Chapter 108: Unspoken Grievances
Chapter 108: Unspoken Grievances
Mort, despite his current injuries, was surprised by the uncommon Radiant Stone weapon wielded by the sheriff, which hindered the healing of his wound. However, he knew that taking out these ordinary people before him was a matter of seconds.
In the eyes of the Night Watch, they witnessed the black-robed figure clutching his abdomen with one hand while the other began to swirl with black flames. Then, with a flash, he rushed towards them.
"Loose arrows!"
A dense rain of arrows flew towards Mort, the Black Flame Adept.
Mort quickly swayed left and right, continuing his charge forward. Despite his injury, he effortlessly dodged the arrows, and not a single arrow from the over ten Night Watch members found its mark!
"Whoosh!"
Mort was now within striking distance. Although Mort's stature wasn't particularly imposing, his presence seemed to loom over them like a dark cloud before a storm, ready to engulf them.
Many of the Night Watch members showed signs of fear, momentarily frozen in place, forgetting to draw their longswords. Mort's eyes flickered with a hint of disdain, confirming his belief that ordinary people were indeed ordinary.
From the moment Mort appeared to the moment he dodged the arrows and charged, Rain's eyes remained fixed on him, his mind intensely focused, never wavering.
Was he injured? Rain wondered.
If that was the case, it wasn't impossible to engage in battle.
With a minute-long 'Power Surge,' he had only used three seconds earlier.
Although Mort's injury significantly affected his speed, his combat awareness remained exceptional, as evidenced by his evasion of the arrows.
Rain knew he had to catch Mort off guard and deliver a devastating blow, further exacerbating his injuries.
Mort's pupils reflected the surroundings of the evening, along with the figures of the Night Watch before him. They all showed expressions of shock, fear, and disbelief.
But then, Mort noticed a young man in plate armor.
However, Mort quickly attributed this to the man being stunned or reacting too slowly.
Mort recognized the young man as one of the two wearing plate armor, likely a trusted subordinate of the Shangjin Town sheriff.
Mort decided to send him back to the embrace of the Goddess.
"Blame your boss," Mort thought.
Mort adjusted his direction slightly, rapidly closing in on Rain. The Black Flame in his hand began to bloom, releasing an eerie black fire.
But Mort instinctively sensed something amiss. As he drew closer, he could see through the gaps in Rain's plate armor helmet and noticed his eyes.
Rain's eyes had rare black pupils, but they showed no fear. Instead, they were remarkably calm, like a tranquil pond without a ripple.
However, Mort's right hand was already raised, and the Black Flame in his hand had begun to swell. He rushed forward, though slightly surprised, but not enough to change his mind about the attack.
Suddenly, Mort's pupils contracted as if he had seen something extraordinary. Rain's neck seemed to swell, as if a steam locomotive's engine was hidden in his chest, and his neck was the whistle, about to release a massive surge of heat.
"Oh no!"
Mort's expression changed, realizing the situation had turned unfavorable.
This type of sonic wave attack was nearly impossible to evade unless one's speed exceeded the speed of sound. Clearly, even if Mort were uninjured, he would still fall far short of that speed.
Unable to dodge, Mort could only brace himself.
"Haaah!"
In an instant, a powerful sonic wave struck, causing Mort's face to stretch and tremble violently, his eardrums ruptured, and his head rang with a deafening buzz.
But what truly terrified Mort was the bright light that slashed towards him.
Mort, a Black Flame Adept with the physical prowess of a Ranked Knight, reacted just in time, despite his severe injuries and Rain's level 2 Roar Strike.
Mort felt his body lighten, as if a part of him was missing, and he narrowly avoided the slash of light!
"Slap!"
A hand still swirling with black flames fell to the ground.
It was Mort's right hand, raised for the attack.
But what frightened Mort even more was the intense, burning pain at the severed end of his arm, similar to what he had felt in his abdomen earlier.
"Radiant Stone Weapon!"
"How dare you!"
(End of Chapter)"Halt!"
"Could he be the sheriff's catamite?"
"How else could he have a Radiant Stone weapon?"
