Chapter 108
Chapter 108
"This isn't just an ordinary beast bone", Elder Chen muttered, holding up the jade-like bone and inspecting it curiously. "What makes it special?"
Xiao Chen blinked in surprise. "Master, doesn’t this bone seem unusual to you? At first glance, I even mistook it for white jade—until I touched it."
Elder Chen chuckled, setting the bone down. "Many second-stage spirit beasts leave behind bones that resemble jade after death. This isn’t particularly rare."
Xiao Chen frowned. "But what if this one is exceptionally durable?"
Elder Chen raised an eyebrow. "Durable? Where did you get this?"
Xiao Chen hesitated before answering. "During my recent mission to eliminate a demonic cultivator, I found this among his sacrificial items."
Elder Chen’s expression shifted. "Wait—did this bone block your spell?"
Normal second-stage spirit beast bones would shatter under magical attacks.
Xiao Chen nodded. "Exactly. It absorbed multiple spells without a scratch."
Elder Chen leaned back, intrigued. "If that’s true… I might’ve misjudged it." He sighed, rubbing his chin. "Truth be told, I’ve always focused more on pill forging. For this, we’ll need my elder brother."
Moments later, they arrived at the Lihuo Sect’s Weapon Forging Hall. The Chen family had long been renowned for their dual mastery of alchemy and artifact crafting—while the first branch specialized in pill forging, the second branch, led by Chen Tianfeng, dominated the art of forging.
Xiao Chen had never met the legendary Chen Tianfeng, who had returned just two weeks prior after a three-year exchange program with the Lingyuan Sect in Hezhou. Elder Chen explained as they walked: "He’s been buried in reorganizing the hall since his return. Haven’t even had time to visit home."
Inside the hall, a Chen family disciple guarding the entrance greeted them. "Third Uncle, what brings you here?"
Elder Chen waved him off. "Summon your Second Uncle. I need him immediately."
They settled into the back chamber, where Elder Chen retrieved a pouch of spirit tea from a hidden compartment. "Let’s try this Hezhou specialty", he said, pouring steaming water over the leaves. Xiao Chen glanced at an open register on the table—every name listed bore the Chen surname.
Three quarters of an hour later, a burly figure burst in, his voice booming. "Third Brother, what’s so urgent?"
After introductions, Chen Tianfeng scoffed at the bone. "A second-stage beast bone? What’s there to examine?"
Xiao Chen interjected, "It blocked multiple second-tier spells."
Chen Tianfeng paused, then channeled his spiritual energy into the bone. When nothing happened, he grabbed a hammer and swung. The bone didn’t even dent.
"Impossible!" He snatched an adamantite nail, attempting to carve it—but the nail snapped clean. The bone remained flawless.
Elder Chen whistled. "Even forging-grade adamantite can’t mark it. This is no ordinary relic."
Chen Tianfeng stared, then bowed abruptly. "Apologies, Young Master Chen. I was too hasty."
Xiao Chen waved it off. "No harm done. Can you identify its origin?"
Chen Tianfeng tightened his grip on the bone. "If even my artifact-identification technique fails, this must be a rare treasure. Allow me to research it further."
As the two departed, Chen Tianfeng had already dragged dozens of ancient tomes from the shelves, his brow furrowed in concentration.
Back at Cuiwei Valley, Xiao Chen froze at the courtyard entrance—standing there was the last person he’d expected: Ye Fei.
