Chapter 114: Black and White Ghost Domain (Part 2)
Chapter 114: Black and White Ghost Domain (Part 2)
“This place is completely bare,” Feng Bu Jue muttered, stepping into the longhouse.
The weathered wooden structure creaked under the storm’s assault. Cracks webbed the walls, some hastily patched with cement, their fresh gray streaks standing out against the decay. A single meter-wide barred window loomed above a chest-high cabinet, its wooden slats rattling in the wind. A scrap of cloth hung from a beam above it—the closest thing to a curtain. Rain lashed through the gaps, spattering onto the warped floorboards.
The space divided into two rooms. A doorframe without a door marked the boundary. The front room, roughly ten square meters, housed a circular low table surrounded by three tatami mats. A single bulb dangled from the ceiling, its feeble glow illuminating the cramped area.
Feng Bu Jue peeked into the rear room. Narrower still, a mattress occupied half the space, with a wardrobe squeezed beside the doorframe. No light, no furniture—just shadows. Whoever lived here had to stumble through the dark from the common room to their bed.
“Not exactly five-star luxury,” Feng Bu Jue grumbled, shutting the door. “No running water—communal toilets out back, I bet.” They’d noticed a booth-like structure in the courtyard earlier, likely the bathroom.
【Current task completed. Main quest updated.】
The system alert chimed as Feng Bu Jue plopped onto the floor. They opened the menu: the “Return Home” task showed as completed, replaced by: 【Stay in the house until dawn】.
“Seriously?” Feng Bu Jue scowled. “All night? In this dump?”
Outside, thunder growled. Wind howled through the barred window, flapping the curtain. Shadows flickered beyond it—swaying branches or something else?
The house had electricity, barely. The lone bulb hummed overhead. No radio, no television—just the storm’s symphony. Feng Bu Jue exhaled, steam rising from their soaked clothes.
“I thought ‘Nightmare Difficulty’ meant tougher fights,” they muttered, pulling open the cabinet. Inside sat a thermos, a teapot, and two cups on a round wooden tray. The thermos was full. They set the gear on the table, then found a small tin labeled only with the character for “tea.”
“Temporary housing after a disaster?” Feng Bu Jue snorted, rinsing the teapot with thermos water. “No tap water, no bathroom, no utensils… Even if you had a meal, you couldn’t wash a dish.” They poured out the rinse water, added tea leaves, and steeped a mystery brew.
Their wet clothes clung to them—no changing allowed in the scenario. They wrung out the fabric as best they could, resigning to air-dry.
The tea warmed their hands. Feng Bu Jue eyed the window. “Reduced clues, instant-death triggers… That’s Nightmare’s style. One wrong word, and Hanako Okiku erases you. That pole monster too.”
They sipped tea. “Freedom’s an illusion here. Step off the main quest, and some random flag kills you. You need spirit arts sharp enough to fight back… or this domain eats you alive.”
A sudden groan pierced the silence.
“Oh—”
“Woooh—eh—”
Crone-like wails seeped through the walls—the neighbor’s room.
Feng Bu Jue rolled their eyes. “Raining cats and dogs, and they’re holding a séance?” They shouted toward the wall, “Hey! You alright in there?”
Silence.
They crawled to the wall, pressing an ear to the wood. A door creaked. Footsteps shuffled—someone stepping outside.
Feng Bu Jue crept to their own door, pipe wrench in hand. Rain battered the window. No knock came.
Curious, they eased the door open, peering into the storm.
