Chapter 113: Hang Him Up for Me!
Chapter 113: Hang Him Up for Me!
The group was quite large, numbering around fifty or sixty people. Their leader had silver hair, wore fur, and carried a wide blade on his back. A smiling face logo with a horizontal line through it adorned his chest and waist belt.
That logo seemed vaguely familiar to Sarge, but he couldn't quite place it.
"Can anyone get in here?" Sarge clicked his tongue. "Where's Ajin?"
"I think he went shopping. We need to restock our supplies too." Renee held up her hand and explained.
"Sarge, something's not right. This guy is..." One of the men in the crowd, with diamond-shaped glasses and blond hair, narrowed his eyes and broke into a cold sweat.
The man with silver hair, whose name was Sachs, turned pale. Needless to say, he had recognized the logo too.
Recently, a man had been making waves on the high seas, attracting attention with an extremely high bounty and equally insane antics—a true disaster!
"W-wrong person!" Sachs stuttered. "S-sorry, we'll just be on our way now."
They could put up a fight for a bounty of a few thousand, and even for one over a hundred million, they could bluff their way out.
But this... This was beyond their imagination.
"Lily," Sarge called out as he watched them turn to leave.
Zhing!
A thunderous glint of cold light flashed among the crowd, like scattered sparks of electricity, striking each person. As the sparks vanished, Lily reappeared by Sarge's side.
Sheathing her half-drawn sword, she revealed only a glimpse of its blade.
Ka!
Chi!
In an instant, the crowd's bodies erupted in a spray of blood, soaking the ground as they all fell.
"Leti, go get another fishing rod."
Sarge kicked away the broken halves of the fishing rod that had fallen to the ground. He walked up to the silver-haired man, grabbed him by his fur collar, and hoisted him up.
"Let's try a different way of chumming. I want to see what we can reel in."
"OK!"
Renee nodded and ran off to get a fishing rod from a nearby building.
As for the rest of the fallen men, Sarge didn't bother with them. He simply wrapped his fishing line around this man and tossed him into the sea.
Whether the line would break or not wasn't important. In the face of Sarge's Haki, the fishing line and rod were more than up to the task. The man, now conscious, thrashed about in the water but couldn't break free.
"You can't gurgle!"
"I am... gurgle!"
"Don't... gurgle!"
Sachs's head bobbed up and down in the seawater, and his words were garbled by the water pouring into his mouth. Finally, he surged up like a maggot and briefly poked his head out of the water, shouting, "I am Doflamingo's subordinate!"
For a moment, the fishing line that held him went slack, then snapped taut again, pulling him back under the waves.
"Who cares!" Sarge grit his teeth. "A subordinate of a Yonko still has to play by the rules here!"
Doflamingo?
Of course, he knew that name.
Everyone had heard of the powerful warlords of the sea, the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
While his other memories were fuzzy, the constant talk about these famous figures on the high seas had left a deep impression, and he remembered them well.
But what did that have to do with him?
At worst, they'd just have to fight it out!
After drowning Sachs for about half an hour, Sarge finally gave up on using him as bait.
"The bloody smell should attract sea kings, or at least sharks. How come not a single one has taken the bait? Is this guy that disgusting? Is he so rotten that nothing wants to eat him?" Sarge mused as he hauled Sachs back up. With a swift kick, he sent Sachs flying to the side and prepared to grab another person to try again.
Just then, Ajin walked in.
Seeing the people lying on the ground, he paused momentarily before bowing his head in apology. "My apologies, Captain Sarge. I failed to stop these scumbags from intruding. It's my fault."
As the chief of combat, it was Ajin's responsibility to guard Sarge's residence and keep intruders at bay.
"Indeed, it is your fault. There wasn't a single guard, and they were able to break in. Next time we rob someone, I'll deduct it from your share of the spoils." Sarge waved his hand dismissively and then turned his attention to the object Ajin was carrying. "What's that?"
In Ajin's hand was a person, albeit one in a pitiful state. His face was caved in, as if it had been smashed with a hammer.
"His name is Bellamy, and he's a pirate with a bounty of five hundred and fifty million berries." Ajin lifted the man up. "This guy broke into Roseweo's recruitment hall and injured a lot of people. He's a Devil Fruit user. By the time I got there, Roseweo was already badly injured, so I brought this guy here."
Bellamy, a user of the Spring-Spring Fruit, had destroyed most of the nearby buildings with his ability. He was bouncing around like a cannonball, causing chaos and injuring many of those who had come for the recruitment.
But when he encountered Ajin, he was swiftly knocked out with a single hammer blow.
"Spring?" Renee tilted her head, curious. "He uses his bouncing ability to fight? That kind of power is useless if his body isn't tough enough. It'd be too easy to break through his defenses."
