Chapter 115: A Sudden Uprising! 【1320】
Chapter 115: A Sudden Uprising! 【1320】
As Feng Ye entered the tent alongside Tsunade, Hiruzen Sarutobi furrowed his brows slightly.
"You suspect that there's something amiss with the group of Cloud ninjas who infiltrated the borders of the Fire Country?"
"Yes," Feng Ye replied calmly. "A group of around twenty Cloud ninjas appearing within our borders and just happening to be spotted by our intelligence unit is a little too convenient. I fear they may have a more elaborate plan in motion beyond merely disrupting our supply lines."
Hiruzen stroked his chin in contemplation. "Your concerns are valid... However, the Cloud ninjas may have intentionally sent a small team of twenty to lure either you or Tsunade away, only to launch a full-scale frontal assault and catch us off guard. If you were both to leave, our forces here would be significantly weakened."
"Both scenarios are possible, but I lean more towards the former," Feng Ye said. "Sacrificing a twenty-person elite squad to lure either Tsunade-sensei or me away doesn't seem very practical. Even if the Cloud ninjas launch a sudden attack, we would still have time to react."
"Moreover, how can they be sure that either you or I would definitely go after that squad? It's just as likely that we would send a fifty-person squad to wipe them out. If their numbers were doubled, then the latter scenario would be more plausible." Feng Ye was almost certain that there was something off about the Cloud ninja squad, and based on this assumption, it was easy to identify some 'problems' with their strategy.
Feng Ye paused before continuing, "Even if the situation you're concerned about arises, Fire Shadow, with my speed, I can return before the Cloud ninjas' full-scale offensive reaches us."
Hearing this, Hiruzen, who had been deep in thought, relaxed slightly.
Indeed, if the Cloud ninjas were to take advantage of the situation to launch a full-scale attack, they wouldn't be able to do so without making any noise. With Feng Ye's high mobility, he could easily manage this two-pronged operation.
"In that case, you should go with Tsunade." Hiruzen nodded and turned to Tsunade. "I'll assign an additional liaison ninja to your team to maintain constant communication. Report immediately if anything unusual happens."
...
Half a day later, Tsunade and Feng Ye, leading over fifty ninjas, shuttled through the Fire Country from the frontline camp and arrived at the location where the intelligence unit had spotted the Cloud ninjas.
According to the intelligence unit's information, it didn't take long to track down the Cloud ninjas' trail and roughly determine their target.
"They're probably planning to destroy the Ni Valley Bridge and the Ko Valley Bridge to deal a heavy blow to our resource supply lines... It seems more likely that they'll split into two teams based on the situation." Tsunade held a map in her hand, her eyes flashing with calculation.
Feng Ye thought for a moment before speaking. "The first squad and the intelligence unit will follow me and Tsunade-sensei to the Ni Valley Bridge. The second, third, and fourth squads will go to the Ko Valley Bridge... Remember to report immediately upon discovering the Cloud ninjas and refrain from engaging without orders."
The Konoha ninjas gave Feng Ye odd looks upon hearing this instruction.
Normally, with their current numbers, Tsunade and Feng Ye would each lead a team, ensuring that whichever group encountered the Cloud ninjas would have the advantage in numbers. However, Feng Ye's decision seemed to distribute their forces rather awkwardly.
Several jonin exchanged glances, then turned to look at Tsunade. She was the overall captain of this squad, and the final decision rested with her.
"We'll follow Feng Ye's plan," Tsunade said after a moment's thought, agreeing with Feng Ye's strategy.
The reason was simple. Although she felt that the Cloud ninjas were most likely two separate teams aiming to attack the two bridges without any other ulterior motives, Feng Ye's decision to split their forces wasn't necessarily a bad idea.
"Yes."
Seeing that Tsunade agreed with Feng Ye's decision, the jonin present no longer hesitated. Each of them responded and immediately led their respective squads, splitting up into two groups and heading in different directions.
Tsunade took the lead, running at the front, with Feng Ye closely following. About ten ninjas, led by Kurenai Yuhi, brought up the rear.
Soon, they approached the location of the Ni Valley Bridge.
"There are ninjas!"
As they drew closer, Kurenai, who had been using her perception abilities, had her eyes flash with insight as she alerted the group.
Tsunade turned to Kurenai and asked, "How many?"
"One... two... three..."
Kurenai closed her eyes to focus her senses before opening them again and reporting, "I can sense a total of ten, and there don't seem to be any with particularly strong chakra signatures."
Tsunade looked ahead once more and said, "It seems they really have split into two groups to try and destroy the Ni Valley Bridge and the Ko Valley Bridge simultaneously. Everyone, spread out and divide into two groups to flank them from the sides!"
"Yes!"
Kurenai acknowledged and, along with ten Konoha ninjas, immediately split into two squads of five, moving to surround the enemy from both sides. Meanwhile, Tsunade rushed forward directly.
Feng Ye stayed by Tsunade's side, almost certain that there was something amiss with this Cloud ninja unit, though he couldn't pinpoint if the issue was with this group or the one targeting the Ko Valley Bridge.
In any case, they had to make their move here.
Feng Ye and Tsunade weaved through the trees and landed on a large rock. From this vantage point, they could see a raging river in the distance, with a massive bridge spanning across it.
They spotted several Cloud ninjas positioned at various points on the bridge, drilling into its weak spots and attaching explosive tags, seemingly close to completing their task.
"Someone's here!"
At that moment, the perceptive ninja among the Cloud ninjas paled, his gaze fixing on Tsunade's direction.
Tsunade's eyes narrowed, and a cold light flashed within them. She leaped down from the rock and landed in front of the bridge, driving her fist into the ground.
Boom!!
The earth shattered under Tsunade's punch.
Huge chunks of stone were sent flying, crashing into the nearest Cloud ninja. He wore a look of terror as he dodged clumsily.
Whoosh!
Tsunade stepped forward, closing the distance, and threw a punch at the ninja.
The ninja drew his short sword and held it horizontally to block. But as soon as it made contact, he felt as though he had been hit by a tremendous force. The sword snapped in his hand, and his body bent backward like a shrimp, hurtling sideways like a meteor and slamming into the opposite bank of the river.
Having punched one ninja to death, Tsunade coldly eyed another nearby ninja. However, she suddenly noticed that this ninja didn't show any signs of fear. Instead, a malicious glint appeared in his eyes.
Whoosh!!
Two massive chakra signatures erupted from beneath the river.
As the water exploded, two figures shot out at incredible speed, one to the left and one to the right, closing in on Tsunade in an instant.
"...Scorch Release: Flaming Thunder!"
