Chapter 109: Stealing Divine Authority
Chapter 109: Stealing Divine Authority
Ved remained stunned.
After being banished by her master, Dobby had been devastated. She had drowned her sorrows in drink and wept bitterly, but had she ever tried to return?
Later, when Bartemius Crouch and his son came to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament, what was Dobby doing?
Did she ever consider going back to help her former master, who had been cursed by the Imperius Curse?
And what of the other house-elves who had been expelled or unintentionally set free by their masters? Would they attempt to return to their former masters and reinstate their employment?
Or would they... fall to their knees, weeping bitterly... and then accept their fate and wander aimlessly?
Although Ved knew many domesticated house-elves, they all belonged to Hogwarts. Most of them were content with their current lives; none longed for freedom, nor had any ever been expelled.
This included Zoe and Mackey, who only desired kindness and respect from witches and wizards, without any inclination towards freedom.
However, Professor Mori didn't linger on this topic for long.
After giving Ved a moment's pause, he continued, "After the success of this precedent, many witches and wizards became fascinated with alchemy."
"But it's not an easy endeavor. Numerous individuals were killed by their own creations, and alchemy gradually became a forbidden art. However, what truly led to the complete prohibition of this magic was the birth of another creature."
"In the fifteenth century, a wizard by the name of Axistus built a castle on a remote island and lured Muggle ships to its shores. He performed unspeakable acts on the Muggle sailors and crew."
"It is said that those who were sent to investigate later... refused to speak of what they discovered there. And among the least horrifying parts was that the place had become a haven for Dementors."
"And that place was Azkaban."
"Dementors feed on happiness, and merely approaching them fills one with depression and despair. They can also suck out a human's soul, turning them into mindless creatures like themselves. The only effective defense against them is the Patronus Charm."
"These beings cannot be truly killed. Even if temporarily destroyed, they will regenerate from the decay and darkness. They transcend life and death."
"The 'immortality' that humans yearn for is something Dementors possess from the moment of their creation."
"—So, in a sense, this alchemy could be considered extremely successful, albeit utterly useless to witches and wizards."
A question suddenly occurred to Ved. "Professor, witches and wizards can defend against Dementors with the Patronus Charm, but Muggles can't even see these creatures, let alone resist them..."
"Yes, that's correct," Professor Mori acknowledged. "Are you concerned that these monsters might harm your parents? In the early eighteenth century, the Ministry of Magic reached an agreement with the Dementors to guard the prisoners in Azkaban and not leave the island."
"Although I've always considered it a foolish decision, it has proven relatively effective so far."
Ved shook his head and murmured, "No, I was actually wondering—during the Wizarding Wars, why didn't the Pure-Blood fanatics and Death Eaters ever make use of Dementors?"
Professor Mori paused, taken aback, before responding, "Because to Dementors, the souls of witches and wizards, filled with magic, are far more appealing than those of Muggles... Moreover, witches and wizards capable of casting the Patronus Charm are actually quite rare..."
He slowed down, adding, "And that's the end of the story. I trust you understand—alchemy is both wondrous and perilous."
"It enables witches and wizards to create species that surpass their own life forms... Each alchemical creation is a unique process. There are no identical humans in the world, and thus, there can be no identical alchemical lives.
"Creating life is the domain of the divine, but wizards can steal a fraction of that authority."
"The temptation is immense, and any capable alchemist will eventually tread this path. No matter how much the Ministry of Magic forbids it, there will always be wizards who dare to venture into the forbidden realm of creating life."
"I only hope that when you one day develop an interest in alchemical life, you will remember our conversation today, remember the failures we discussed, and remember what I taught you—'Bold in imagination, cautious in verification.'"
"In the pursuit of alchemy, one can never be too careful."
"Of course, what we will be studying today is still the most basic part—how to imbue thought into inanimate objects..."
...
Professor Mori only held three classes on biological alchemy before he gave Ved a few books and a pile of alchemical materials, leaving him to slowly figure out the rest through practice.
After dinner, Steven invited Ved to his farm.
"If you have any good friends, feel free to invite them too. There are a lot of interesting little animals on my farm that children love." Steven said.
Ved asked, "Won't we be a bother?"
"Not at all. Some of the little guys love children, and they'll be delighted to have company."
Steven teased, "If you have a girl you like, this is a great opportunity!"
Ved replied slowly, "I'm only twelve, why would I be thinking about romance?"
"Good." Professor Mori nodded in approval. "You should focus on your studies at school and not be distracted by such things. As for you—"
He suddenly turned to Steven and said irritably, "When are you going to get a girlfriend? Do you plan on spending your life with just your bird snake?"
Steven shrunk his neck and muttered, "You used to tell me the same thing when I was in school... But my classmates who had girlfriends in school all got married right after graduation..."
"It's been twenty years since you graduated from Hogwarts! In all this time, if you hadn't spent every day on the farm, you could've had eight relationships by now! Didn't the Shaafiq family's daughter keep smiling at you at the last banquet? Why didn't you try to stay in touch with her?"
Steven paused for a moment, looking perplexed. "Was someone from the Shaafiq family there last time?"
Professor Mori glared at him, and Steven immediately fell silent.
Thankfully, with Ved there, Professor Mori didn't continue reprimanding his son.
After dinner, Steven pulled Ved upstairs to pack his bags.
Once upstairs, Steven made a sour face and said, "Let's leave quickly... Otherwise, my dad will start lecturing me again..."
Ved didn't mind. He took out his pen case and silently cast a spell. The pen case unfolded, expanding to the size of a school bag. Ved placed the books, alchemical materials, and some personal belongings inside.
Then the bag returned to the size of a pen case.
This was the beauty of bird snake skin.
When Ved first received it, it looked like a caterpillar, but it could extend to a much larger size.
So Ved folded it back and forth seven times, each fold making it a different size—
The smallest was the size of a pen case, the only size that didn't require the use of the Traceless Expansion Charm; the largest was the size of a closet, with an even more spacious interior.
Another benefit of the Traceless Expansion Charm was that no matter how many items were placed inside, they seemed to occupy another dimension, and the user only felt the weight of the box itself.
As a result, Ved could easily carry it in his pocket.
