Chapter 1081: The Foreign Legion Advances East
Chapter 1081: The Foreign Legion Advances East
September 25th, 2017
Youzhou, Lingzhi City, a certain training ground.
After opening the last Mythic Treasure Chest, Lu HaiKong took a glance and immediately put away its contents, clearly having obtained something remarkable once again.
The last time he encountered such a situation was with the necklace that still hung around his neck.
This time, Lu HaiKong's behavior indicated that he had acquired something extraordinary, perhaps even surpassing the necklace. It seemed he had obtained another valuable item.
Although his secretive attitude piqued curiosity, Lu HaiKong kept it well hidden, leaving others with no choice but to wonder.
After opening the treasure chest and obtaining the valuable item, Lu HaiKong hesitated before deciding to end the treasure-opening session.
Initially, he had intended to claim the Heaven and Earth Blessing and the special quest reward, but he ultimately changed his mind.
The contents of the treasure chest were only visible to its owner, while the Heaven and Earth Blessing and quest reward might not be as discreet. With Lingzhi City facing various threats, Lu HaiKong chose to forego claiming these rewards, content with the substantial gains from the treasure chest that would keep him occupied for a while.
After opening the treasure chest, Lu HaiKong resumed his busy schedule.
He focused on refining his armor and managing Lingzhi City, while also assisting Zhang Yan from time to time.
These tasks were similar to his previous endeavors, except that after opening the treasure chest, Lu HaiKong finally began exploring Liaoxi Prefecture, which was under the control of the Foreign Demons. Simultaneously, he sent people to Liaodong Prefecture to establish contact with Gongsun Zan.
Due to the Foreign Demons' control over Liaoxi Prefecture, which lay between Lu HaiKong and Gongsun Zan, Lu HaiKong had to send people around the Great Wall into the grasslands, detouring through Liaodong to reach Gongsun Zan.
Although it was a longer route, it was safer. Lu HaiKong was well aware of the strength of the Foreign Demons, and even he might not fare well if he openly ventured into Liaoxi Prefecture. Thus, taking the longer route was a prudent decision.
Lu HaiKong was clearly in a preparatory phase, with various aspects being prepared or guarded against.
Despite his overwhelming victory over the Necroarmy and the Blood Demon General, and even capturing Cheng Yaojin at Lingzhi City, Lu HaiKong was aware that his success had been partly due to luck.
The overwhelming advantage he achieved was a result of both calculated and unforeseen circumstances. If Xun You had not discovered their trap beforehand, allowing Lu HaiKong to prepare in advance, the outcome could have been very different.
Under the blood-red sky, the Blood Demon Generals and the Necroarmy gained significant power. Lu HaiKong's dominance at Lingzhi City might not translate to success within the blood-red sky.
Lu HaiKong understood that in his battle against the Foreign Demons, there was no room for retreat or failure. The Foreign Demons, currently occupying only Liaoxi Prefecture, were already a formidable challenge. If Lu HaiKong were to fail and allow the Foreign Demons to expand, they would grow stronger exponentially.
With that in mind, Lu HaiKong proceeded with utmost caution.
While Lu HaiKong proceeded with caution, the Foreign Demons had no such reservations.
They had descended upon this world with a singular purpose: to wreak havoc and slaughter. After their arrival, their focus naturally shifted to expansion and more slaughter.
With Lu HaiKong guarding their western gateway, the Domain Beyond Demons had no choice but to consider their options. To the south of Liaoxi Prefecture lay the vast sea, and to the north, the vast grassland.
Venturing south was out of the question. While the Domain Beyond Demons had Cheng Yaojin, a Historical General from the Sui Tang Realm, their ranks were primarily composed of Undead and ordinary Domain Beyond demons like the Crimson Demons, devoid of intelligence. It was impossible for them to acquire shipbuilding or sailing skills, effectively blocking their southern route.
Turning north presented its own challenges. The grassland was home to numerous Xianbei and Wuhuan tribes, but they were nomadic peoples, and the constant battles instigated by Gongsun Zan had forced these tribes to retreat deeper into the grassland.
The sudden fall of Liaoxi Prefecture and the ominous crimson sky hanging over it further drove the Xianbei and Wuhuan tribes deeper into the grassland.
Conquering the north was not impossible for the Domain Beyond Demons, but it would be a costly, time-consuming endeavor with minimal gains. Thus, they had only one viable option: to march east towards Liaodong Prefecture.
If the Domain Beyond Demons could break through Gongsun Zan's defense line, they would effectively control the three counties of Liaodong. With Liaodong under their belt, they could even continue eastward and conquer Goguryeo.
Capturing Liaodong and Goguryeo would significantly bolster the Domain Beyond Demons' strength. With millions of Undead under their command, they could easily overwhelm Lu HaiKong's forces in Lingzhi City. This would simultaneously open the gates to Youzhou and Jiuzhou, signaling a dire turn of events for the Three Kingdoms world.
With their goal set, the Domain Beyond Demons wasted no time in taking action.
After the Scholar's descent, the Domain Beyond Demons began their maneuvers.
In the 16th year of the Kaihuang era, the Domain Beyond Demons revealed their true capabilities.
It seemed that the Scholar captured by Lu HaiKong wasn't the only one capable of controlling the Undead army. In fact, he wasn't even the most skilled at it.
The Scholar previously needed several days to gather hundreds of thousands of Undead troops, but this time, the Domain Beyond Demons accomplished the same feat in just one day.
Liaoxi Prefecture had a population of around three million, and on the day of its fall, nearly one million managed to escape. The remaining two million were scattered throughout the prefecture.
Those who stayed in Liaoxi Prefecture, except for a small minority, were found and turned into Undead. There was no escape for those within the prefecture.
Out of the two million people, some were devoured by the Domain Beyond Demons' legions, and approximately eight hundred thousand were transformed into Undead. During the battle at Lingzhi City, this Undead army suffered a loss of around two hundred thousand, leaving only six hundred thousand remaining.
However, whether due to time, numbers, or a change in leadership, the Undead army seemed to have grown stronger despite its reduced size.
Unlike the previous Scholar, who struggled to control the Undead army, the new commander appeared to have a firm grasp. The six hundred thousand Undead troops moved with the precision of a disciplined army, forming tight formations as they advanced towards Gongsun Zan's defense line.
The new commander of the Undead army was far more experienced than the Scholar, and the six hundred thousand Undead troops resembled a well-drilled military force. Combined with four Sui Tang Generals potentially on par with Cheng Yaojin, they formed a formidable force.
This lineup would pose a significant challenge, even for Lu HaiKong himself.
The odds of Gongsun Zan's defense holding were slim, and if it fell, the Domain Beyond Demons would invade Liaodong Prefecture, bringing their plan one step closer to fruition.
