Chapter 11: Fourteen Spells
Chapter 11: Fourteen Spells
Five days later,
Jerry held his wand, slightly nervous, pointing it at the wooden door and whispered the spell:
"Alohomora!"
A faint magical energy flowed from Jerry's body, guided by his mental focus, up his arm, and into the wand. The wand amplified it, transforming it into a blue beam of light that shot out and precisely hit the lock on the door.
"Click, click, click!"
The previously locked door, under the effect of Jerry's Alohomora, shuddered mechanically and then opened automatically.
"Phew, finally, it worked!"
Seeing that the Alohomora had been successfully cast, Jerry let out a long breath of relief.
In fact, two days ago, he had gradually read and memorized all the magical knowledge and spells from the four spellbooks by intermittently activating the "Mind Enhancer" function.
However, just understanding the theoretical knowledge in the spellbooks didn't mean he could successfully cast the corresponding spells.
While the spells in these books were the most basic and simplest, Jerry's understanding, after integrating the content from the four books, was that wizards could cast spells because they possessed a special magical lineage that allowed them to generate a unique and powerful force called magic.
Magic was based on this force, which was transformed through incantations and mental focus to produce various wondrous effects.
To successfully cast a spell, you first needed to have magic within you. This was why Muggles and Squibs, even if they knew the incantations, couldn't cast spells.
In addition to magic, you needed a wand.
A wand acted as an amplifier and stabilizer, enhancing and stabilizing the magic you channeled, allowing you to cast spells more effectively.
Without a wand, it was still possible to cast spells, but it required a wizard to have a sufficiently powerful magic core and a strong mastery of magic.
Different wands had varying degrees of amplification and stabilization.
The more suitable a wand was for you, the easier and more powerful your spells would be.
An unsuitable wand would increase the difficulty of casting and might even render the spell impossible to use.
Besides a wand, to successfully cast a spell, you needed a solid theoretical foundation and a clear understanding of the spell you intended to cast.
Each word in the incantation had to be pronounced clearly and accurately, and the rhythm of the incantation had to be perfectly timed.
The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1) mentioned a wizard named Baruffio, who, due to mispronouncing an 'f' as an 's', found himself lying on the floor with a buffalo standing on his chest.
Thus, to correctly cast a spell, you needed to practice, and practice, and practice some more. With enough practice, you could naturally and precisely cast the spell.
Of course, some spells were more complex and required more advanced techniques, which the books might not cover. These techniques often required guidance from a professional teacher to learn gradually.
After two days of practice, Jerry finally found some of these techniques and successfully cast his first spell—Alohomora.
With his first success, his subsequent practice would become smoother, and he was confident he could master all the first-year spells in no time.
Ten days later, Jerry held his wand and continuously practiced various spells in his room.
The spells taught in the first year were generally simple and did not require much magic.
Even with the magical power Jerry has now, he can easily cast these spells, but their power is still far from what it should be.
In the four magic books, or rather three, as Theories of Magic only contains theoretical knowledge, there are a total of fourteen spells recorded:
Softening Charm, Cutting Charm, Alohomora, Levitation Charm, Locking Charm, Reparo, Transfiguration Charm, Restoration Charm, Snot Charm, Incendio, Repelling Charm, Smoke Screen Charm, Lumos, and Nocturnus.
Among these, Jerry still isn’t very proficient with the Transfiguration Charm, but he has basically mastered the others.
However, out of the fourteen spells, only the Cutting Charm and Incendio have any offensive capability, and even then, they are not very powerful. With his current magical power, the Cutting Charm can barely cut through fabric, and Incendio can only produce a small flame, similar to a lighter.
Initially, Jerry thought that one of these books would contain the Full Body Bind spell, the one Hermione used to immobilize Neville in the movie.
After all, in terms of practicality in combat, that spell seemed the most useful.
If he knew the Full Body Bind, he could have easily petrified the robbers and dealt with them effortlessly!
However, it turned out that the Full Body Bind was not recorded in the first-year textbooks. It might be a spell that Hermione, the model student, learned from some magic book in the library, or it could be from a higher-year textbook.
No wonder Ron and Harry looked so puzzled when they saw Hermione cast that spell. Even though they were not the best students, they couldn’t have been completely unaware of the few dozen spells taught in the first-year curriculum, especially by the end of the term.
Unless the textbook didn’t include the Full Body Bind at all, which is why they looked so surprised when they saw Hermione use it.
Despite the lack of offensive power in the first-year spells, they are still magical, and Jerry believes that if used creatively, they could produce unexpected effects.
To be on the safe side, he thinks he should experiment with the combinations of these spells before he returns.
At the same time, he needs to replenish his supply of Little Red Stars, which he has completely depleted.
He remembers that young wizards are not supposed to cast spells outside of school, as the Ministry of Magic would detect it.
However, it seems that this rule does not apply to young wizards before they start school. In the movie, Hermione mentioned that she had successfully cast spells at home before the start of the school year.
So, during this period before he enters Hogwarts, he can freely cast spells as long as he is not caught by the Ministry of Magic.
The chances of that happening are likely very small.
Wizards are not numerous, and the orphanage where he lives is not in London but in a small town in Surrey. As long as he is careful, it shouldn’t be a problem.
