Chapter 114: The Secret Cave of Frostwipe Mountain
Chapter 114: The Secret Cave of Frostwipe Mountain
Unbeknownst to Naoki, the snowfall on Frostwipe Mountain had ceased.
The surrounding temperature dropped a few more degrees, but fortunately, the duration of his [Cold Resistance] ability had not yet expired.
About three hours had passed since he left the ranch, which meant he could stay in this area for a couple more hours.
"That should be enough!" Naoki thought to himself.
Goleradon flew at a leisurely pace in the air.
Although the snow had stopped, the sky remained a blanketed white, devoid of any sunlight.
Occasionally, a few Messenger Pidgey flapped their wings and flew by. Their tails were plump, resembling small parcels.
Naoki's gaze was drawn to those distinctive tails.
As far as he knew, Messenger Pidgey had hollow tails, which they used to store and transport food.
These Pokemon, native to frigid climates, were always busy ferrying food to their young, who awaited them in nests perched atop cliffs.
Compared to Abomasnow, a Pokemon that actively attacked humans, Messenger Pidgey could be considered incredibly kindhearted.
Known for their habit of sharing their food with humans and other Pokemon, they would even go out of their way to offer a portion of their meals to rescue humans stranded in the snowy mountains.
It was said that countless lives were saved each year thanks to the food provided by these compassionate birds.
Messenger Pidgey were not only adorable but also made excellent Pokemon partners for some trainers.
In the special episode, a Messenger Pidgey trained by the masked man, Lyle, had achieved the terrifying feat of defeating a Pangoro.
Just then, Naoki suddenly felt a pair of eyes on him.
He turned around and spotted a Messenger Pidgey flying behind him.
Upon realizing it had been noticed, the bird waved its red wings at him, sped up, and presented him with two Pecha Berries that it had retrieved from its tail.
"Hmm?"
Naoki was taken aback by this gesture.
His brain froze for a second before he realized that his current appearance—covered in snow and clad in thin clothing—had led the Messenger Pidgey to mistake him for a human in distress.
This thought brought a wry smile to his face.
The Messenger Pidgey chirped enthusiastically, not seeking praise, and turned to fly away, ready to continue its food-gathering mission.
"Wait, Messenger Pidgey!" Naoki called out hastily.
"Pidgey?"
The bird paused, confused by the call.
It turned to look at the human and the massive Pokemon beneath him, its expression softening as understanding dawned.
Those two berries wouldn't be enough for them! A Pokemon of that size would need far more to fill its belly.
But today, it had only managed to find five berries...
Now, it had given away two, leaving it with three.
However, finding food in the snowy terrain was no easy task.
The Messenger Pidgey hesitated, then reluctantly took out another berry from its tail.
Seeing this, Naoki shook his head with a smile.
He returned the berry to the bird, saying, "Thank you so much for your kindness, but we don't need them. You keep them for yourself!"
"Pidgey?!"
The bird looked bewildered.
Naoki's gaze fell to the tail it was clutching, and he could see that only two berries remained inside.
This particular Messenger Pidgey was incredibly generous! It had given away most of its berries without hesitation.
Since berries didn't grow in snowy areas, it meant that this bird had flown far and wide to gather them.
Naoki pondered for a moment, then reached into his backpack and took out some of the food he had brought along to lure the Ice Eevee back to the ranch.
He had an assortment of treats, including honey bread, berries, Lucky Eggs, and ham sandwiches.
Due to the abundance of food, Naoki offered a portion of it to the kind Messenger Pidgey, even helping to store the food in its tail.
"Pidgeot?!"
The bird was visibly astonished by the array of food.
Naoki smiled and said, "I have plenty of food, so please take these as a gift."
"Pidgey..."
At that moment, Goleradon below them let out a call, reminding Naoki that they were approaching their destination.
This was a very special cliff, its shape resembling the hand of a Pokemon.
It was for this reason that it was named Frostwipe Hand by the people of the Padia region, and it was one of the "Top Ten Scenic Spots of Padia," a source of great pride for the region.
Goleradon slowly descended onto the cliff, and Naoki jumped off its back, standing at the top of the cliff to observe his surroundings.
Here, he spotted several Abomasnow and a few Frost Rotom.
However, with the presence of the Ice Eevee, their allure to Naoki had diminished.
After looking around, Naoki did not spot the Ice Eevee.
After a moment's thought, he mounted Goleradon again and said, "Let's take a look below!"
"Ah ga si!"
Goleradon cried out and spread its wings, beginning to glide downwards from Frostwipe Hand.
Soon, they landed in the valley below the cliff.
This area was also covered in deep snow, but due to the tall cliffs blocking the wind, the temperature here was not as cold as above.
In this valley grew many tall pine trees and some hardy vegetation that could withstand the cold.
Near those pine trees, Naoki spotted several Sawsbucks in their winter form and a few Fawnedes.
The Fawnedes also noticed him, but the group of Pokemon were docile, so they merely watched from a distance without approaching.
Naoki paid them no mind as he looked up at the cliff above, confirming that this place was directly below Frostwipe Hand. He then began to search the surrounding area.
Soon, he discovered a cave behind an inconspicuous snowdrift.
Naoki's eyes lit up as he thought, "This must be the cave where A Meng found the Ice Eevee!"
He took a step towards the cave, intending to run in, but then he recalled the image of A Meng rushing into the cave and being chased by the Frost Cavern Bear. He hesitated and stopped at the entrance, peering inside.
This cave seemed quite large, and he couldn't see the end from the entrance. There also appeared to be some forks and turns within.
"Goleradon, do you sense any powerful Pokemon nearby?" Naoki asked.
At his words, Goleradon sniffed carefully before shaking its head. "Ah ga si."
None? Does that mean the Pokemon that lives here is not at home?
It had been snowing until just now, so perhaps the Pokemon had gone out to find food.
"Let's take a look inside anyway!"
Naoki began to venture further into the cave.
This cave was indeed massive, and one wouldn't realize its true size from the outside. But upon entering, one could sense its depth.
The cave was intricate, and it didn't take long before they reached a junction.
Naoki stood at the junction, deep in thought.
Which way should he go?
He arbitrarily chose a path and continued on, the cave eerily silent except for the sound of their breathing.
If one listened carefully, they could even hear the faint sound of dripping water.
Just then, Goleradon seemed to have noticed something as it looked towards a fork in the path that led downwards.
"Ah ga si?"
Naoki paused, slightly taken aback. "What is it? Did you sense something?"
Goleradon nodded its large head and took the lead, heading towards the downward path.
After walking for about ten minutes and passing through a narrow, dimly lit passage, the space ahead suddenly opened up.
This seemed to be a hidden underground cave.
Icicle-like stalactites hung from the ceiling, and in the distance was a deep blue lake emitting a chilling white mist.
In the center of the lake was an island, upon which stood a crystal-blue block of ice.
Goleradon's gaze fell upon that icy rock.
It sensed a powerful Ice-type energy emanating from it!
Naoki also looked in that direction.
Hmm? What is that?
He mounted Goleradon, and with a leap, they landed on the island in the lake.
Just as Naoki prepared to observe the rock up close, a cold, piercing cry sounded from behind him.
"Bu'yi!"
