Chapter 111: The Scent of Grandine
Chapter 111: The Scent of Grandine
"When we were still in Shirowell, we heard that a dragon had appeared in Magnolia."
"After we arrived here, we also heard about a beast rampage in the forest, and someone saw a dragon among them."
"Then, after investigating, we found out that the person who resolved the beast rampage was named Rod, and he also destroyed the entire forest. He’s quite a reckless guy."
Shalulu looked at Rod, "So, apart from 'Fire Dragon,' you might be the only one who knows about the dragon."
"Oh~~~ That’s impressive, destroying the entire forest!" Natsu clenched his fists excitedly, "Rod, you’ve become so strong? Want to have a serious fight? And didn’t you say you’ve never seen a dragon?"
"First, I’ve never seen a dragon, and second, I didn’t destroy the entire forest—Natsu, you were there a few days ago, and you occasionally need to use your brain, idiot!"
Rod clarified the rumors and continued, "The beast rampage is probably true. If you watched the Magic Parade yesterday, you might have some impression of my magic?"
"That cheap text magic doesn’t seem like a primary magic to use." Shalulu thought back to the giant crab she had seen, "So, it’s the magic to create and control monsters?"
"Shalulu~" Wendy felt that Shalulu was being a bit too harsh.
Rod couldn’t get angry because she was right: "To be precise, it’s the magic to summon various monsters."
As he spoke, he summoned Worm.
Wendy was captivated by Worm’s appearance: "So cute!"
Worm looked around, then ran up to Shalulu and rubbed his head against her.
Shalulu made a face of disgust but didn’t push him away.
In the corner, Happy looked as if he had been struck by lightning: "Worm, I challenge you to a duel!"
"Ruru?" Worm ran over and rubbed against Happy.
Happy held up a fish as a weapon, but he couldn’t bring himself to strike.
"At the time, I encountered danger in the forest, and I might have summoned a bunch of monsters due to a loss of control over my magic."
"The forest was indeed damaged, but not as much as the rumors suggest. As for the dragon..."
Rod was uncertain, "There might have been a dragon, but it’s likely not the one you’re looking for."
Natsu tilted his head in thought and said confidently, "Igneel isn’t the type to follow orders from just anyone."
"Grandine, Grandine likes humans..." Wendy wanted to see what kind of dragon Rod could summon, but she couldn’t bring herself to ask.
But she had Shalulu: "Can you..."
"Rod, show us your dragon!" Natsu interrupted, waving his fists.
Natsu’s considerate nature often expresses itself in strange ways.
Rod squinted, "You just want to see it, right?"
Natsu was excited, "Of course, I want it to fight me! Wendy and I are Dragon Slayers; how can we call ourselves Dragon Slayers without fighting a dragon?"
Wendy was startled, "Eh~ A fight?"
Shalulu was displeased, "Hey, you scared Wendy!"
"Sorry, if I could, I’d like to see what my dragon looks like too," Rod said helplessly, "But last time was an accident, and I can’t do it now."
Natsu slapped the table and put his foot on the chair, "Don’t say you can’t just like that. We’re mages of Fairy Tail, summon the dragon quickly!"
"It’s not possible."
"Use more willpower!"
"Try using willpower and see if it works!"
"Fine, I’ll do it! Lend me the necklace!"
"No way!"
"Cheapskate!"
Natsu crossed his arms and pouted like a child, sulking.
Rod wanted to slap himself for being dragged into an argument with this idiot.
Wendy looked a bit at a loss.
Charle patted her forehead, confirming that it was indeed an idiot and his friend.
Mira watched them bicker with a smile, thinking that if Rod spent more time with Natsu, he would become even more interesting.
Rod turned to Wendy and tried to speak as gently as possible. "I'm sorry, but that's all the information we have about dragons. As for summoning dragons, I'll need to get stronger first. I promise I'll let you know when I can."
"Thank you," Charle, the tsundere cat, could sense their sincerity. "Let's go back, Wendy."
"Charle, are you leaving?" Happy chimed in. "Why not stay at Fairy Tail?"
Charle rolled her eyes. "We have our own guild. Why would we stay here?"
Poor Happy. Rod thought for a moment and decided to help him a little. "It's almost noon. Why don't you stay for lunch? Two Dragon Slayers together could benefit from more interaction. You might learn something."
Happy's eyes lit up. Rod was a good guy, and he'd help him prank Natsu next time.
Mira chimed in, "That's right. It's rare to have mages from other guilds visit. Let us treat you to Fairy Tail's special cuisine. It's delicious, I promise."
Wendy looked tempted. "Charle~"
Charle flicked her tail. "Whatever you want."
Wendy beamed. "Thank you for your hospitality!"
Happy was even more excited. "Thanks for the meal!"
Mira patted Happy's head. "Don't mention it."
"Love!"
...
Rod was curious about Wendy. "Fire Dragon Slayer can eat fire. What about Sky Dragon Slayer? What do you eat?"
Wendy replied, "Air."
Natsu asked, "Is it good?"
Wendy hesitated. "It's... hard to describe."
Natsu was intrigued. "Why don't you try a bit?"
Charle couldn't stand it. "Do you usually show people how you eat fire?"
Natsu turned to Rod. "Rod?"
"Three-dimensional Words: FIRE."
"Slurp~" Natsu sucked in the burning words and wiped his mouth. "How was that?"
Charle sighed, finding Natsu to be quite troublesome.
"It's okay, Charle." Wendy opened her mouth and 'chomped' a few times on the air, chewing and swallowing.
It was a bit cute, but there didn't seem to be anything special about it.
Anyone could do that, but Wendy made it look like she was really eating something.
"Ugh..." Wendy suddenly widened her eyes, tears welling up.
"Is something wrong, Wendy?" Charle asked, worried. "Is the air here not clean?"
"Grandeeney!" Wendy's voice quivered. "I smell Grandeeney's scent!"
"What?"
Everyone stood up, and Natsu ran outside, sniffing the air and looking around.
Rod tried to stay calm. "Wendy, are you sure?"
"Yes! It's very faint, but it's definitely Grandeeney's scent."
A little useless trivia:
Actually, the original term for Dragon Slayer is "dragon slayer" (doragon suraia), which should be translated as "dragon hunter" or "dragon killer." However, the magic is called "Dragon Slayer Magic," which is quite interesting.
