Chapter 108: Teasing Children in Idle Moments
Chapter 108: Teasing Children in Idle Moments
The Hit Wizards searched through the piles of fallen leaves for a long time but only managed to find half of a shoe sole with tooth marks on it.
Biting Aracanine must have chewed on his shoe when he was kicking it earlier, damaging it, and then he must have dropped it as he ran. Or perhaps he left it there intentionally.
Hit Wizard Hard stood there, his face so gloomy that it seemed like water could drip from it. He already anticipated what he would be facing next.
Failing to catch the culprit was already a dereliction of duty, and now, with what Aurene had said earlier, he was the perfect scapegoat.
The Ministry of Magic would definitely pin all the blame on him for not capturing the fugitive, especially that pink toad...
To appease the anger of certain individuals, demotion would probably be the lightest punishment.
Hard roared, ordering the Hit Wizards to search for Aurene's traces in the vicinity. The centaurs wanted to stop them, but he intimidated them with his wand.
"That's an important criminal of the Ministry of Magic," he snarled. "If any of you dares to obstruct the search, you will be considered an accomplice!"
Under his threat, the centaurs dared not speak up, their anger simmering beneath the surface.
However, none of this mattered to Kyle anymore.
Professor McGonagall had arrived.
Her expression was grim, and Kyle had never seen her so angry. Her lips were pale and pressed tightly together.
How could a Dark Arts Defense professor try to kill a student? McGonagall never imagined that such a heinous incident could occur at Hogwarts.
Had Dumbledore forgotten his brain in a fox's den when he hired Aurene? Professor McGonagall quickly assessed the situation and then hurried over to Kyle's side. "Are you alright, Kyle? Are you injured?"
"I'm fine, Professor," Kyle said. "Thanks to the centaurs and the Hit Wizards, Aurene didn't have time to do anything before they chased him away."
The surrounding Hit Wizards were initially stunned, but then they couldn't hide their elation.
With Kyle's casual remark, the outcome of this incident shifted from their previous incompetence in letting the criminal escape to successfully rescuing a student from the dangerous Dark Wizard.
Not only were they off the hook, but they might even be considered...
Well, let's just say they avoided blame, and that's good enough.
The Hit Wizards gathered around, inquiring about Kyle's well-being like concerned neighbors, asking if he felt unwell anywhere.
Hard was the most enthusiastic. After confirming that Kyle was unharmed, he assured Kyle that the Ministry of Magic would take full responsibility for the impact and losses caused by this incident and provide appropriate compensation.
As he said this, he winked at Kyle naturally.
Kyle instantly understood, but he maintained a calm exterior.
It seemed that his flower garden could be expanded a little next year.
Unlike the Hit Wizards, Professor McGonagall clearly didn't believe Kyle's words. The surrounding Forbidden Forest had almost been turned into a wasteland, with traces of magic everywhere, and toppled trees lying all around. This chaotic scene didn't look like nothing had happened.
However, Professor McGonagall didn't say anything. She was only concerned about Kyle's safety.
At this moment, Professor Flitwick and Professor Sprout also arrived.
Seeing the scene before them, Professor Flitwick clutched his chest in dismay, while Professor Sprout's eyes reddened with unshed tears.
Afterward, Professor McGonagall shooed away the overly solicitous Hit Wizards and prepared to take Kyle back to the castle.
"By the way, Professor McGonagall," Kyle said, pointing in a certain direction. "There's a witch trapped under that tree. She's an illegal Animagus who has been disguising herself as Connor's pet and lurking by his side."
"Merlin..."
The revelation was a bit too much for Professor McGonagall to take in all at once.
They hadn't even figured out the situation with Aurene yet, and now there was an illegal Animagus to deal with. Why were there so many strange incidents at Hogwarts this year!
But now that she knew, Professor McGonagall wasn't about to let it go. She led Kyle, along with Professors Flitwick and Sprout, over to the tree where the witch was hiding.
By the time they arrived, the witch was already unconscious, and the Hit Wizards were dragging her out of the pit.
Seeing her pitiful state, Professor Flitwick sucked in a breath.
"Child, did you do this?"
"I didn't mean to," Kyle said, lowering his head. "I just didn't expect her to be so weak."
Then, Kyle briefly recounted what had happened before, starting from when he cast the first Softening Curse. There was no need to hide anything after that; he simply told the truth.
The more Professor Flitwick listened, the brighter his eyes became. He looked at Kyle as if he were a rising dueling star.
However, due to the occasion, he couldn't show too much excitement. He merely patted Kyle's arm.
He had already started considering whether or not to restart the Dueling Club.
Professor McGonagall, on the other hand, wasn't thinking so much about that. She just wanted to get Kyle back to the castle, along with the witch.
An Animagus hiding among the students was something that needed to be investigated thoroughly, and she didn't trust the Ministry of Magic to handle it properly.
Professor McGonagall found Hard and said, "This witch is related to our student. I need to take her away."
Hard frowned. He actually didn't want to let her go. After all, the witch was their only lead, and if Professor McGonagall took her away, he would only have half a shoe sole to show for his efforts.
But the problem was that the three heads of Hogwarts were all standing right there, and he had no way to refuse, especially after what had happened earlier.
Hard hesitated for a moment, then reluctantly agreed to Professor McGonagall's request.
"Just half a day, Professor McGonagall," Hard reminded her. "Tomorrow morning, we will come to Hogwarts to take her back to the Ministry of Magic."
Professor McGonagall nodded and, with a wave of her wand, took the witch away.
...
At the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest, a crowd had gathered, their necks craned as they stared intently into the depths of the forest.
"Look, Professor McGonagall is coming out!" someone suddenly shouted.
Two figures, one tall and one short, emerged from the depths of the forest.
Connor rushed out from the crowd and quickly ran to Kyle's side.
"A-are y-you okay?" she stammered, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Kyle said woodenly. "Even though I'm a ghost now, I feel fine."
"Ah!?"
Connor's eyes widened, and tears began to flow again.
"Don't talk nonsense!" Professor McGonagall scolded Kyle, wiping the little girl's tears and rolling her eyes. "Look at him carefully. Does he look like a ghost to you?"