Any attack, no matter how fast, would cause significant damage to an opponent, but it also left one vulnerable to counterattacks.
"Hang them all at the entrance."
Sarge had lost interest. "Don't let these stray cats and dogs barge in again. If they do, Ajin, you'll take the punishment."
"Yes, Captain!"
Ajin's face turned solemn. "It will never happen again!"
Like a stack of mahjong tiles, Ajin swiftly stacked the fallen pirates on his shoulders and carried them out to hang them at the entrance.
This was indeed his dereliction of duty. He always thought that everyone would come down for the party, and no such garbage would dare to provoke them, but today it happened.
While the garbage was negligible, it was clear that they had disrupted Captain Sarge's mood.
"Damn it!"
Ajin took the lead and hung Bellamy on the wall. He clenched his fists, "To be so negligent in my duty! I was too careless!"
"Captain, what do you mean by 'negligent'?"
At that moment, Paru walked in carrying several bags. Seeing the people lying on the ground, he asked, "So many people? Are they enemies?"
"Paru!"
Ajin glared at him and said, "You were supposed to station people here. Wasn't that your responsibility as the chief of combat?"
He had indeed considered that aspect, but as the chief of combat, the outcome was that intruders had broken in. Regardless, he would have to bear the blame.
Paru was startled by his stern gaze, "The, the Captain said that everyone is free to move around."
"There are always people taking turns to guard the ship. As the Captain's residence, how could there be not a single guard? In the event of such garbage intruding, would it require the big shots or the Captain himself to take action? This is too negligent!"
Ajin scolded, "All the crew members who were supposed to be on duty outside will have their shares reduced by half! And as for you, your share will also be deducted as punishment!"
"Yes, yes," Paru lowered his head, feeling a little aggrieved.
"Come and help me hang these people. Captain Sarge wants them all hung at the entrance," Ajin continued.
"Understood."
Paru put down his bags, kicked one of the pirates viciously, lifted him into the air, and proceeded to tie him up with a rope before hanging him on the wall.
It was all because of these good-for-nothings that he ended up being reprimanded and penalized.
How infuriating!
...
Although they had suffered some damage due to that Bellamy fellow, they still managed to recruit people successfully. In total, there were eight pirate crews, amounting to over five hundred people, including thirty female pirates, which added quite a number of females to the Tianzai Pirate Crew.
That evening, the pirate captains who had their wounds dressed, led their crews, and gathered at the Tropical Hotel. The entire square had been transformed into a banquet hall for them to congregate.
The square was filled with tables, and even the first-floor restaurant was packed with people. Each one of them stood upright, their eyes gleaming with fanaticism as they looked at the center where Sarge stood, cloaked in a black fur-lined red cape.
Although they had been beaten by Bellamy, they witnessed what happened to him and his pirate crew—they were all hung outside!
Undoubtedly, the Tianzai Pirate Crew was in a league of its own!
"Drink this cup of wine, and you will officially join my pirate crew."
Sarge raised his jewel-encrusted wine cup, toasted to the sky, and burst into laughter, "I welcome any capable individual to serve under me. I will not mistreat you! Now, let's liven up the party, hahaha!"
"Ohh!"
Whether they were new recruits or old crew members, they all raised their wine cups and drank the entire cupful.
With such a large recruitment, the ship was almost at full capacity, and Sarge was naturally delighted.
Moreover, they had filled in the essential positions unique to pirate ships.
For sailing the high seas, a few key positions were crucial: navigator, cook, and ship doctor.
Even gunners didn't matter as much; they just needed to be able to fire the cannons. Whether they could hit the target or not, that was another story, and in the end, it often boiled down to close-quarters combat.
Sarge's ship was not short of gunners.
However, ship doctors were hard to come by. The Tianzai Pirate Crew had a unique composition, with most of its members being former slaves. Before they became slaves, they were combatants, and none of them had such skills.
These recruits, on the other hand, came as intact pirate crews, each having at least one ship doctor.
This time, Sarge had recruited ten ship doctors, enough to form a medical team. As for the proficiency of their medical skills, it was better than nothing.
After all, these ship doctors were not meant to treat Sarge himself. They would mostly be treating ordinary crew members, and for minor injuries, Sarge could handle them himself.
There were also twelve navigators who joined Lily's navigation team. Previously, she had been making do with temporary navigators, only able to determine the direction. Now, with these additional navigators, her workload would be significantly reduced.
There were also some cooks who joined Maryka's culinary team. As for those average cooks who wanted to stay as cooks, they could do so, and those who didn't want to be cooks would be assigned to the combatant role.
After all, these cooks used to be combatants.
With the crew positions filled, they could set sail without any worries.
