Chapter 1076: Notifying Your Demise
Chapter 1076: Notifying Your Demise
"Dika? Are you there?"
Dewain turned and called out the name of his subordinate. But his voice vanished into the darkness like a stone into the sea, with no response.
Dewain took two steps back, his back bumping into another subordinate. This one was still there, but he had also sensed something was wrong and began to look around warily.
The extinguished lights flickered once.
In the next moment, a chill wind seemed to sweep through. Dewain instinctively raised his arm to shield himself, his eyelids closing briefly. But in the blink of an eye, when he turned around, the subordinate who had been behind him was gone without a trace.
Dewain was stunned.
Both disappearances had happened in an instant, from the lights going out to the first person vanishing, no more than two seconds had passed.
Using two seconds to make someone vanish silently right in front of him was something Dewain, even as a Psychic Duelist, doubted he could do, let alone against other Psychic Duelists.
If the first disappearance could be attributed to a sudden ambush, the second person had vanished right under his nose. It felt as if Death itself had snatched the person away from right in front of him.
Dewain's heart raced, and his Duel Disk was already activated, scanning the area warily.
In the next moment, he sensed something.
"There!"
He shouted, not even looking as he drew the top card from his Deck and swiftly inserted it into his Duel Disk.
"Activate Magic Card 'Fireball'!"
The green card's image was projected into the air, and a fireball immediately shot out from the Magic Card. The flame cut through the darkness, leaving a brilliant trail as it aimed for a silver figure in the shadows.
But the figure stood calmly, watching the fireball approach, feeling the intense heat, and instead of showing any fear, a slight smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Then he raised one arm.
Yes, just one arm, reaching forward, fingers spread, as if using his palm as a shield.
Dewain then witnessed a scene that left him utterly shaken.
The fireball struck the figure's palm and, as if instantly neutralized, came to a dead stop.
It was as if he had caught it with his bare hand!
Dewain felt his jaw hit the floor.
Reasonably, although he wasn't the strongest Psychic Duelist, he was certainly one of the best. The power of his materialized card, if it hit directly, was more than enough to reduce a person to ashes.
Yet, the fireball he had launched, with such destructive force, had been caught with a bare hand!
And this person was supposed to be the Public Security Bureau's chief, Godwin?
Dewain's pupils dilated, his eyes widening.
As the head of the city's largest law enforcement agency, Godwin was a key target of the Eden Movement's investigations. Dewain thought he knew this man well, but he had never heard that the chief possessed such abilities.
"Chief Godwin" held the fireball in his hand, keeping the swirling flames at bay for a few seconds.
Then, his hand clenched tightly.
Crack.
The fireball disintegrated into ashes.
As if it had been extinguished by his bare hand.
Dewain's shock grew. Even as a Psychic Duelist, they could only use extraordinary powers through Duel Monster cards, which required a Duel Disk. But catching a fireball with bare hands? What kind of ability was this?
Psychic powers?
However, Dewain didn't know that, at that moment, a silent magician in an invisible spirit form was floating nearby, frowning and shaking her head.
She didn't understand why her master had decided to put on this show today. If she had been allowed to simply blast the fireball away or use a defensive spell, it would have been much easier and less draining.
Youxuan casually flicked his wrist and said nonchalantly, "Dewain, the leader of the Eden Movement, right?"
Dewain struggled to control his emotions, not letting his shock show, and feigned calmness. "I wondered who it was. Isn't this the Public Security Bureau's Satellite Zone chief, Godwin?"
He deliberately emphasized the words "Satellite Zone."
Yes, Godwin was born in the Satellite Zone. But this fact is an absolute secret even within the Public Security Bureau. If it ever got out, it would cause a huge uproar.
Contempt for the Satellite Zone's scum is a basic consensus among all social classes in this city. Given this, the revelation that a man from the Satellite Zone's underclass is at the very pinnacle of the city's power structure, as the head of the Public Security Bureau, would be a scandal of seismic proportions.
If the news ever broke, Godwin’s position as bureau chief would be in jeopardy.
Dewain had long used his intelligence channels to uncover this secret and had been leveraging it against Godwin ever since.
This is why, despite the Eden Movement being a group of superpowered thugs operating right in the heart of the city, with members often engaging in outrageous behavior, the Public Security Bureau has always turned a blind eye and taken no action against them.
Being from the Satellite Zone is Godwin’s biggest weakness, at least that’s what Dewain believes. As long as he holds this leverage, the Public Security Bureau is no threat to him.
Of course, he wouldn’t reveal this information lightly, because a secret is only a weapon when it’s held by a select few. If he were to expose Godwin and bring him down, the next bureau chief might not be as easy to manipulate.
“So, what brings the Satellite Zone’s top cop to my place in the middle of the night?” Dewain asked with a casual tone.
“Nothing much, just passing by and thought I’d stop by for a look.”
Youxuan walked to the window and looked down.
“You’ve done a great job with this place. It’s really shaping up. I’ve noticed you’ve been accelerating your recruitment efforts lately. Planning something?”
He glanced at Dewain.
“Your Psychic Duelist army plan?”
“Sir, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Dewain raised his hands in an innocent gesture and smiled.
“I just provide a home for those who are outcast and homeless, nothing more.”
Youxuan replied coolly, “And part of your ‘home’ includes brainwashing the people you take in, setting up keywords to control them like puppets, right?”
Dewain’s expression changed.
This was the top secret of the Eden Movement, his ultimate trump card. He had secretly brainwashed his members, making them absolute followers who would obey his every command with the right keywords.
But even within the movement, this was the highest-level secret. How could Godwin know?
“Black Rose Witch, Shizukana Yozora. She’s the ace in your Eden Movement, the strongest Psychic Duelist, right?
You should know her background. Her father is Senator Shizukana Eiyu. If he found out his daughter is here, brainwashed and turned into a psychic weapon, what do you think would happen?”
Dewain chuckled.
“I built the Eden Movement from scratch, and we’ve come this far. If you think I’d be afraid of just one senator, you’re underestimating me, Chief Godwin.”
He paused, then continued with a smile.
“But since you’ve come here and said all this, it must mean one of two things.
Either the Public Security Bureau hasn’t found concrete evidence of our experiments, or you’re not ready to openly confront us, right?”
He laughed and adjusted his hair, trying to look suave.
“Out with it, Chief. What are your terms?”
But Youxuan’s smile was even broader.
“No terms. I just needed to hear those words. I’ve recorded them.”
Dewain’s face darkened.
“Godwin, you should know that such a recording proves nothing and can’t be used as evidence.”
“True, but I’m curious about what Shizukana Yozora and the rest of your Eden Movement members would think if they heard this.
Oh, and there’s one more thing. I’m not here to negotiate terms, just to deliver a message.”
Dewain asked, “What message?”
Youxuan slowly revealed his Duel Disk.
“The message of your impending death.”