"But how could a knight's catamite be this powerful? It doesn't make sense!"
Mort couldn't fathom why his opponent also possessed the extremely rare Radiant Stone weapon, as if it were specifically prepared for him.
Could all of this be a trap, a premeditated plot against him?
Across from him, Rain didn't pursue but quickly dismounted. His horse, having been struck by Rain's Roar Strike, was paralyzed by the powerful sonic wave attack.
At this moment, Mort snapped back to his senses, realizing that the previous concerns were no longer important.
He had only one thought in mind.
To flee!
The mission, the 'material', controlling the Black Flame, none of it mattered more than his own life!
In an instant, Rain made his move!
Although he had severely injured his opponent, Rain remained wary of his Black Flame. So, he had been closely observing the Black Flame adept's expression, and when the latter showed signs of cowardice and his gaze shifted nervously, Rain knew that his opponent had lost his fighting spirit.
The opportunity had presented itself!
An injury to the abdomen would undoubtedly affect the lower body's agility, and the loss of the right arm would further impact the overall coordination and balance.
This allowed Rain to quickly catch up with the fleeing Black Flame adept, Mort.
Just as Mort mustered his strength to cast a Black Flame fireball at Rain...
"Swish swish!"
A severed arm, engulfed in black flames, flew through the air, and Mort stumbled, falling to the ground.
A long, narrow wound appeared on his back, starting from the right shoulder blade and slanting down to the left waist, piercing his entire back. The wound emitted a sizzling sound.
Rain didn't stop, and the Radiant Greatsword in his hand flashed.
Mort struggled to get up, intending to continue running, but the next second, a flash of light passed by.
His head rolled off his body, and a blinding fountain of blood gushed out from his convulsing body!
A real-life human fountain!
At this moment, Rain slightly shook the Radiant Greatsword in his hand, gazing at the head that had stopped rolling. He stared at the other's face, which showed disbelief and terror, and said softly:
"Sorry, I had to go all out. Your Black Flame is too dangerous."
Clearly, Rain's words reached his opponent!
Rain saw that the other could hear him, but the severed head couldn't respond, obviously unable to utter any sound.
It was a pity; Rain didn't know what the other wanted to say, but it was likely some sort of curse. Rain didn't mind.
But in truth, Mort only wanted to say, "Damn, you went all out? You've already cut off both my arms. How am I supposed to attack you with my Black Flame?"
"Don't you know how important it is to capture me alive?"
". . ."
Mort's grumbling thoughts gradually faded as his consciousness slipped away, eventually vanishing into nothingness.
Beside them, the Night Watch members covered their ears, and those closest to Rain had blood seeping from their ears.
Rain couldn't help this; the Roar Strike was an area-of-effect attack, and the sonic waves couldn't differentiate between friend and foe, inevitably causing friendly fire.
However, including Mateo, none of the Night Watch members blamed Rain. At this moment, they felt an unprecedented sense of security!
Indeed, the Night Watch, responsible for safeguarding the public's safety during the night, felt secure.
This sense of security stemmed from the strength of their comrade!
Just now, they had all thought they might have to sacrifice themselves for the Empire.
But unexpectedly, even after witnessing Rain's two consecutive battles, their perception of his strength had been repeatedly adjusted upward!
Rain had unleashed a shocking display of power, achieving a miraculous reversal!
As the Night Watch members stood stunned, gazing at the scene before them, a familiar figure rushed down the road in the distance.
It was their superior, the Sheriff of Shining Gold Town, Hamilton.
His knight's armor was battered, and he held a broken steel shield, half of which was missing. The arm holding the shield was covered in blood, and the only thing that seemed intact was the Knight's Longsword in his right hand. He looked pitiful, having been beaten by the cloaked figure.
This caused everyone to shift their gaze from Hamilton to the beheaded cloaked figure and the unharmed Rain standing beside him.
This...
Their minds were filled with questions!
Hamilton, witnessing this scene, was just as shocked as the Night Watch members.
He slowly approached, and upon reaching the scene, he was so astounded that he couldn't speak for a while. His gaze alternated between Rain and the cloaked figure's corpse on the ground.
