies
Realizing that the defensive resistance it was so proud of seemed ineffective against the giant insect in front of it, Marshmallow immediately panicked and turned to look at Youxuan, its face pleading for help.
And Youxuan didn’t let it down: “Then activate the Cover Card.
Trap Card: ‘Scrap Scarecrow’!”
The trap flipped, and a small, cross-shaped metal scarecrow flew forward, acting as a shield in front of Youxuan. The Plague Worm crashed into the scarecrow, sparks flying in all directions as if a translucent barrier had just formed in front of the scarecrow.
The Executor furrowed his brow. “What?”
“The Scrap Scarecrow can negate the Attack of one of your monsters,” Youxuan said with a slight smile, waving his hand. “And after activation, this card isn’t sent to the Graveyard but can be re-covered directly on the field.”
With that, the metal scarecrow that had just blocked the Plague Worm’s Attack was pulled back into the Trap Card by a few rusty wires and re-covered on the field.
The Scrap Scarecrow, a soulful trap that ran through the entire 5DS series, was one of Yusei Fudo’s most frequently used and iconic traps. The ability to re-cover after negating an Attack allowed it to be repeatedly used as long as it remained on the field.
Of course, according to the rules, a Trap Card cannot be activated in the same turn it is covered. So even if it is re-covered, it must wait until the next turn to be activated again. Therefore, the effect of the Scrap Scarecrow can be seen as “negating one Attack per turn.”
Yusei had been using this trap since his debut in the newbie village, all the way through to the final battle of the series, and it even played a crucial role in his strategic battles against Zone.
“Hmph, using a trap to stall, huh? It’ll only delay your inevitable demise.”
The Executor snorted.
“Turn ends.”
Youxuan: “My Turn, Draw!”
First, he changed Marshmallow’s battle position: “Change Marshmallow to Defense Position.”
The soft, white little creature crouched down, switching from Attack to Defense.
[Marshmallow, Defense: 500]
This way, at least Marshmallow wouldn’t become a weak point to be exploited.
“Next, Normal Summon ‘Submarine Automaton’!”
One of Youxuan’s Soul Monsters, but one that hadn’t seen action in a long time. A small submarine emerged from the ground, accompanied by splashing water, its anthropomorphic eyes darting around.
[Submarine Automaton, Attack: 800]
“Battle,” Youxuan said. “Submarine Automaton, Attack!”
As he gave the order, the small submarine dove underground, disappearing with a splash.
The Executor was taken aback. “Attack with only 800 Attack Power?”
“The Submarine Automaton’s effect,” Youxuan smirked. “This card can attack directly.”
The Submarine Automaton emerged from the Executor’s backfield, firing several torpedoes that exploded in quick succession on the Executor’s face. The Executor raised his arm to block the impact, but his body still slid back half a step from the force.
[Executor, LP: 4000 → LP: 3200]
“And after the Submarine Automaton’s Attack, it automatically switches to Defense Position.”
Youxuan waved his hand casually.
[Submarine Automaton, Attack: 800 → Defense: 1800]
The submarine quickly retreated, returning to Youxuan’s field, its anthropomorphic little hands crossed in front of it.
One hit and run, truly exhilarating.
“Hmph, a sneaky little submarine.” The Executor sneered. “Then next turn, I’ll start with you.”
“Is that so?”
Youxuan smiled and slowly inserted another card into the back field.
“You’d better step up your game.
I’ll place a card face-down in the back field and then activate this card.”
Youxuan raised the card in his hand above his head.
“Continuous Spell, ‘Royal Temple’!”
The office setting around them suddenly transformed. Fragments of floating spells refracted a cold blue light, pinning the shadows of both duelists to the obsidian floor tiles covered in hieroglyphs. The intricate ancient priestly inscriptions seemed to wriggle, like desert vipers slithering across the stone slabs, as the majestic golden hall enveloped the entire arena with a chilling aura.
Indeed, it was a Continuous Spell, but its activation was as grand as a Field Spell, complete with a dramatic scene change.
Such cards were not unheard of. In the original series, some non-Field Spells also had similar effects. For instance, Professor Daigusto’s famous “Macro Cosmos” was a Continuous Trap, yet it summoned a starry cosmic field upon activation.
In the DM anime, “Royal Temple” first appeared in Rishid’s possession, a card exclusive to Marik’s Tombkeeper clan. At that time, the anime version of Royal Temple was indeed a Field Spell. Youxuan’s Royal Temple was originally obtained from the Tombkeepers, but he had since modified it to have the old effect of a real card.
Until 2015, the real card “Royal Temple” had the effect of allowing the controller to activate a Trap Card immediately upon setting it. However, due to this effect being too overpowered and disrupting balance, it often led to unreasonable loops and was subsequently banned for a long time.
In 2015, Corporation K revised the effect, adding a “once per turn” restriction, allowing the controller to activate only one Trap Card immediately upon setting it each turn. As a result, the power of Royal Temple was significantly reduced, but it also ended its long-term banishment.
Youxuan: “My turn is over.”
The Executor instinctively sensed a foreboding presence from the temple: “What is this?”
“Who knows?”
Youxuan shrugged with a smile.
“Why don’t you try it out?”
The Executor remained silent.
Though he had no concrete evidence, he instinctively felt a dangerous aura emanating from the golden temple. It gave him a terrible premonition that trying it out might lead to his downfall.
But he quickly suppressed this feeling: “My turn, draw!”
He was the Executor of Taiichi, the highest-ranking official below the Three Emperors. He had walked through countless timelines, clearing out numerous traitors and threats to the organization’s security, including some of the top duelists in various timelines.
His allies had nothing to fear.
“My turn, draw!”
The Executor glanced at the card he drew and looked up at the marshmallow, which had already huddled into a defensive position.
“An annoying thing that can’t be destroyed in battle. I’ll take care of it first.
Activate Spell Card, ‘Soul Capturer’!
Destroy one monster on the opponent’s field, and then the opponent gains 1000 Life Points.”
The Executor pointed at Youxuan’s marshmallow.
“Destroy the marshmallow!”
As he spoke, a demonic claw shot out from the void, grabbing the marshmallow and tightening its grip, as if about to crush it instantly!
The marshmallow’s “face” changed dramatically, and it turned to look at Youxuan again.
Save me!
Youxuan did not disappoint: “Activate face-down card, Counter Trap ‘Scrap Fence’!
When a monster on my field is about to be destroyed, this card prevents that monster from being destroyed by card effects this turn!” (Original card effect)
