Chapter 1148: I Know Your Father
Chapter 1148: I Know Your Father
Yusei was taken aback, looking at Godwin with surprise. He hadn’t expected Godwin to suddenly bring this up.
"Back then, Dr. Fudo developed the Perpetual Motion Machine", Youxuan said slowly. "The key to it was a type of mediator particle called the Yusei Particle.
Dr. Fudo discovered that this particle had very special properties, capable of combining with all other fundamental particles, acting as a mediator between any particles.
Later, he named his son after this particle."
Youxuan gave Yusei a meaningful look.
"Do you understand what he meant by that?"
Yusei’s heart trembled, and he murmured, "Yusei Particle, Yusei."
Yusei was a tech enthusiast who had once built a perpetual motion machine from scrap. He was well-versed in the basic principles of such machines and was certainly aware of the existence of the Yusei Particle. He had even considered the possibility that his name was a coincidence.
However, no one had ever pointed this out to him face-to-face, and he had never dwelled on it too deeply.
But now...
"Yes, I think you should understand", Youxuan said. "Your father’s hope was that you would become someone like the Yusei Particle—someone who can forge connections between people, someone who can help anyone understand each other and become partners. That is what you call 'Bonds.'
With the power of human bonds, you can overcome anything and bring hope."
This was the core theme of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and the primary reason for Yusei’s continuous growth and strength in the story. If put in more mystical terms, "Bonds" were Yusei’s path. The strength of his companions and their trust allowed him to break through barriers time and again, drawing miraculous cards and creating wonders, even transcending the Zone’s understanding and creating a new future that didn’t exist in any known timeline.
This path was Yusei’s essence. By helping him recognize this early, Youxuan believed Yusei could overcome his confusion and evolve more quickly.
"But..." Yusei said, "What if the Perpetual Motion Machine had never existed?"
Jack, who had been quiet, suddenly burst out, grabbing Yusei by the collar. "How much longer are you going to show me this weak side, Yusei!?"
Yusei: "Jack..."
Yusei had recently defeated Jack in the Lucky Cup, taking the title of Duel King. Despite being childhood friends, they were currently in a bit of a disagreement. Jack hadn’t wanted to speak to him, but he couldn’t hold back anymore.
"Listen up, Yusei. Neither I nor anyone else has ever thought that any tragedy in our lives was caused by you or your father.
My life is in my own hands, and every path I’ve taken was forged by my own efforts! If I have a destiny, it’s to surpass you and become the strongest king, and nothing more!
So don’t show me this weak side. Stand tall and proud, like a worthy opponent to me, Jack Atlas! Dwelling on the past is meaningless; our goal is the future, and that’s enough!"
Yusei’s heart trembled, and he was moved. "Jack..."
Despite Jack’s rough demeanor and challenging tone, Yusei knew that this was his way of offering comfort as a friend, and he was deeply touched.
Youxuan added, "The creation of the Perpetual Motion Machine was an inevitable part of human development, Yusei Fudo.
Whether it’s Synchro Summoning or the Perpetual Motion Machine, even if these had not appeared, other technological advancements would have taken their place in the course of human evolution. If humanity cannot face the future with the right mindset, the path ahead will inevitably lead to darkness."
This wasn't just a message for Yusei; Youxuan was also speaking to the hidden Zone and preemptively preparing Yusei, so his resolve wouldn't waver when he encountered Zone and the Taichi Organization in the future.
History has repeatedly shown that destroying the Perpetual Motion Machine doesn't solve the world's problems. As long as the darkness in people's hearts remains, even if the Perpetual Motion Machine is gone, there will always be something else—like the Oreha Justy, the Great Yeshen, and countless other bosses, almost all of whom share a background rooted in the darkness of the human heart. Therefore, Zone's plan to save humanity was probably doomed from the start. Erasing the Perpetual Motion Machine from history wouldn't save the future.
"Dr. Fudo was a great researcher and a beacon of light in human history", Youxuan said. "The Perpetual Motion Machine was his dream, a dream he dedicated his entire life to, hoping to guide humanity toward a future filled with light and hope. Do you really want to deny your father's lifelong dream and the expectations he placed in you?"
Yusei's heart trembled, and his gaze shifted.
After a moment, he smiled gently and nodded. "Thank you, Jack, Godwin. I understand, and I won't be lost anymore."
Indeed, the past is the past. Regardless of the reasons, the Zero Reversal has already occurred. To prevent similar tragedies from happening again, they must now seize control of their future.
Yusei clenched his fist, his gaze becoming resolute once more.
Youxuan could even sense that Yusei's aura as a Duelist seemed to have grown more solid. After the battles in the Lucky Cup and against the Dragon Signers, and then the fierce clash with the Dark Signers, Yusei had already been through many trials. With this change in his mindset, it seemed like he was on the verge of a significant breakthrough.
This was a good sign, indeed.
Youxuan nodded slightly, very pleased.
At this rate, Yusei might advance even faster than in the original story. Perhaps, he might even summon the Cosmic Radiant Dragon, a card that never appeared in the anime but was later released in real-world card form.
In the anime, the Cosmic Radiant Dragon is a card that Yusei would have summoned if Zone had not intervened in the timeline. It would have appeared after Yusei reached the "Supreme Mirror Calm Heart" state, evolving into an ultimate Synchro Monster that had reached the realm of divinity.
In the current anime environment, the presence of the Cosmic Radiant Dragon would be utterly devastating. It's easy to imagine that in the original timeline, before Zone's intervention, Yusei's Radiant Dragon might have been as significant as the Three Phantoms in the hands of the first King, representing the pinnacle of Duel Monsters.
However, due to the Taichi Organization's interference and the alteration of the timeline, the Cosmic Radiant Dragon's existence seems to have been erased from history.
Perhaps, in the future after the anime's conclusion, Yusei might summon the Radiant Dragon, but the story doesn't provide any further details, leaving this a mystery.
Adjusting his thoughts, Yusei turned to Godwin and, after a moment's contemplation, asked, "Godwin, did you know my father?"
He had long suspected that Godwin knew many secrets about the Perpetual Motion Machine from the past, and his tone now suggested a deep understanding of his father.
Youxuan pondered for a moment, recalling his character's background.
Then, he nodded and admitted, "Yes."
"Dr. Fudo... was once my close friend."
Yusei: "!"
