Chapter 11: Two Types of Essence
Chapter 11: Two Types of Essence
Lin Sai stared at the two guards as they left the chapel's entrance.
For a moment, Lin Sai was confused by the situation.
Since his arrival in the town and his two days of illness, the only person he had come into contact with was the nun standing before him.
The guards had specifically sought him out.
It was clear that the nun had informed the local lord of his presence.
But why, after the guards had come, did the nun go back on her previous decision and stop Lin Sai?
The elderly nun immediately understood Lin Sai's confusion.
She walked to the altar, put away the scripture she had been using for prayer, and then explained in a calm and steady tone:
"An Rui is the ruler of this town, and he must be made aware of your existence. But a young Awakened should have the right to choose their own path, rather than being blindly led onto the path of war."
The path of war! Lin Sai pondered this, then cautiously asked, "Is this lord a war enthusiast?"
The nun shook her head.
"He is a proud and good man."
"But like all those of the Death Sect, he is more accustomed to using his own might to solve problems."
The Death Sect...
Just hearing the name, Lin Sai could guess what they specialized in.
The Law Knights, without a doubt, were the most representative example.
Awakened individuals, starting from the art of war and refining their skills, often developed extraordinary abilities, which could easily turn into what the nun had described.
As Lin Sai thought about this, the nun suddenly introduced herself:
"Child, my name is Red Moon."
Then, the elderly nun, in a rare moment, hesitated for a few seconds.
Her eyes remained steady, but when she asked Lin Sai a question, she paused for a moment before speaking:
"Are you willing to become my disciple?"
The next second, without hesitation, Lin Sai replied,
"My name is Lin Sai, and I am willing to become your disciple!"
"Good, and you may continue to call me 'Granny'."
Lin Sai's mentor smiled and nodded, and a hint of relief appeared in her cloudy eyes.
However, her ability to control her emotions was remarkable.
This scene quickly disappeared, and the nun stood up, leading Lin Sai towards the backyard of the chapel.
"Lin Sai, follow me."
Lin Sai followed the nun to the backyard.
They opened a locked door, which led to the underground of the chapel.
The nun didn't immediately take Lin Sai inside. Instead, she fetched a candlestick from the neighboring room, lit it, and waited for a moment before descending into the basement with Lin Sai.
After walking down a not-too-long earthen staircase, they discovered that the underground of the chapel concealed two rooms.
On the left was a sturdy iron door, securely locked with an iron chain, and on the right was an open door, revealing a cellar-like space filled with winter supplies and food.
Lin Sai curiously asked, "Granny, what are we doing here? Do you need me to carry something upstairs?"
Lin Sai's mentor remained silent.
She walked to the right, took out a wooden box from the corner of the cellar, and opened it.
Lin Sai peered inside; the box was not full, or one could say, it was empty.
There were only three pitted blood-colored stones. Without explanation, he might have thought they were rough footstones.
"Bloodstones," the mentor said, taking out the lighter-colored stone and placing it in Lin Sai's hand. "Close your eyes and feel it carefully."
Lin Sai followed her instructions.
Then, he sensed a special essence flowing into him from the bloodstone.
At first, Lin Sai didn't notice any changes. But when his mentor took the bloodstone away and he checked his status panel, he was astonished to find that the red words 'Disease - Cold' had disappeared! Looking at the bloodstone in his mentor's hand, the red hue had also faded slightly.
"Cough, cough."
Lin Sai coughed habitually, his throat feeling neither sore nor itchy.
He was truly healed!
"People fear death, believing it has the power to cure diseases, and bloodstones are a manifestation of this healing power," the nun explained timely.
She held the bloodstone she had just taken out, locked the box again, and then, holding Lin Sai's hand, they returned to the surface.
"But the power of death must not be abused," she continued.
"Except for special occasions and necessary moments of dire need, bloodstones should be sealed away."
Lin Sai was certain that his cold was not a necessary moment.
The only possible answer seemed to be the former.
"Was there a special occasion earlier?" Lin Sai asked, curious about the events that had transpired.
His godmother, in a gentle tone, provided the answer: "You have become my disciple and joined my sect. That is the special occasion."
This news seemed to delight the Red Moon Lady, and she continued to elaborate on their doctrine: "We revere death and name our sect after this reverence."
"From now on, you must remember this tenet and never neglect or desecrate life," she emphasized.
Lin Sai nodded seriously, then voiced his confusion, "Do I need to perform a ceremony to join the sect? And why is it called a sect instead of a religion?"
His godmother replied, "Reverence lies within the heart, not in rituals. This is especially true for death."
"We do not worship it, but revere, sense, and comprehend it. That's why we are a sect, not a religion. Ordinary people have religious obsessions about death, so when dealing with the public, our sect adopts a church system for inheritance."
After a brief exchange, the two returned to Lin Sai's room.
His godmother once again asked Lin Sai to sit on the bed, and her two aged and withered hands held his young and vibrant right hand.
In the next moment, his godmother's essence began to flow within Lin Sai's body.
She, too, was an Awakened one.
Lin Sai was not surprised by this revelation; the villagers' attitude, the guards' behavior, and his godmother's knowledge were not traits of ordinary people.
But his godmother fell silent.
Without permission, the Red Moon Lady would never intrude upon another's body.
So, when she examined Lin Sai's essence for the first time, she realized just how special the child before her was.
Within Lin Sai's body, there were two types of essence!
"Life and Will..."
His godmother recalled Lin Sai's account of his experiences and quickly deduced the truth: "On the eve of the Harvest, you spontaneously awakened Life Essence. On the day of the Harvest, the Righteous One rescued you, triggering the rule of external awakening, granting you Will Essence."
Lin Sai knew this was the foundation of his awakening, the most crucial aspect, and so he eagerly asked, "Godmother, are there any special benefits to having two types of essence?"
His godmother's response was as calm and steady as ever, "Normally, an Awakened one would choose to cultivate only one type of essence, as focusing on both would hinder progress and may even cause interference between the two. I will teach you the cultivation methods, but the choice is yours to make."
She then asked a question, "Lin Sai, do you know how to read and write?"
In this world, it was a given that most would not.
They would simply shake their heads.
But Lin Sai, having received an education from another world, couldn't help but blush in embarrassment, "I... I'm just a country boy, I never had an education."
His godmother didn't say much more.
She stood up, leading Lin Sai to her own room.
It was the same size as Lin Sai's room, but it felt more lived-in.
A candle stood by the desk, with paper and pen nearby. A wet towel hung on a rack next to the door, and the cabinet against the wall was filled with books and scrolls, meticulously maintained without a speck of dust.
His godmother took out a bundle of scrolls, untied the rope, and opened them in front of Lin Sai: "From now on, every morning, you will study the written word."
Lin Sai leaned in for a closer look.
Indeed, the pages were filled with unfamiliar characters from another world.
His godmother pointed to the first character and said, "This is 'I.' Remember how to write it, and you can practice on the ground in the courtyard. Your name is 'Lin Sai,' and it's written like this..."
The initial lesson was not arduous.
After teaching a few characters and confirming that Lin Sai could remember and practice on his own, his godmother temporarily left, saying she had business to attend to in the graveyard.
Lin Sai picked up a stick and began practicing writing on the ground, as was only natural.
He expected that learning this unfamiliar script would occupy him for a long time.
But when Lin Sai looked at his attribute panel, and saw the newly appeared 'Universal Script' with a yellow experience bar indicating progress, he knew his 'cheat' had arrived!
