Chapter 109: More Scheming
Chapter 109: More Scheming
"Mr. Weasley, I need to remind you of something. Your holiday homework, apart from a few differences, is exactly the same in most places."
After class, Professor McGonagall stopped Fred and George, returning their holiday homework to them. "Take them back and redo them. Next time, if there's another incident of copying, it's detention. Do your own work and stop trying to copy others'."
"We did our own work; it's just that we're so in sync with each other, we ended up with similar answers," the twins said in unison, looking at each other.
Professor McGonagall was taken aback by their response and their uncanny synchronization. She sized them up and down before nodding, "Alright, I'll let it slide this time, but next time it's detention."
Watching Professor McGonagall's departing figure, the twins happily high-fived each other and winked at Lee Jordan and Albert.
"Actually, Professor McGonagall saw through your tricks a long time ago. I'm sure Professor Snape won't let you off easily either," Albert reminded them.
His words soon proved true. The twins' excuses didn't work on Professor Snape, the Potions Master. He simply stared at them coldly and said, "Take them back and redo them."
"At least Professor Snape gave you a chance," Lee Jordan said, rubbing it in as he patted Fred's shoulder. "You know, it's Snape we're talking about. Not getting detention is already good luck for you guys."
"I think Professor Snape can see through our thoughts," George suddenly said.
"Don't look directly into Professor Snape's eyes. It's easier for him to see through you that way," Albert warned. "It's definitely some sort of magic, though I haven't figured out what kind yet."
"Magic?" The three boys looked at each other, but they were mostly convinced.
"Soon, I plan to..." Albert made a walking gesture with his hand, "I'll need to use the rope on the fifth floor of the castle."
"When do you plan to..." Fred's eyes lit up as they knew Albert had mastered the Disillusionment Charm. With this night-time tool, they basically didn't have to worry about being caught by Filch.
"Soon," Albert stopped walking and raised his hand to catch something flying towards them. It was a piece of chalk.
"Good afternoon, Peeves!" Albert raised his wand and deflected all the chalkboxes that Peeves was throwing at them.
Peeves stuck his tongue out at them and was about to throw more things.
"Here, catch..."
Albert threw the chalk back, and it went right through Peeves' head, hitting the wall behind him. Peeves made a rude gesture at them and floated away.
"That's a great place," Fred said in a low voice. "I've always wanted to take a look. I heard the books kept there are quite dangerous."
"What are you talking about?" Lee Jordan was lost, looking at them in confusion.
"The library, the rope," George prompted.
"You mean..." Lee Jordan realized, but before he could finish, the three of them glared at him, and he swallowed his words.
"It's fine as long as you know," Albert patted his shoulder.
"But the stuff there is too advanced for us," Lee Jordan admitted that he knew his own limitations and hadn't dared to venture into that territory as he wouldn't be able to understand it anyway.
"Ancient magic can be quite dangerous for modern wizards," Albert said dismissively. "Back then, wizards had little to no restrictions. The magic they created and used was unrestrained, and many spells are messy by today's standards. Moreover, the recording of those spells was often inconsistent and far from being simple and understandable."
Those ancient books were difficult to understand without thorough research, and some were even written in ancient wizarding runes.
And so, Hogwarts kept those books in the restricted section to prevent students from accessing them and accidentally harming themselves.
But Albert was different. He had the system panel! As long as he read a book and the spell appeared on the panel, he could master it smoothly through the experience pool.
Increasing the variety of magic was indeed quite necessary.
"That reminds me of your Alohomora incident," Fred said, recalling how Albert had dismantled Professor McGonagall's office door.
"I looked into that spell later," Albert continued, capturing the interested gazes of his companions. "Before the invention of Alohomora, people used the spell 'Door Blasting Open' followed by 'Sesame Open' as a means of unlocking. This spell acts like a rude visitor who kicks down someone's door, forcibly blasting it open."
"In comparison, the modern Alohomora is indeed much more refined, which is one of the characteristics of contemporary magic."
"Unbelievable," Lee Jordan exclaimed, his face filled with astonishment.
"That spell is just...cool," the twins exclaimed, their eyes sparkling with eagerness to try it out.
After lunch, the Weasley twins had no choice but to head to the library. They had more homework than the others, and if they didn't finish it in time, they might end up in detention with Snape.
The thought of it was a nightmare for the duo, and they were determined to avoid it at all costs.
"What strange thing are you researching now?" Lee Jordan asked, glancing at Albert's parchment after finishing his homework. There were odd symbols on it that he couldn't understand at all.
"Runic symbols," Albert replied, pointing to a symbol that resembled a simplified yin-yang with three intersecting lines. "This one symbolizes wealth. It is said that carrying an amulet with this symbol increases one's fortune."
"I think you're lucky enough as it is," Lee Jordan muttered under his breath.
"No one would mind having even more luck," Albert said nonchalantly.
"Is that stuff useful?" The twins, busy with their homework, leaned in curiously. "We could use some luck lately."
"Then you need some Felix Felicis," Albert suggested.
"What's that?"
"Liquid luck. It's said that drinking it will give you good luck for a period of time."
"There's such a thing?" The twins were amazed.
"Yes, but apparently, it takes months to brew," Albert explained.
"Months!" George exclaimed, his voice rising in pitch. Feeling the stares of those around him, he quickly shrunk back, pretending to be invisible.
"Brewing Felix Felicis is extremely difficult," Albert whispered. "One small mistake, and it turns into poison."
"How do you know all this?"
"I came across it while doing research for a Snape assignment. I got curious and looked into it further, but unfortunately, I couldn't find the recipe for Felix Felicis." Albert shrugged, offering a casual explanation.
"I'm more curious about whether these things you're making actually work," Field suddenly spoke up. She had been observing Albert for a while and couldn't contain her curiosity any longer.
"I can assure you they don't," Albert said, rolling his eyes. "The rune you were staring at earlier is supposed to increase a guy's charm."
"Oh, so where's the one for increasing a girl's charm?" Field asked casually. In truth, she had also studied ancient runes, and although she had only managed to scrape by with an 'E' on the exam, she could sense that Albert had a profound understanding of the subject.
How on earth did he acquire all this knowledge?
Those intricate runes weren't something one could just casually draw. She had studied them for a long time herself and could only barely decipher them with the help of the annotations on the parchment.
"Oh, there isn't one," Albert replied matter-of-factly. "After all, I'm a guy. If these runes worked, I would have used them on myself first."
