Chapter 107: The Appearance of the Slender Ghost
Chapter 107: The Appearance of the Slender Ghost
"Father Andrew, Father Andrew, something's happened," a young boy rushed over, out of breath.
Qin Muye had been in Ackerman for three days now. His deeds of killing the perverted murderer outside town and exorcising the Pumpkin Head evil spirit had already spread throughout the town.
Over the past two days, many curious people had come to see him. Once his feats were confirmed, the townspeople's admiration for Qin Muye reached its peak.
"What's wrong? If something happened, you should call the police, not me. Why are you looking for me?" Qin Muye stood up and looked at the young boy. In such a situation, if something really happened, the logical thing to do would be to call the police.
The middle-aged man was panting heavily, "Father, it's bad. Katie has been taken by the Slender Ghost."
"???" Qin Muye was confused. Were the town's terrifying spirits this stubborn? The Pumpkin Head evil spirit had only been exorcised a short while ago, and now the Slender Ghost was daring to appear.
He vaguely remembered the Slender Ghost from his past life. It was some kind of urban legend, described as a tall, slender figure that liked to grab children and lead them into the forest to kill them.
"Are you sure? Is it possible that Katie just ran away or something? You should call the police first, not me. After all, the Law Enforcement Bureau would be better equipped to find her," Qin Muye advised.
He thought it was possible that it was the Slender Ghost, but who knew? Maybe the boy was lying.
"No, it's true. I saw Katie being taken away by the Slender Ghost with my own eyes," the boy said, his voice tinged with fear. "It had long, slender limbs, a face without features, and it looked like a spider. It was wearing a suit. I saw Katie being taken away by it."
Qin Muye's pupils glowed with a crimson crystalline light as he examined the boy carefully. A thread of energy was surrounding the boy, different from the one on Andy, but it confirmed that this was a mark.
The boy wasn't lying, but the question was how they had attracted the Slender Ghost. From what he could see, as long as they didn't provoke it, they usually wouldn't die.
"It seems you were involved in this, too. Do you mind telling me more?" Qin Muye sat back down and asked the boy to calm down.
"Last night, Katie and I were on our way home. She found some torn pages from somewhere and said we were going to play a thrilling game. Only after we finished did she tell me it was a ritual to summon the Slender Ghost. This morning, when I went to wait for her to go to school, I saw Katie and the Slender Ghost leave. I was so scared that I didn't dare follow them."
"Father Andrew, you must save Katie. They can't have gone far yet."
The boy said this with urgency.
"So, this just happened, right?" Qin Muye narrowed his eyes.
"Yes, Father," the boy replied, his voice filled with pleading.
"Alright, if that's the case, let's get going," Qin Muye stood up and said, "Leave half the people at the church. This might be a witch's plan. If they dare to attack while I'm gone, detain them."
"Also, notify the mayor and the Law Enforcement Bureau to assist."
After saying this, Qin Muye left with Tian Qi and half of the Gospel Goblins.
About ten minutes later, three police cars came roaring up. The mayor and the head of the Law Enforcement Bureau were in the lead.
"Father Andrew, we received a call from your congregation and rushed over. But with so many people, the police cars might not fit everyone," the mayor said, leaning out of the car.
"Me and this young man, what's your name?" Qin Muye opened the car door and got in, motioning for Tian Qi to follow. He then waved the young boy over.
The boy was a bit nervous, as this was different from what he had imagined. He had envisioned Qin Muye and himself heroically defeating the Slender Ghost, not involving the Law Enforcement Bureau.
"My name is Havel, Father," the boy said as he got into the car.
Qin Muye nodded. "Alright, you can guide us. They can keep up."
Although Havel was a bit confused, he did as he was told. The police cars soon started moving, and the fifty Gospel Goblins effortlessly followed. The townspeople were dumbfounded by the sight of the red-robed congregation members keeping up with the cars without any sign of fatigue.
"Are these people from the Inquisition?" the mayor asked, probing a bit.
"People are people, and gods are gods. This is our agreement, Mr. Mayor," Qin Muye implied that he would not disclose the information.
The mayor laughed, "Hahaha, I forgot, I forgot. I'm really sorry, Father Andrew. My curiosity got the better of me again."
He covered his true thoughts with a hearty laugh, showing no embarrassment.
"Never mind, but I hope Mr. Mayor will not voice your curiosity next time. Otherwise, I might also have some curiosity," Qin Muye was not going to be swayed by this and indicated that he would not hold back his curiosity if the mayor continued.
"Everyone has curiosity," the mayor vaguely brushed the matter aside, implying that they should not cross each other's boundaries.
However, Qin Muye did not believe him. If it were truly a matter of not crossing boundaries, there would not have been this probing.
Fortunately, the mayor was well-versed in the art of political speech and quickly steered the conversation back to the Slender Ghost.
He shared some intelligence about the Slender Ghost with Qin Muye, as if the previous incident had never happened.
Soon, the cars arrived at the edge of the forest on the outskirts of Ackerman.
"Father Andrew, the police cars probably can't go any further. We'll have to walk," the mayor said.
"Alright, but there's one important thing. Why do you know the Slender Ghost is here?" Qin Muye asked, looking at Havel.
Havel had been directing the police cars as if he had a firsthand experience of the Slender Ghost's path. Was that possible?
He had said he was too scared to follow, so he couldn't know the Slender Ghost's route.
"I can see some images, from a very high perspective. So this might be the Slender Ghost's path," Havel said, sounding genuinely frightened, his voice tinged with a sob.
"Can you still see it now?" Qin Muye didn't dwell on this, increasingly convinced that this was a diversionary tactic. It was too coincidental otherwise.
However, he trusted the capabilities of the Gospel Goblins. They were a specialized elite force of 50 epic-level creatures, the most powerful among Qin Muye's elite troops.
"Yes, Katie is still alive. She's just hanging there. We still have a chance," Havel quickly replied.
"Mr. Mayor, would you like to come with us?" Qin Muye extended an invitation, worried that the mayor might be behind this and wanting to take him along.
"Is that a good idea? Well, if Father Andrew and the congregation are here, it should be fine," the mayor seemed to want to prove his innocence, understanding the implications.
"No need to make it complicated. Leave ten people to protect us on the way back to the church. The rest can follow Havel's directions. They are faster, and I think someone is preparing a surprise for us at the church," Qin Muye decided not to go, trusting the Gospel Goblins. Capturing the person alive would be better, which would require Tian Qi's intervention.
As for the Slender Ghost? Frankly, could 40 Gospel Goblins not handle it?
Was the Slender Ghost a god of war? From its abducting style, its combat power was far inferior to the Pumpkin Head evil spirit. Why waste time? It would be better to watch the drama unfold back at the church.
The Gospel Goblins picked up Havel and, without regard for the mayor's reaction, 40 of them swiftly entered the forest.
"Mr. Mayor, rest assured. You should see the Slender Ghost in its black suit at my church soon," Qin Muye led the way back to the car, signaling that they could return.
As for Qin Muye going himself? He had subordinates to do the job, and it would be foolish to go himself.
The mayor's expression changed slightly but quickly masked it, then got back into the car, "Since Father Andrew is confident, that's the best."
As for Havel, the mayor left the Law Enforcement Bureau and a few enforcers to support him. There shouldn't be any major issues.
