Chapter 108: A Lifesaving Favor (First Update)
Chapter 108: A Lifesaving Favor (First Update)
"Forget it, let's finish the task first before eating!"
Using a levitation charm, Jerry gently placed the tray into the box space. Then, with a summoning charm, he called forth Quirrell's Advanced Antidote and placed it with a thud in front of Tony and Nick.
"Alright, can you take the potion first? Don't you know that staying up late is bad for children's health?"
"What potion?"
Tony looked bewildered.
"It's an antidote that might cure your palladium poisoning. This Miss Wizard offered it to us out of the goodness of her heart!"
Nick explained.
"Mainly, I think Mr. Stark is a great person, and it would be a real shame for him to die like this!"
Jerry nodded in agreement.
"Um, thank you, Miss Wizard, but I don't think your potion will help. I've tried every possible combination of elements, and there's nothing on Earth that can replace palladium to cure my poisoning!"
Tony was a confident man, and perhaps a bit arrogant. He believed that if his own abilities couldn't solve the palladium poisoning, how could a child possibly save him?
Although, she did seem to have some impressive superpowers.
Before Jerry could respond, Nick glared at Tony with a touch of sarcasm.
"I can tell you that you haven't tried everything yet!"
"You're going to die anyway, so why not give it a try? Besides, I spent a lot of time and used many precious herbs to brew this antidote. I have some confidence in it!"
Jerry pushed the Advanced Antidote on the table a bit closer to Tony.
Tony picked up the potion, gazed at the amber-colored liquid inside, and recalled the magic that could alter matter. After a moment of hesitation, he finally uncorked the bottle and downed the potion in one gulp.
As soon as the potion hit his mouth, a warm sensation surged from his abdomen and spread throughout his body, reaching every organ and limb.
The green palladium marks that had been gradually consuming his body vanished in an instant.
"Ouch!"
Suddenly, Tony felt a sharp pain in his neck. Black Widow had taken a palladium poisoning test machine and pricked his neck.
"Palladium content: 0. The poisoning is completely gone!"
"Is it really that simple?"
Tony, still disbelieving, took the test machine from Black Widow, manually removed the gauntlet from his arm, and pricked his finger. Seeing the same result, a complex expression crossed his face.
He had thought he was doomed, like a cancer patient, and had donated all his collections. He had started to give up, even playing around with his new secretary (Black Widow) to provoke Pepper and make her give up on him to avoid future heartache. He had even given one of his beloved Iron Man suits to his friend Rhodey.
Now, it seemed he had been hasty!
But who wouldn't want to live? Overall, he was very happy.
Though he had struggled so hard to find a cure, and a child had managed to solve it so easily, this left him feeling somewhat defeated.
However, he was deeply grateful to Jerry for saving his life.
He had already given Pepper control of the vast Stark Industries. If he had really died, Pepper might have married someone else, and his beloved company would have belonged to another man.
"Wizard, um, Miss Wizard, thank you so much for saving me. If you ever need my help in the future, feel free to contact me. However, I have an urgent matter that I need to attend to right now!"
Now that he was no longer in danger of dying, Tony couldn't let Pepper go to someone else.
So, Tony felt he should immediately fly back to find Pepper and explain everything to her, hoping to win back her love.
"Hold it, you can't leave just yet. Although the poison has been neutralized, if you don't find a replacement for palladium, using the Iron Man suit will cause you to be poisoned again. I doubt Miss Wizard has many of those potions!"
Just as Iron Man was about to get up, Nick Fury pressed him back down.
Jerry also raised his hand at the right moment:
"Indeed, the materials needed to brew that advanced antidote are hard to come by. I only have one bottle left, and even if I were to brew more, it would take a long time!"
He still had a few bottles of the advanced antidote in his storage space, but he couldn't just give them all to Tony. He wasn't a philanthropist, after all.
Giving one potion was a life-saving act, but giving a second or third would be like adding flowers to brocade—much less valuable compared to the first.
He couldn't afford to lose money on such a deal.
Besides, since the Avengers and Iron Man were fine, it meant that Tony would eventually find a solution.
In other words, Tony wouldn't really die from the poison, even without his potion. He had just taken advantage of the situation to help.
If he kept providing potions, it might prevent Tony from researching a fundamental solution, and then Iron Man might disappear.
Without Iron Man, when Thanos' army arrived, they would lose a key player.
Tony was taken aback. After a moment of calm reflection, he finally sat back down.
If he activated the Iron Man suit now, the small Arc Reactor in his chest would surely start pumping palladium into his body again, putting him back on a death countdown.
The feeling of a ticking clock on your life was terrible, and one experience was enough.
"Your father, Mr. Howard, left you some things before he died. I believe they could help you find a suitable replacement element."
"So, I think it's best for you to return to your mansion and study them thoroughly!"
As Nick Fury spoke, the dozen or so agents quickly surrounded Tony.
"Alright!"
Tony knew he couldn't use the Iron Man suit, and he wasn't a match for these elite agents. Moreover, Nick Fury's words made sense.
If he wanted to continue being Iron Man and flying around in the Iron Man suit, he needed to find a substitute for palladium.
It looked like he would have to wait a while before explaining things to Pepper.
"Alright, can we go back now?"
Jerry stood up and urged them.
He had no choice. If his Nimbus 2000 could fly faster than a supersonic jet, he would have flown back himself. The Nimbus 2000's top speed was around 200 kilometers per hour, and flying from Los Angeles to New York would take over ten hours. If Hass and Elsa found him missing, it would cause some trouble.
He would have to find time to learn apparition, or figure out how to make a portkey and establish a Floo Network.
Relying solely on a flying broom, even if he bought the fastest Firebolt, wouldn't match the speed of a jet or the Iron Man suit.
If his memory served him right, the Firebolt's top speed was around 250 kilometers per hour.
