Chapter 109: Soaring Proficiency
Chapter 109: Soaring Proficiency
Kakashi Hatake had been strolling nearby and happened to witness the entire scene. However, by the time he arrived, Might Guy was already half-kneeling on the ground. Just as Kakashi was about to intervene, Might Guy suddenly unleashed a burst of power that instantly took down both opponents.
The surge of power that Might Guy had just displayed left Kakashi somewhat bewildered. Now he truly believed what his father had said—Might Guy would become his formidable rival and perhaps even surpass him.
"Of course! Because I am a hardworking genius acknowledged by Teacher Mu Yue!" Might Guy exclaimed, giving a thumbs-up and flashing an exceptionally brilliant smile, his two rows of gleaming white teeth particularly eye-catching.
As soon as he finished speaking, Might Guy's body began to lose control and he fell backward. The sudden outburst had exhausted him.
Kakashi quickly caught Might Guy.
"Next time, remember to leave enough energy to get yourself home, or your father will worry," Kakashi said as he carried Might Guy on his back and started walking towards Might Guy's house.
"Haha, that's why I have a best friend like you," Might Guy laughed.
"I can't always be there by coincidence," Kakashi replied helplessly.
After sending Might Guy to his doorstep and seeing him being welcomed inside by Might Dai, Kakashi finally turned to leave.
Today's display by Might Guy had truly surprised him.
Even now, Kakashi couldn't quite figure out how Might Guy had suddenly unleashed such powerful strength with those last two kicks. He should have been completely exhausted by then.
"Hatake, the teacher said there's a mission tomorrow. Remember not to be late," one of Kakashi's teammates reminded him as they met on the way home.
"Mmm," Kakashi nodded coldly without saying a word, continuing on his way home.
"So cold. You'd think he owes us a lot of money or something," one of his teammates complained.
"He never shows up for group training, never practices coordination, but he's always keen on missions," another chimed in.
"What can you do? He's a genius ninja. Let's just drop it," the first teammate said.
...
Even though he was physically exhausted, Might Guy still made his way to see Mu Yue after dinner.
He visited her every day, and he felt that suddenly skipping a day might worry Mu Yue. Moreover, he also wanted to report to her about his breathing technique.
"Teacher Mu Yue, when I was fighting someone just now, I suddenly entered a state where my strength and speed increased, and even my tired legs were filled with energy again," Might Guy recounted the afternoon's events to Mu Yue.
However, he downplayed the intensity of the fight and didn't mention how exhausted he had been afterward.
Mu Yue immediately checked Might Guy's proficiency in his breathing technique.
Skill: Rock Breathing (Uninitiated: 17/100)
Mu Yue was astonished. Yesterday, Might Guy's proficiency had been zero, but today it had skyrocketed to seventeen.
To put this into perspective, Obito had the highest proficiency yesterday at six points. Might Guy had jumped from zero to seventeen, nearly triple Obito's progress.
Based on Might Guy's account, Mu Yue analyzed that the situation had been particularly dire, and Might Guy was highly compatible with the Rock Breathing technique. His mindset at the time had also aligned with the principles of Rock Breathing, so his potential was unleashed, allowing him to instantly comprehend the teachings and experience a surge in proficiency.
"You don't need to cultivate today. Just sit and watch Obito and the others practice," Mu Yue said.
Might Guy didn't insist and nodded in agreement.
While instructing Obito and Itachi, Mu Yue shared the good news about Might Guy's progress with them.
As someone who cultivated breathing techniques himself, Obito knew how difficult it was. Moreover, according to Mu Yue, Might Guy's Rock Breathing was even more challenging than their Fire Breathing technique. Obito couldn't understand how Might Guy had made such rapid progress in just one day.
He felt like Might Guy had somehow cheated the system.
"Keep working hard, and you'll have your own breakthrough moment too," Mu Yue said with a smile.
Obito had a decent talent for Fire Breathing, and if not for Might Guy's sudden enlightenment, he would likely have been leading in breath cultivation.
Mu Yue even believed that Obito would have been the first to master the breathing technique.
Enlightenment opportunities didn't come every day, and with the difficulty of Rock Breathing, Might Guy could only grind through it with relentless practice day after day.
However, he had already improved significantly from when he first started, and achieving that initial breakthrough was crucial.
Upon hearing the news of Might Guy's rapid progress, Obito suddenly felt immense pressure. Not including today, which was almost over, there were only two days left until the final test.
Originally, he had thought that his spot in the top two was secure, but now it seemed anything but certain.
"Goddess Mu Yue, please bless me with a sudden breakthrough as well," Obito prayed, pressing his palms together.
"Your posture is wrong!" Mu Yue said as she pulled apart Obito's hands.
His prayer had been personally thwarted by the goddess herself.
With his prayer unsuccessful, Obito could only resume his training, repeatedly practicing different breathing patterns and trying to sense subtle changes in his body.
...
On Thursday, Mu Yue continued her regular teaching duties.
However, with the special training coming to an end soon, Mu Yue would give her students a motivational pep talk at the start of each class.
With only a couple of days left, Mu Yue felt that her students could push themselves a little harder during these final days.
At this point, most of the training goals she had set had been achieved.
Group A members, aside from a few new additions, had basically mastered the Body Flicker Technique, regardless of how well they could use it. That depended on the individual, but they had indeed all learned it.
Group B members had mostly completed their tree-climbing and water-walking exercises, resulting in a significant improvement in their chakra control and transformation techniques.
If only the initial Group B members were counted, their average ninja technique score had increased from around 7 to over 9.
Even the outstanding students from the lower grades had rapidly improved during these five weeks of special training, and they would undoubtedly surprise their classmates when the new term began.
"There are only two days left. Make the most of your time and keep cultivating. The Third Hokage will be observing your practical test in two days, so show him the fruits of your labor," Mu Yue continued to motivate her students.
"Finally, the time has come to make our mark and rise to fame," Kotetsu Hagane and Izumo Kamizuki looked at each other and resumed their training, determined to showcase their skills.
"Will there be dumplings if I do well on the test?" Anko Mitarashi only cared about being rewarded with dumplings.
"I don't get why you're all so excited about some old geezer coming to watch," Asuma Sarutobi scowled.
Out of the three hundred students, there might be some who were indifferent to the Third Hokage, but Asuma was probably the only one who held a grudge against him.
"The Third Hokage, huh..." Genma Shiranui recalled the history lessons Mu Yue had taught them.
