Chapter 110: Battle with the Basilisk
Chapter 110: Battle with the Basilisk
In the Chamber of Secrets of Slytherin, green light filtered down from the crystals in the ceiling. In front of Slytherin's statue, a figure of average height stood, surrounded by over a dozen strange, man-sized machines. The Chamber of Secrets was eerily quiet, with only the occasional drip of water and the sound of gears turning.
After all the preparations were complete, Liam took a few deep breaths to steady himself. Then, he spoke the self-aggrandizing password in Parseltongue.
"Speak to me, Slytherin—greatest of the four founders of Hogwarts."
As soon as the words left his lips, the massive stone face of Slytherin began to move. Its mouth grew larger and larger, eventually becoming a huge black hole. From within the black hole came a rustling sound, as if something were about to crawl out.
Liam cast a Levitation Charm on himself and tightened the Grapple Hook on his left arm. He was then pulled behind one of the statues by the Grapple Hook.
After dispelling the Levitation Charm, Liam grabbed the black cloth covering the Rooster Cage and used the ritual array to sense the Basilisk's position.
The Basilisk moved just like an ordinary snake. As it slithered out of the hole and stopped to flick its tongue to detect its surroundings, Liam made his move.
He activated the ritual array on the floor, which emitted a golden glow, forming one golden ring after another around the Basilisk. At the same time, Liam pulled back the black cloth covering the cage, and the roosters inside began to crow loudly when they saw the light.
The Basilisk was clearly stunned by the sudden attack. After all, this was its first response to a summons in fifty years. It had expected to meet a new descendant of Slytherin and fulfill its mission under their command, but instead, it was met with a barrage of attacks as soon as it emerged.
Liam channeled his Spiritual Energy to forcefully turn the Basilisk's head to the predetermined position through the golden rings. Fortunately, due to the sudden attack and the roosters' crows, the Basilisk was in a state of confusion, and the pressure from the ritual array was not too intense.
Once he had the Basilisk's head in the right position, Liam shouted, "Fire!"
The Weapon Stations, upon receiving the voice command, began firing Crossbow Bolts in the designated direction. Liam then felt a sudden increase in pressure from the ritual array. After a series of dense explosions, he took out a Mirror from his pocket and peeked around the stone pillar to check the Basilisk's condition.
The results were mixed. The good news was that two-thirds of the Crossbow Bolts had hit their mark and exploded inside the Basilisk. The Basilisk's head, which had been a focus of the attack, was now riddled with wounds, and its eyes had become two terrifying, black, empty sockets from which dark blood was oozing. The snake's body was also covered in various sizes of wounds, some exposing bone, and its scales had fallen off in large patches, revealing the flesh underneath.
The bad news was that the Basilisk was still alive and had been enraged. Liam saw the light rings that had been restraining the Basilisk crack and shatter one by one. The Basilisk had exceeded the strength limit of the ritual array, which flashed twice before being completely destroyed.
Freed from its restraints, the enraged Basilisk let out a bone-chilling hiss and charged towards Liam's position.
Facing an enemy that had unexpectedly upgraded in the middle of a battle was a terrible situation. After all, Liam's experience with raiding in online games had taught him that such unplanned events often led to a total wipe.
Losing both eyes and suffering severe injuries would be fatal for most creatures. While snakes generally don't rely entirely on their eyes to sense their surroundings, the loss of vision and its most potent weapon was an unacceptable blow for the Basilisk.
Even though the Basilisk usually enters a dormant state under the influence of Slytherin's magic, this doesn't mean it enjoys being as still as a rock. Liam's attack significantly impaired its mobility, and the Basilisk's simple brain marked Liam as an eternal enemy.
After determining Liam's position, the Basilisk ignored the rooster's crowing, which it despised, and charged directly at him.
Seeing the massive Basilisk rushing towards him, Liam used his Grapple Hook to latch onto the protruding patterns on the opposite stone pillar and swung over. The Basilisk, likely due to the attack on its head, lost its balance and crashed into the stone pillar with a loud bang.
The pillar was snapped in half at the waist, and the Basilisk, still moving forward, broke another pillar before finally stopping at the third. Liam watched the rising dust with a hint of fear and swallowed hard. If he had been a bit slower, he would probably be minced meat by now.
As the dust cleared, the Basilisk's body reappeared, with even more scales peeling off. The shattered rocks scraping against its body created more wounds.
"Disintegration Spell", Liam pointed his wand at the remaining part of the pillar connected to the ceiling. The precarious piece was struck and fell directly onto the Basilisk.
The Basilisk quickly dodged upon hearing the commotion, but its wounds and massive size prevented it from completely evading. The stone hit its tail, and with a great effort, it pulled its tail out from under the rock. However, Liam noticed that a large number of scales had peeled off and broken from the Basilisk's tail, and it was even slightly deformed. This attack had clearly inflicted significant damage.
"Hisss", the Basilisk began to breathe heavily, and a green gas started to spew from its mouth. Liam, standing far away, felt his head start to spin.
Not good, it's poisonous. Thinking this, Liam pulled a Toxin Ward from his pocket and slapped it onto his body. Then, he drew a vial of Broad-Spectrum Antitoxin from his belt, which he had made while practicing potion-making for Madam Pomfrey, bit the stopper off, and drank it. He was grateful that Madam Pomfrey only accepted excellent potions, so these good-quality potions were given to him as second-rate products, and now they came in handy.
Indeed, the legacy of the four founders should never be underestimated. Neither the novels he read in his past life nor the research he conducted in this life mentioned that a Basilisk could spew toxic gas. Fortunately, he always prepared thoroughly before each adventure, carrying various potions and talismans. Otherwise, he might have been in serious trouble here.
However, even from a distance, just a whiff of the toxic gas was enough to make his enhanced body feel dizzy. This meant that if the Basilisk bit him, it would likely be a fatal event, as he had no direct antidote for snake venom.
At this moment, Liam was secretly relieved that he had unleashed his full strength when the Basilisk first appeared, catching it off guard. Otherwise, with a fully capable Basilisk, he doubted he could have even escaped successfully, let alone fought it.
But now, having deprived the Basilisk of its most dangerous instant-kill ability and most of its senses while inflicting significant damage, Liam felt confident he could finish it off.
