Chapter 1077: Germa Kingdom
Chapter 1077: Germa Kingdom
What was there for him to remain calm about? He had been calm!
What right did he have to act so composed?!
He’d been calm before simply because he damn well didn’t know about this situation! In fact, he’d even been smug, thinking the higher-ups hadn’t reported him – maybe they’d even forgotten about him.
Well, looks like they’d been waiting for him right here now!
Lucius Kro chuckled. "Well, it’s like this, Kuro. Starting today, Old Man’s officially stepping down. From now on, it’s all on you."
"Why don’t you… wait a bit longer?"
Kuro dryly replied, "Look, the banquet lasts seven days. While it’s technically a birthday celebration, if you step down now, it’ll feel more like a victory party, which might bring bad luck. Why not wait a little more?"
"Ah, Old Man wanted to wait too, but the higher-ups wouldn’t allow it. This newspaper’s proof."
Lucius Kro pouted as he spoke. "I expect Old Man to receive the news by daylight."
So this whole thing was a celebration for him?!
Kuro shot a despairing glance toward the balcony. The lively commotion from below continued, but now it grated on his ears with unbearable irritation.
If Gramps received the news tomorrow, wouldn’t he immediately send the official document? Then Kuro would inherit the Admiral title the next day!
Everyone understood the unspoken rules about faction leadership – there was no formal confirmation without documents. Once Gramps stepped down, Kuro would assume the position. He’d technically already taken over this morning. The only remaining formal document would be for the Admiral role itself.
So were these remaining days meant to be his celebration?!
Wasn’t this the definition of hoisting oneself with one’s own petard?!
This kind of thing required discretion! Making such a lavish spectacle would cause misunderstandings!
To make matters worse, this was Gramps’ birthday celebration. Kuro couldn’t even say outright he didn’t want it. The invitations were already sent. Taking it back now would be like shattering his own reputation!
Yet now…
"What kind of situation is this!" Kuro gritted his teeth, muttering bitterly.
"Cheer up, Kuro! You’re an Admiral now!" Garp laughed heartily. "Being an Admiral’s great!"
Kuro twitched his lips, trying to force a smile to hide his falling tears.
Tonight’s wine felt particularly difficult to swallow.
…
North Blue. A certain sea area. A massive fleet formation – dozens of warships shaped like snail shells supporting castles on their backs – formed a miniature kingdom. Now they were encircled by ten heavily armed warships. Though smaller individually than the snail-shell vessels, these warships’ combined firepower completely surrounded the castles.
Inside the encircled fleet, battle cries echoed.
North Blue wasn’t unaccustomed to foreign rule.
The Germa Kingdom had once achieved the legendary feat of unifying the North Blue for 66 days. Though stripped of its right to attend the World Meeting by the World Government, its fearsome reputation endured. Who in the North Blue hadn’t trembled at its name? Yet now, this feared kingdom was under invasion!
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Gunfire and cannon blasts mixed with the crisp clanging of steel in combat.
The Germa Kingdom’s emotionless clone soldiers were formidable. Moving like machines, their physical prowess exceeded ordinary soldiers by orders of magnitude. Without relying on Haki, their sheer bodily strength and machine-like precision made them relentless. Against regular soldiers, they’d be unstoppable.
But these weren’t ordinary soldiers – these were from Dressrosa!
Hiss!
A soldier swung his saber at a Germa soldier, who didn’t even use a weapon. The Germa soldier blocked the strike with his bare arm. His durable body halted the blade, which pierced skin and flesh but lodged in the arm.
Bang!
The Germa soldier kicked the attacker’s chest, sending him flying backward. The soldier twisted mid-air, landed on his feet, and fixed the impassive Germa soldier with a steady glare as he pulled the blade free.
"They’re just like Vice Admiral Kashii’s Dogleg Squadron!" the soldier gritted his teeth. "Troublesome, but at least they don’t use Haki."
Another soldier happened by, raising his rifle to fire. "Hey, you scared?!" he called out, twisting his head.
"Scared? Of course I’m scared! That kick hurt like hell!" the soldier winced, showing his teeth. "But I’m not afraid to die – I believe in the Justice Faith!"
Dressrosa’s soldiers feared pain, hardship, and exhaustion. But if it served the cause of justice, they’d face death without hesitation!
"Come on, we’ll take this wicked Germa Kingdom down! I read The Sora Chronicles too!"
The soldier adjusted his stance, preparing to charge. Suddenly, a swirling gust blasted past them, blowing their hair tips back.
Boom!
A violent pressure wave exploded, sending clustered Germa soldiers flying.
"Cyrus, our officer!" the soldiers shouted.
Charging forward was Cyrus himself, clad in full armor with his head exposed, swinging his massive sword. Each strike unleashed pressure waves that lifted Germa soldiers off their feet.
His previous gladiator outfit had been retired when David took power. That skimpy attire was no longer fashionable – the new Dressrosa at least ensured soldiers could wear proper clothing.
Rebecca, likewise armored, fought from another direction, swinging her greatsword with fierce martial spirit.
Ratatat!
From another flank, a maid in a uniform transformed her arms into machine guns, clenching a cigarette while blazing away – sparks practically flying from her barrels.
"The King needs me, so I’ll fight my hardest!" she shouted, increasing her rate of fire.
Baby-5 – once Donquixote Doflamingo’s head maid, now serving David – had joined Dressrosa’s forces after her former master’s fall. For this campaign, David had brought her along to bolster their combat strength.
Beyond the regular soldiers and officers, Dressrosa had elite fighters. Amid the Germa soldiers’ assault, a man in armor wielding a Meteor Hammer smashed through their ranks. Each swing of the massive weapon sent ten clone soldiers flying.
Teigu Reipante, former captain of the Dressrosa Royal Army, had served under King Riku loyally. During Doflamingo’s reign, he’d cleverly retained his position until King Riku’s return. Though he’d never seen that return, he’d pledged himself to King David instead, embracing the Justice Faith.
"For justice!"
Teigu roared, spinning his Meteor Hammer like a discus, clearing space around him before bringing it crashing down toward the enemy ranks.
Bang!
The hammer’s descent halted midair with a thunderous boom.
A green-clad figure appeared beneath the massive weapon, catching it single-handedly.
Clang!
Rebecca’s sword met a blue figure, the blocking hand crackling with electricity.
Smack!
Cyrus’ strike froze as a red-clad figure stomped his blade down, smirking arrogantly.
"You really think…"
The figure spoke slowly, "Who gave you the cowardice to invade the Germa Kingdom?!"
