Chapter 110: Breaking the Spell
Chapter 110: Breaking the Spell
Wu Dagold frowned and said, "When the incident happened yesterday, we were in the ancestral hall for a ceremony. Suddenly, that thing appeared, and the people inside the hall seemed to be possessed, bowing down to it. No matter how we tried to stop them, they wouldn't listen, and more and all the townspeople were being affected."
"I realized something was wrong and immediately went out to evacuate the townspeople, but we were too slow. There are thousands of people in this town, and now over three to four hundred of them have been influenced."
"I wanted to rush back in and destroy that thing, but we lost another dozen brothers. We had no choice but to retreat."
Although he only had about twenty security team members left, it wouldn't be difficult to organize and bring out a hundred or more townspeople. But that flying skull was extremely tricky; getting close to it would easily drive people insane, causing them to bow down to it. Some even blocked the way with crazed, bloodshot eyes.
Those affected townspeople were their own kin; how could they bear to hurt them, even with weapons in hand? They had no choice but to retreat in disarray.
After the commission agency arrived, someone suggested bringing in a few fire trucks to disperse the villagers with water, but Wu Dagold firmly disagreed. "It's too cold; the water will freeze them, especially the elderly and children in the ancestral hall. We can't risk that."
Some members of the commission agency didn't believe in superstitions and tried to rush in a few times without harming anyone, but they all failed. One agent even knelt down and bowed to the flying skulls like the possessed townspeople. This shocked everyone; without a way to deal with the flying skulls, no one dared to rush in recklessly.
A leader from the commission agency stepped forward and asked Chen Chuan, "Chen Chuan, I heard that if we get rid of the flying skull, everyone will regain their sanity, is that true?"
Wu Dagold looked on expectantly.
Chen Chuan replied, "That's true, but if we get close, the affected townspeople nearby will surely attack us. We'll have to clash with them if we want to approach from the outside."
The leader's expression fell; if that was the case, they could only rely on Chen Chuan at the last moment or a critical juncture. They had to find their own way to break through.
Just then, everyone heard a sound like a bird or a child crying.
Chen Chuan looked up and saw a black dot in the distance, flying like a bird. But he could see clearly that it wasn't a bird; it was a human head! The head's ears flapped like bird wings, and its expression was ambiguous. It circled above a building and then returned.
Wu Dagold's face turned grim. "Chen Chuan, that's the ancestral hall. That thing comes out to fly around every hour."
Chen Chuan's expression became pensive.
An impatient member of the commission agency spoke up, "Captain Wu, we sympathize with Noon Town's plight, but we were entrusted to solve this problem. We can't just stand by and do nothing. You want us to avoid hurting anyone, but it's difficult to achieve that."
"You should know that if we fail, the government hall might directly deploy the patrol squad next time. They're all armed and known for their brutality, unlike us who prefer negotiation."
Wu Dagold hesitated, knowing these words were true. The patrol bureau would only follow orders from above, and they might not show mercy to the irrational townspeople to resolve the issue quickly.
Chen Chuan spoke up, "Actually, there's no need for us to go in." Everyone turned to look at him.
He continued, "The flying skull keeps coming out because it's looking for sacrificial offerings. The townspeople are just influenced by it and have lost their minds. Without someone to guide them, they don't know how to set up an altar. So, if we set up a simple sacrificial site outside and offer sacrifices, it will come to us."
Wu Dagold's eyes lit up, and he said excitedly, "Chen Chuan, will it work?"
Chen Chuan nodded at him and then addressed the members of the commission agencies behind him. "When the flying skull is attacked, the irrational townspeople might come out to stop us. That's where I'll need your help."
Upon hearing this, the members of the commission agencies assured him, "Don't worry, Chen Chuan, we'll take care of this."
Chen Chuan knew that when the flying skull appeared, the townspeople wouldn't run around randomly, and even if they did, they wouldn't be faster than him. By the time they alerted anyone, he might have already dealt with the situation.
However, this would make the other commission agents seem useless, which could lower their evaluation. By suggesting this plan, Chen Chuan ensured that his evaluation would remain positive, regardless of the outcome.
He wasn't just giving face to the commission agents; there were many of them, and they had considerable strength. Twenty security team members couldn't stop them if they decided to charge in without regard for the unarmed townspeople. Chen Chuan was willing to help because he understood their hesitation to harm the townspeople.
He said to Wu Dagold, "Captain Wu, I need you to do something and gather some items."
"Chen Chuan, just tell me what you need, and I'll get it for you!" Wu Dagold quickly agreed.
Chen Chuan said, "First, disperse the onlookers who might be affected when the flying skull appears."
A member of the commission agency added, "We brought restraining ropes this time, which should help."
