Chapter 109: The Plane Beneath the Glacier (Second Update)
Chapter 109: The Plane Beneath the Glacier (Second Update)
Los Angeles, Tony's ultra-luxury mansion.
"Director, Agent Hill has replied that Miss Wizard has been safely returned to Hell's Kitchen!"
Black Widow reported to Nick, who was talking to Tony.
Nick nodded and then pointed to the large box marked "Property of Howard Stark", looking at Tony again:
"Your father was far more than you imagine. He was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D., and this box is his legacy to you. Open it, and you might solve all your problems."
After speaking, Nick stood up and glanced at his watch:
"It's getting late, and I have other work to handle. You'll stay here and study this box. I'll have Agent Coulson—yes, the one you've met before—supervise you.
And Natasha will continue to work undercover at Stark Industries. That's all!"
"Wait, wait, wait, what are you talking about? I don't even know what this is, how to open it, and you can't restrict my freedom..."
Tony immediately became agitated upon hearing Nick's words.
However, Nick ignored him, giving him a stern look before turning and leaving.
Even Black Widow, as she followed Nick out, kindly reminded Tony that all communications in the mansion had been cut off.
"Alright, Agent Coulson? You seem different from the last time we met!"
After Nick and Black Widow left, Tony reluctantly approached Coulson, who was smiling.
Coulson proudly touched his hairline:
"I have Miss Wizard's Magic to thank for that!"
Tony nodded:
"Oh, so her Magic can grow hair. That's amazing. By the way, I'm going to do some physical training and then head to the basement to start my experiment. It would be great if you could send some of your people to bring me some food or drinks!"
However, Coulson saw right through Tony's plan.
With a smile, he replied:
"Sorry, Mr. Stark, that's not part of my job. Director Fury's orders are to keep you here by any means necessary. If you try any tricks,
I'll knock you out and watch you drool on the floor while I enjoy 'Super Nanny'!"
Tony: "..."
That evening, at the New York branch.
Nick Fury looked at Hill with surprise:
"You're saying that after searching all the registered records in New York, you didn't find any child matching the wizard's description?"
"That's correct. Unless she's an illegal immigrant, we wouldn't have missed her records. But that's unlikely!"
Hill reported.
Illegal immigrants were typically from Mexico or other foreign countries. The wizard's appearance was clearly American, or perhaps more British, and her behavior didn't suggest she was an illegal immigrant.
Fury nodded, clearly agreeing with Hill's assessment.
"Did you observe anything useful during the night?"
It turned out that while the main purpose was to get the wizard's help, Nick had also instructed Hill to observe her every move and gather information from the details.
Hill organized her thoughts and replied:
"Overall, there were no issues. The only thing I can't figure out is the extent of her strange Magic. But there's one point that puzzles me!"
"Which one?"
Nick raised an eyebrow.
Hill continued:
On the transport plane, Coulson had asked the wizard why they always wore a hat and a mask. The wizard replied that the mask, hat, and their wizard robe were all very important magical items that could help them cast spells and assist in battle.
"Her wizard robe can indeed block bullets, even armor-piercing bullets from a sniper rifle. So, it makes sense that the hat and mask might have some other functions as well!"
Fury nodded.
"But Director, if her hat and mask are really that important, why didn't she go to retrieve them when the armor-piercing bullet forced her into the store? Instead, she waited until after the battle was over to go back for them.
Perhaps she was too angry and forgot, but the wizard doesn't seem like the type to be easily provoked!"
Hill voiced her most pressing concern.
Fury quickly understood Hill's underlying implication:
"You're saying that the wizard's appearance at the time might not have been her true form, which is why she has been wearing the mask ever since?"
"I just think it's a possibility. Given how powerful her magic is, she might be able to temporarily change her appearance, like our Electro Veil!"
As Nick's most trusted assistant, Hill knew that S.H.I.E.L.D. had a special device called the Electro Veil. When worn, it could project a realistic virtual image on the face, allowing the wearer to change their appearance to look like anyone.
With the wizard's extensive magical abilities, it was possible they had a similar power.
Nick fell silent for a moment before speaking:
"If that's the case, it could be problematic. According to this reasoning, the wizard's gender and age might also be disguised with magic.
This would make it extremely difficult to determine her true identity!"
However, he soon realized that this line of thinking could lead to a dead end.
While the wizard's magic was indeed powerful, it was not without limits. If they could change everything at will, they wouldn't need to wear a mask all the time.
Moreover, based on the wizard's behavior and various observations, whether the wizard was male or female, young or old, they still met the criteria for an Avenger in his mind.
Instead of wasting energy trying to uncover the wizard's true identity and risking their ire, it would be better to build a relationship with the wizard. Over time, they might earn the wizard's trust and dispel any reservations.
More importantly, Fury's respect for the wizard had increased significantly after the potion that saved Tony and the various magical feats they had witnessed.
If they angered the wizard, it would be much harder to ask for their help in the future if a similar situation arose.
"Alright, let's put the investigation into the wizard's true identity on hold for now."
"Understood, Director. There's another matter I need to report."
Hill nodded and handed Nick a file.
Nick took the file and saw that it contained recent surveillance reports on Dr. Banner.
However, one particular detail caught his attention.
Dr. Banner's failed suicide attempt in the Arctic, where Hulk emerged and smashed the ice, led to a Russian oil exploration team discovering a suspected Wwii-era aircraft in the fractured ice.
Preliminary analysis by experts suggests that the aircraft buried in the ice is extremely similar to the one Captain America was piloting at the time.
