Chapter 1085: What Does Vice Admiral Kuro Like?
Chapter 1085: What Does Vice Admiral Kuro Like?
Lida’s appetite was like trying to fill the sea with stones—endless and insatiable.
Though Kuro had been drunk last night, he still caught wind of the commotion. The clamor downstairs had carried news of Lida devouring six banquet tables’ worth of food, the servers struggling to keep up with his lightning-fast consumption.
Kuro hadn’t had time to deal with him then, but now he could finally issue a warning.
“Not enough to eat? With such a rare feast, if you don’t fight for food, doesn’t it feel like something’s missing?” Lida shrugged, unbothered.
“You’ve got nerve! Do you think pirates attend banquets? Act a little more respectable! You’re a Vice Admiral already, and soon-to-be Admiral, for crying out loud!”
Kuro suddenly trailed off, unable to finish.
“The Admiral’s… what?” Lida tilted his head, puzzled.
“Don’t even mention the Admiral!”
Kuro viciously exhaled a jet of smoke, his frustration boiling over. “Damn it, bewildered? Old Man’s becoming Admiral! I’ll never swallow this insult!”
Lida inwardly rolled his eyes. At least it’s better than before.
Back in the day, Kuro would’ve thrown a tantrum already, dragging him into the chaos. Back then, if someone criticized him for eating, Kuro would’ve flown into a rage. But now, Kuro’s anger was self-contained—Lida had grown used to it, and the outbursts were far less severe.
Though honestly, it was kind of pathetic. Like a whiny woman.
“Hmm? Are you secretly cursing me out in your head?” Kuro narrowed his eyes at Lida.
“No way! You’re so handsome,” Lida shook his head earnestly.
“Oh, stop! I’ve been hiding my true self so deep… How insightful of you to see through me! All this time mentoring you wasn’t in vain,” Kuro waved a hand dismissively, his grin stretching wide enough to nearly bare his teeth.
Lida sighed, rubbing his forehead. He recalled a saying: If someone else notices a man’s handsomeness, it’s genuine. If the man himself brags about it? He’s just an idiot. And right now…
Kuro was definitely being an idiot.
“Whatever, keep entertaining guests. I’ll go back to sleep. Make sure Klah gets everyone settled properly.”
Kuro waved again, yawning. “Wake me later.”
“Fine, fine. All you know how to do is boss people around.”
Lida pouted, exiting the room and closing the door behind him.
Kuro raised an eyebrow. Boss people around? What else am I paying all these subordinates for—to look pretty as paperweights?
...
Last night’s guests hadn’t all arrived yet, but many were trickling back today.
Navy officers who’d received Kuro’s invitations were wrapping up duties, passing on responsibilities, and making their way to Headquarters. Once there, they headed toward the back.
Two grand entrances led to the rear of Headquarters, each guarded by a receptionist: Sazil and Fen Ni, stationed at their respective gates.
“Welcome, welcome!”
Sazil’s smile was glued to his face, greeting every arrival personally.
Such tasks were beneath Vice Admirals, so Commanders like him handled the hospitality. In Headquarters, Commanders were as expendable as foot soldiers.
“Oh, Commander Sazil, you’re on reception duty?” A returning Navy Commander raised an eyebrow. “I heard it’s Admiral Lucius Kro’s sixtieth birthday celebration. Who knew it’d last this long? What extravagance!”
“You haven’t heard the half of it!” Sazil puffed out his chest proudly. “It’s not just Lucius Kro Admiral’s birthday—it’s also celebrating my Vice Admiral Kuro, who’ll be Admiral himself in a few days! Didn’t you hear? Admiral Lucius Kro’s retiring, stepping down from his post. The new Navy’s future? That’ll be none other than my Vice Admiral Kuro!”
Proudly bearing the same surname, Sazil basked in the reflected glory of his superior’s superior.
His commander’s commander was becoming Admiral—the pinnacle of Navy power, every sailor’s dream!
“Admiral?!” The Navy Commander gripped Sazil’s arm, stunned. “You’re serious?!”
“Of course! Sazil Kuro never lies. You doubt me?” Sazil sized up the officer. “Or do you think Vice Admiral Kuro doesn’t deserve it? The Golden Lion himself—Admiral-in-waiting?!”
“I never said that! Don’t twist my words!” the Commander flared up. “You know I’ve always wanted to serve Vice Admiral Kuro!”
He genuinely meant it. Rising through World Recruitment, his strength had earned him a Major’s rank immediately. Just over a year later, he’d rocketed to Commander—meteoric speed.
For ordinary sailors, promotions were painstakingly slow. Combat prowess alone wasn’t enough—many veterans could sink a ship with a single coin, yet remained low-ranked.
Navy promotions were strict, and factions mattered. Without connections or standout power, one could only grind endlessly.
World Recruits like him enjoyed accelerated careers, but at a cost—they weren’t considered “true” Navy. While they had rights, the inner circles excluded them. Even Admirals like Vegapunk and Tatsumaki held little real influence.
To break into the elite, they needed a veteran patron. Few old-school admirals took World Recruits seriously, unless they were exceptional.
Currently, Fleet Admiral Sakazuki’s side demanded absurd standards and was brutally strict. Rumor had it Vice Admiral Aokiji had a habit of killing subordinates on a whim—far too risky.
The Kuzan Remnant led by Togeko and Borsalino was decent, with Smoker Vice Admiral rising as a leader. The lowest barrier for World Recruits, but still not his ideal choice.
No, the best path was Kuro’s faction. Quiet, unambitious, stable. Rewards for merit, penalties rarely enforced. Too good to be true.
“So what do you mean?” Sazil eyed him suspiciously.
“I need a gift!” The Commander frowned. “I brought one for Lucius Kro Admiral’s birthday, but nothing for Vice Admiral Kuro’s promotion! Why else would Kuro host a seven-day banquet? They’re combining celebrations!”
Sazil froze mid-breath.
Gifts?
“You didn’t prepare one?!” the Commander scowled.
“Me? Impossible!” Sazil gaped. “I’m Commander Sazil Kuro, direct subordinate of Vice Admiral Klah himself! How could I not know this? I’ve just been… busy. But hey, you’re buying one, right? Get me one too! I’ll introduce you—we’re peers, it’ll be fine!”
“Seriously? You don’t even need an intro, Commander Sazil. If you’re not disgusted by me, I’d gladly become your aide! Just tell me—what does Vice Admiral Kuro like?”
“Likes…” Sazil scratched his head, uncertain. “Gold?”
