Chapter 107: Ruins of the Phoenix God
Chapter 107: Ruins of the Phoenix God
"I win! What a fun duel!"
Yugi Muto had a satisfied smile on his face.
"But I think it's about time we headed back," Yugi said reluctantly as he put away his Duel Disk. "It'll be dawn soon. If we're found in the restricted area of the abandoned dormitory, we'll be in big trouble."
This was the first time Yugi had dueled with elemental spirits, and he was reluctant to stop.
"Well, I think it doesn't matter anymore," You Xuan reminded him. "Only the two of us were probably transported to the Spirit World. Now, what do you think the others will do?"
Yugi paused, realizing the implication.
Of course, Hayato and the others would seek help from the school. In that case, they might have been discovered soon after they were transported here, even before dawn.
Yugi thought for a moment. He recalled that trespassing into restricted areas could result in expulsion, which was a serious matter. However, even with that in mind, it seemed too late to do anything about it now.
So Yugi thought for a moment and reopened his Duel Disk.
"Oh well, let's have one more duel before we go back."
Yes, since they were already here, they might as well continue dueling.
The group of spirits, who were already exhausted from the previous duels: ". . ."
Another duel?
Is this Duel King made of cards? Why isn't he getting tired?
"Ahem, let's leave the dueling for next time. Before we go, there's somewhere we need to visit." You Xuan interrupted him.
Yugi: "Huh?"
The place You Xuan wanted to visit was, of course, the ruins of the Phoenix God.
The reason they had entered this dimension from the abandoned dormitory was still unknown, and You Xuan didn't know if they would have another opportunity to come back. Since they were already here, it made sense to explore the vast ruins of the Phoenix God. How could they not at least take a look around?
The village, forgotten by time, lay silently in the dense forest.
You Xuan and Yugi made their way through the thick forest and approached the village. The broken walls and overgrown courtyards exuded a desolate and lonely atmosphere. The sunlight filtering through the treetops cast a dappled pattern on the dilapidated buildings, creating long shadows.
"This looks so cool!"
Yugi looked up in awe at the huge, ancient sculpture of the Phoenix God in the center of the village, his eyes gleaming with curiosity.
The statue, weathered by countless storms, had lost its luster, and the surrounding area was overgrown with weeds and wildflowers that swayed gently in the breeze.
"It's as if it's trying to tell me something."
Yugi slowly walked forward and reached out his hand towards the statue.
You Xuan stood quietly by, observing without saying a word.
Yes, he didn't sense or hear anything. To him, it was just an abandoned, broken village with a crumbling statue.
Bringing Yugi along had indeed been a good idea. Yugi possessed an incredible "Spirit Affinity" talent, a skill that allowed him to detect even the faintest traces of elemental spirit consciousness.
You Xuan remained silent, not wanting to disturb Yugi, but he silently cheered him on in his heart.
Come on, use your unbeatable kingly power to imprint a 'Nephthys, the Phoenix God' card!
It would be even better if he could get a full deck and a Phoenix God elemental spirit as well!
Boom!
Just as Yugi was about to approach the statue, the ground in front of him suddenly exploded. A blinding flash of light and a gust of wind knocked Yugi off his feet, sending him tumbling backward.
"Kuriboh!"
Winged Chestnut Ball asked with concern.
"I'm fine, partner. What's going on?"
Yugi stood up, confused by the sudden turn of events.
A figure in a black hooded robe descended from the sky like a superhero and landed on the altar in front of the statue.
The card was Nephthys, the Phoenix God!
"Stop him!" You Xuan ordered.
The two spirits flew into action.
But then, a pillar of green light shot into the sky, a dazzling column of emerald radiance piercing the clouds. The overwhelming energy forced the spirits to retreat temporarily. It was as if the sky had been pierced, as a hexagram appeared beneath the man's feet, the energy flowing towards the card in his hand.
It was the power of Orichalcos.
Immediately afterward, the ancient statue of the Phoenix God shone with a golden light, as if it had been coated in a layer of golden armor. The burning golden light was released from the massive statue, as if the card in the man's hand was a bottomless black hole, drawing the golden radiance into it with irresistible gravity.
In just an instant, the golden light was absorbed into the card in his hand. The statue of the Phoenix God seemed to dim even further.
The green light gradually faded. The black-robed man lowered his arm and frowned at the Phoenix God card in his hand.
"Just some residual power, it seems," the man muttered to himself.
"What have you done?!" Yugi exclaimed, jumping to his feet. "Who are you?"
The man glanced at him sideways, his gaze sweeping over their red and yellow school uniforms.
"So, the duelists from the real world turn out to be students of Duel Academy," the man said. "I've done nothing but seek the spirit of Nephthys, the Phoenix God.
But it seems she isn't here. Even in this tribe, there's only a lingering trace of the Phoenix God's power from days long past."
You Xuan guessed what was happening. The man held a "Nephthys, the Phoenix God" card from the outside world, but it had no spirit within it. He was searching for the Phoenix God's spirit, intending to use this card as a vessel and harness the power of Orichalcos to capture and seal the deity.
Furthermore, even without activating the card "Orichalcos Barrier" in a duel, the energy this man had just unleashed was stronger than the aura the thief, Keith, had displayed when using the barrier.
He seemed like a tough opponent.
"Duel Monsters should be companions to duelists!" Yugi exclaimed angrily. "The relationship between duelists and their cards should be based on mutual trust and support, not one of subjugation through force!"
"Oh?"
The man sized him up.
"So that's how it is. Indeed, there seem to be quite a few naive kids like you."
Yugi frowned. "What did you say?"
"Duelists may treat their monsters as companions, but the monsters may not reciprocate the duelist's feelings," the man said indifferently. "In the end, winning is all that matters in a duel.
As a leader, one only needs absolute authority. There's no need to be on friendly terms with one's servants."
"I can't agree with that!" Yugi declared. "If that's how you feel, then let's settle this with a duel!"
"It doesn't matter. That was my intention anyway."
The man had already drawn out his Duel Disk, his tone cold.
"Since you've intruded into the realm of the gods, I never intended to let you leave. I, Shyru, one of the Three Swords of Doma, will be your escort to the next world."
The uniquely shaped Duel Disk of Doma unfolded with a clatter, its indicator lights glowing.
"You two, come at me together."
