Chapter 111: Rise to Fame (25)
Chapter 111: Rise to Fame (25)
"Lord Third Hokage."
"Hokage-sama."
As Sarutobi Hiruzen arrived, Team C had just finished their draw, and the students greeted him one by one.
"Everyone, just carry on as usual. I'm just here to observe," Sarutobi said with a benevolent smile.
"Contestant number one, Anko Mitarashi, and contestant number two, Asakawa Sanken, prepare to begin your battle," Mokuyotsu's shadow clone announced, hosting the test.
The students called out by Mokuyotsu quickly made their way to the combat area, striking a pose to signal their readiness for the fight.
Sarutobi glanced around; to avoid any disturbances, the testing sites for the three teams were spaced at a considerable distance from one another.
"You've worked hard these past five weeks, Mokuyotsu, managing over three hundred students by yourself," Sarutobi remarked.
In this situation, one person was truly not enough; using shadow clones was necessary.
Indeed, Mokuyotsu's original body was by Sarutobi's side, while his shadow clone was off hosting the exams.
"It's my duty," Mokuyotsu replied with a smile, keeping his response brief.
The Third Hokage nodded with a smile and turned his attention to the battle that had already commenced.
Even though her opponent, Asakawa Sanken, was a fourth-year student, and she was at a height disadvantage, Anko showed no fear and immediately charged into close-quarters combat with him.
Anko's taijutsu was extremely aggressive; it was the kind that said, "I may get hurt, but you'll definitely be hurt more."
Sensing the many onlooking gazes, Asakawa silently grimaced. He was struggling to withstand Anko's frenzied offense.
Using Anko's punch to his advantage, Asakawa retreated to a tree, then swiftly climbed up and began throwing shuriken at Anko in an attempt to kite her.
However, Anko was not one to be shaken off easily. Having already mastered tree-climbing training, she was practiced in utilizing the forest for combat and quickly caught up with Asakawa, engaging in a battle of wits and bravery in the trees.
Both combatants employed the three basic ninjutsu: the Clone Technique, Transformation Technique, and Body Replacement Technique.
"Mokuyotsu, isn't this Anko Mitarashi from your class?" Sarutobi suddenly asked.
Due to Mokuyotsu's class performing exceptionally well, he had a vague impression of the top students in the class.
"Yes, she's a student in Class 1-1," Mokuyotsu nodded.
"To have such chakra control and ninjutsu proficiency in the first grade is truly impressive. She's an excellent student," Sarutobi stroked his small beard and nodded in approval.
He was very satisfied with Mokuyotsu's teaching results, and the strength displayed by the students, especially considering this was the lowest-performing Team C.
"Indeed, with this level of skill, I believe even average third and fourth-grade students would struggle to match her," a jonin instructor who had accompanied Sarutobi agreed.
"Her opponent is no slouch either. With a little more practice, he should be able to reach the graduation level," Sarutobi continued.
The other jonin instructors nodded in agreement.
Among them was Asakawa's teacher, his face filled with surprise. He had never expected his ordinary student to make such remarkable progress in just five weeks of special training.
Was it because Asakawa hadn't been serious before, or had these five weeks been particularly grueling? Or perhaps Mokuyotsu was just an incredibly skilled teacher? The instructor couldn't pinpoint the reason just yet.
"Anko Mitarashi wins."
In the end, Asakawa was narrowly defeated, and Anko emerged victorious.
"Contestant number three, Ko Tetsuo, and contestant number four, Nakamori Goichi, prepare to begin your battle," Mokuyotsu swiftly announced the names of the next pair of combatants.
"Nakamori Goichi is my student," said Iruka Umino
"Oh? How does he usually perform in practical battles?" Sarutobi inquired curiously.
Upon hearing the score of fifteen, Hiruzen Sarutobi immediately understood the caliber of Goichi Nakamori. According to the Ninja Academy's grading standards, this was considered a very ordinary score.
"Not necessarily," Aya Ueda interjected before Mu Yue could introduce her student. "Ko Tetsuo is also from Teacher Mu Yue's class, and he excels in practical battles."
As the onlookers below began discussing the match, the battle commenced.
Goichi, taking advantage of his physical stature, swiftly closed the distance and launched a fierce barrage of attacks.
Although Ko was at a disadvantage in terms of strength, his smaller size granted him agility. He nimbly dodged Goichi's onslaught.
For a moment, the battle remained evenly matched.
"Unless something unexpected happens, it looks like Goichi Nakamori will win," speculated one of the Jonin instructors.
Despite Goichi not appearing overwhelmed on the surface, he was actually at a significant disadvantage. Being younger, he lacked endurance, and if the battle dragged on, he would eventually be overwhelmed.
"This student is impressive as well," commented the Third Hokage, puffing on his small smoking pipe. "Although not as remarkable as his classmate, he's still quite talented."
After all, engaging in a cross-grade battle and performing this well was commendable in the Third's eyes.
"Genjutsu: Confusion Technique!"
Seizing a brief moment to catch his breath, Ko unleashed his most powerful ninjutsu.
To enhance his illusion, Ko had specially visited a women's clothing store.
Suddenly, six different stylishly dressed, attractive older sisters appeared on the field, encircling Goichi.
"Hmm?" Goichi's gaze was drawn by this mysterious phenomenon.
Seizing the opportunity, Ko kicked Goichi to the ground and pressed a kunai against his body.
"Ko Tetsuo wins!"
Snapping out of his daze, Goichi was left bewildered and shocked.
He knew of Ko's genjutsu, but he never expected him to dare to use it in this situation, right under the gaze of the Third Hokage!
Silence.
The entire arena fell quiet, not a sound escaping from anyone.
Students and teachers alike wore expressions of astonishment, their eyes glued to the scene before them.
"Ahem."
The silence was eventually broken by the Third Hokage's cough.
Hiruzen, who had been engrossed in the battle, was startled by the smoke from his pipe, and he swiftly wiped away a trace of red from beneath his nose. Then, with a serious expression, he commented, "Teacher Mu Yue's special training program has been quite effective. Ko Tetsuo skillfully utilized his strengths, and Goichi Nakamori's performance was also commendable. What scores do you think they deserve for this practical battle?"
"Twenty-four," one of the Jonin instructors answered first.
The other instructors followed suit, their scores differing only slightly.
None of the teachers brought up Ko's genjutsu, and they all tacitly ignored what had just transpired, instead praising Teacher Mu Yue's excellent summer training program and the students' remarkable progress.
Occasionally, they would sneak glances in Ko's direction, their hearts acknowledging the talent he possessed.
"Tetsuo, you're truly going to become famous now," Izumo Kamizuki said with a mix of admiration and envy as he looked at the victorious Ko.
He longed to be in Ko's position, skillfully employing his ninjutsu to defeat a stronger opponent under the watchful eye of the Third Hokage.
"Number five, Yoshikazu Ishii, and number six, Izumo Kamizuki, prepare."
Hearing his name, Izumo eagerly stepped forward. He, too, would make a name for himself!