"That's great!" Wu Dagold exclaimed. He pulled a town security team member aside and instructed him to gather people for assistance. Then he turned to Chen Chuan and asked, "Chen Chuan, what else do you need?"
Chen Chuan listed the items he required, and Wu Dagold immediately directed the townspeople and team members to gather them. Soon, all the requested items were collected.
As instructed, the group disassembled the bricks and arranged them into a makeshift altar, also bringing a sheep and knocking it unconscious, placing it on top.
However, while offering the sacrifice, someone had to step forward and bow, completing the ritual.
Two town security members, chosen by Chen Chuan, approached with trepidation. One of them spoke up, "Don't worry, even if you lose your senses, we'll take care of the flying head, and you'll recover quickly."
Wu Dagold noticed their hesitation and kicked one of them, then whipped them with his belt several times. "What are you staring at? Are you trying to embarrass us? Get up there!"
The two members, forced by his actions, reluctantly moved forward and knelt down.
Wu Dagold, following Chen Chuan's instructions, personally approached the sheep and slit its throat with a long sword. Instantly, a spurt of blood sprayed out, pooling in the earthen bowl below, filling the air with a thick, nauseating stench.
Wu Dagold shouted at the two stunned security members, "What are you staring at? Bow! Bow!"
The two, as if waking from a dream, hurriedly bowed repeatedly towards the altar.
The onlookers also quickly dispersed, each person tense and solemn, waiting anxiously. But after a while, nothing happened.
Just as everyone began to doubt the ritual's effectiveness, Chen Chuan suddenly noticed a dematerialization phenomenon on the second person. He pointed and said, "There!"
Everyone looked up, only to be startled by the sight of a flying head hovering above them, seemingly unnoticed until now.
Chen Chuan realized this head was different from the one he had seen earlier, indicating they were not the same.
This unexpected development surprised him; there were two of them?
Without hesitation, he dismissed the thought. Whether or not this flying head was related to the town's, the townspeople were clearly unaffected by it. The priority was to deal with the town's flying head first.
Chen Chuan reached into his pocket, and with a flick of his wrist, several stones flew out, hitting the flying head. Startled, it let out an unpleasant screech and flew away.
"Chen Chuan, this..." Wu Dagold was perplexed.
"There are two flying heads. We can only handle one at a time. Send a few people to drive this one away, but don't get too close, or you might be affected," Chen Chuan explained.
A member of the commission agency immediately responded, "Leave it to us, Chen Chuan." He led a team with prepared tools to deal with the flying head.
Soon after they drove away the first flying head, an unpleasant screech echoed, and a black dot emerged from the town, heading towards them.
"Step back, everyone, step back!" Chen Chuan commanded.
The crowd hastily retreated, leaving only Chen Chuan at the forefront.
The flying head descended directly onto the altar, circling twice before coming into close range. Everyone could see the head's face, like withered skin tightly stretched over the skull, wrinkled, yet expressing satisfaction and thirst. It eagerly plunged into the pool of blood, submerging itself.
At this moment, except for the two still bowing members, some of the closer security members suddenly started convulsing, quickly restrained by the commission agency members. Further away, those standing behind the barricade ropes and watching the spectacle began to vomit, and soon, only a few could remain standing.)
Chen Chuan glanced at the second person, now exhibiting clear signs of dematerialization. Taking a deep breath, he planted the Snow Lady Sword into the ground, gripping the blade as he stepped forward, slowly drawing the sword out.
His initial steps were slow, but the flying head, unaware, continued chewing on the sheep. As Chen Chuan drew closer, it seemed to sense something, lifting its head to look around.
Chen Chuan, closely observing its movements, decided to act despite not being at the ideal distance for a sword strike. In a swift motion, he crossed the seven-meter distance, and a flash of light streaked by!
A piercing screech filled the air as the flying head, despite dodging, had a small piece of its flesh, along with half an ear, torn off and flying away. However, this didn't seem to affect its flight, and the remaining part continued upward, almost escaping the range of the sword. Those watching behind grew anxious.
Chen Chuan, his expression calm, drew the Wu Ji Handgun from his waist and fired seven shots rapidly at the flying head, creating bloody holes on its surface.
The flying head twitched a few times before falling straight down, landing with a loud crash. At that moment, the dematerialization on the second person deepened, as if some intense force was acting upon him.
Unfazed, Chen Chuan holstered his gun and approached calmly. With a stomp of his foot, the head was crushed under his weight. He turned around, his expression serene, and addressed the stunned crowd, "Captain Wu."
"Yes, yes!" Wu Dagold snapped out of his daze and rushed forward, his eyes filled with excitement and tension.
In a composed tone, Chen Chuan said, "Captain Wu, please prepare another altar. Let's see if we can attract the other flying head and eliminate it too, now that we've encountered it."
