Chapter 11: Puppet Constructs
Chapter 11: Puppet Constructs
As everyone was stunned by Su Nan's lightning-fast tactics, he himself was still somewhat dissatisfied.
"If my mental power were a bit higher, that acid spray would have killed the Iron Devourers outright."
Feeling a bit regretful, Su Nan pointed his hand, and another acid spray shot out like an arrow, aiming for an Iron Devourer.
Sizzle!
Despite the Iron Devourer's quick dodge, it was still hit on its side, and a large portion of its waist was instantly corroded, affecting its movements.
Seizing the opportunity, Kui dashed forward and delivered a swift sword strike, slicing the Iron Devourer in two.
The brothers worked in perfect harmony, quickly dispatching four Iron Devourers in a short while.
Seeing this, the morale of the group soared.
The Iron Devourers, sensing the danger, began to retreat.
Noticing this, Kui quickly shouted, "Don't let them escape! Block them!"
The knights charged at the Iron Devourers.
Su Nan narrowed his eyes and cast a Sleep Spell at the one lagging behind.
To his surprise, the Iron Devourer showed no signs of being affected.
"The spell didn't work?"
Su Nan was taken aback.
At that moment, one of the Iron Devourers suddenly leaped and vanished into the rock wall as if it had submerged into water, the entire process so smooth that no one had time to react.
The other Iron Devourers followed suit, disappearing into the walls one by one.
Seeing the last Iron Devourer about to collide with the wall, Su Nan, who had been momentarily stunned, finally reacted. A faint light flashed in his eyes.
In an instant, the Iron Devourer's graceful movement came to a sudden halt, frozen mid-air as if held by an invisible giant hand, unable to touch the ground or the wall.
No matter how it struggled, it couldn't break free from the invisible restraint.
"Finish it!" Su Nan commanded.
The group, still in shock at the bizarre sight, snapped out of their stupor and attacked.
Crack!
The Iron Devourer in mid-air shattered into pieces.
"Su Nan, what you just did..."
Kui looked at Su Nan, his eyes filled with astonishment.
While the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion was within his understanding, the incredible techniques Su Nan had just displayed were far beyond his comprehension.
Su Nan knew what he was thinking and calmly explained, "That was a spell."
A spell!
The others silently pondered this word, feeling as if a whole new world was unfolding before their eyes.
Ignoring the others, Su Nan quickly approached one of the Iron Devourers that had been cut in half and squatted down to examine it.
After a moment, a strange expression appeared on his face.
"Is something wrong?"
Seeing Su Nan's expression, Kui asked urgently.
Su Nan shook his head and stood up. "I think I know where these Iron Devourers came from."
When the Sleep Spell failed, he had already sensed something was off.
There were generally only two scenarios where a creature could be immune to spells.
One was having sufficiently high magic resistance, like dragons.
Dragons were known for their innate high magic resistance, with adult dragons immune to all spells below the third circle.
The other was if the creature's life form naturally resisted a specific spell.
For example, elemental beings, undead, and puppet constructs could all resist the Sleep Spell.
The Iron Devourers could only be the latter.
"I thought they were a metallic form of life, but they're actually puppet constructs."
During his examination, Su Nan found enchanted runes in the fragments of the Iron Devourer's body.
Natural life forms could not have enchanted runes inside them.
The only explanation was that the Iron Devourers were artificially created!
And the only ones capable of creating puppets were wizards (apprentices)!
"There must be a legacy left by a wizard deep in this mine!"
Su Nan felt a surge of excitement.
He had originally planned to search for the legacy of a wizard after advancing to the rank of Second-Class Wizard Apprentice, but he never expected to find one near Blackstone City.
This was undoubtedly a tremendous surprise!
Under Su Nan's explanation, Kui and the others wore expressions of utter shock.
No one had ever imagined that these Iron Devourers, with their knight-like combat abilities and the bizarre skill to burrow into rock walls, were actually puppets created by wizards!
The wondrous potions, terrifying spells, and powerful puppet constructs—all these things that seemed impossible to the common folk—were actually the creations of wizards!
What kind of group were these wizards?
The more they learned, the more they felt the mystique and power of the wizards.
According to legend, over a thousand years ago, wizards once ruled the entire continent, creating an unprecedented golden age.
Before, they had considered this nothing more than a vague legend, but now it seemed like it could very well have been a real event!
Each member of the group had their own thoughts, and for a moment, the tunnel fell into silence.
Su Nan, however, was unfazed. He told Kui a few words and then sat down to meditate, restoring his mental energy.
The battle had drained a significant amount of his mental energy, and considering the tough battles ahead, it was best to be fully restored before continuing.
After about two hours, Su Nan finished his meditation, and the group continued their journey.
Fear comes from the unknown.
Once they knew the origins of the Iron Devourers, their fear of these monsters diminished significantly.
Especially after the recent battle where they had taken down five Iron Devourers, the team's morale soared to new heights.
However, what puzzled them was that the Iron Devourers had disappeared, not reappearing at all along the way.
"Where did those monsters go?" Jordon grumbled, smacking his lips.
Kui also frowned.
If the remaining Iron Devourers were hiding, they really had no way to deal with them.
Finding a group of wall-burrowing Iron Devourers in the dim, labyrinthine underground tunnels was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Su Nan pondered thoughtfully.
High-level puppets had autonomous consciousness and artificial intelligence comparable to humans, but the Iron Devourers clearly did not fall into this category.
They were obviously low-level puppets, generally following a specific set of instructions.
For example, when faced with an enemy they couldn't handle, they would prioritize their own safety.
This explained why no lord had ever been able to eradicate the Iron Devourers.
Even a Grand Knight would be at a loss when dealing with a group of 'bully the weak and fear the strong' monsters with exceptional hiding skills.
However, just because previous lords had no solution didn't mean Su Nan didn't have one.
He closed his eyes and concentrated, sensing the energy particles in the air.
If everything went as expected, these Iron Devourers were likely the guardians of the unknown wizard legacy deep in the mine.
Once they found the location of the wizard legacy, the Iron Devourers would surely appear to block their path, allowing them to eliminate the monsters.
The location of the wizard legacy would have a much higher concentration of energy particles than other places.
By following the path with the highest concentration of energy particles, they would likely find their target.
After a short while, Su Nan opened his eyes and pointed to the tunnel entrance on the right. "Let's go this way."
Kui was momentarily stunned but quickly reacted, leading the way without hesitation.
The others snapped out of their stupor and hurriedly followed.
The journey was punctuated by stops and starts.
Every time they encountered a fork in the tunnel, Su Nan would pause to sense the energy particles and then decide the direction to proceed.
After what seemed like an eternity, the group suddenly stopped.
This time, it wasn't because they encountered a monster or a fork in the tunnel; it was because the path had ended.
To be precise, a dark, heavy door had sealed off the entire tunnel.
