Chapter 1065: Detention Center
Chapter 1065: Detention Center
New Domino City, Detention Center.
Two security officers walked with stern expressions, each gripping one of Yusei Fudo's arms. Yusei, flanked by the two men, calmly observed his surroundings as they walked.
They passed through a long, metallic corridor and arrived at a vast courtyard. In the center of the courtyard, narrow walkways crisscrossed, and on all sides, the walls were lined with small, cell-like compartments. Countless prisoners were confined behind the bars of these cells.
A common feature on each prisoner's face was a small yellow mark.
This mark, which all inmates had to bear upon entering the prison, was similar to the ancient practice of branding criminals. It served to inform everyone that the person was a convicted criminal, lower in status. In Yusei's case, the mark was just below his left eye.
This mark was more advanced than a simple brand, containing a tracking chip. Any prisoner marked with it could be traced by the Security Bureau, no matter how far they fled.
Initially, the mark was meant for tracking, but over time, it became a personal symbol for Yusei. After a while, it even grew on him.
But his situation was nothing compared to his friend, Crow Hogan, who used the Black Feather Deck. Crow's face was a canvas of marks, almost every possible spot branded. To the uninitiated, it might look like the work of a mischievous child's abstract art.
The guards led him into the detention center and then left. Yusei quietly observed his surroundings for a moment before he heard someone call his name.
"Yusei!"
He turned to see a burly man with a muscular build and blue hair, a hairstyle that suggested he was well-versed in dueling.
Shin Koori, a former professional duelist. Yusei had played a game of Duel Monsters with him as soon as he arrived in prison, and as is often the case, they had become friends.
Shin asked, "Why were you also transferred here?"
They had not been in this detention center before; they were transferred here earlier that morning.
Yusei looked around and asked, "This place is—"
Shin replied, "This is where long-term prisoners are held. It's different from the temporary holding facility we were in before."
Shin scratched his head, looking troubled. "Long-term detention is no joke. You won't be getting out in less than six months."
A young inmate, whom Shin had befriended in prison, muttered, "The talk of sentences is just a formality.
In reality, once you're in here, how many actually get out alive?"
"Huh?"
Shin and Yusei's expressions turned grim.
The young inmate continued, his voice filled with despair, "My cellmate said that about a year ago, his sentence was down to just a few days. But as the release date approached, it kept getting delayed.
Three days, ten days, a month—it's been almost a year, and he still hasn't been released."
Shin's face darkened, and he clenched his fists in anger. "Damn it, what's going on? We were supposed to be assigned to unpaid labor.
If everything had gone according to plan, we should have been released in a few days."
Yusei remained silent.
Shin sighed and turned to Yusei. "Be careful, Yusei. I've heard about this long-term detention center.
The warden here is named Hawk Roost, and he's a dangerous man. He has a volatile temper and a cruel nature, often taking out his frustrations on the prisoners."
"Try to avoid him. Don't provoke him, or you’ll regret it, Yusei."
Yusei nodded. "I understand. Thanks for the warning, Shin."
"."
At that moment, the conversation between the two was being recorded by the surveillance cameras inside the detention center. The footage was transmitted to the large screen in the monitoring room.
A broad-shouldered, dark-skinned man was lounging in a chair in the monitoring room. He looked unkempt, with a thick beard, and the sleeves of his prison uniform were rolled up to his shoulders, revealing his muscular arms. His bald head was topped with a cap that seemed too small for him.
This was the notorious Warden Hawk Roost they were talking about.
While watching the surveillance footage, the warden was also... pulling his nose hairs.
Yes, you read that right—pulling his nose hairs. If there were such a thing as superpowers in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, this Warden Hawk Roost would likely be a nose hair mutant. In the anime, he seemed to be constantly pulling his nose hairs, as if they had an extraordinary regenerative ability and never ran out.
"Tch."
The warden's mood worsened as he watched Yusei and Shin on the screen. He blew a breath, scattering the nose hair he had just pulled.
"The trash from Satellite is a Dragon Marked? What a joke."
The legend of the Red Dragon was well-known in this world, and the warden had heard of it.
According to the legend, the Red Dragon was a deity that had been protecting humanity for generations. Occasionally, it would choose a human to act as its proxy, bestowing upon them a Dragon Mark to harness its power and fight against evil.
A day earlier, the Security Bureau headquarters had informed the warden that Yusei Fudo might be a Dragon Marked.
The warden had exploded with anger.
How could that be?
The trash from Satellite, the lowest of the low in the entire city, the kind of people even the most down-and-out citizens would look down upon—
How could such a person be a Dragon Marked?
The warden couldn’t accept it.
However, the Security Bureau soon issued further instructions.
"Take him out."
The deputy director of the Security Bureau, a short, pale man with a clownish appearance, spoke with a sinister tone.
"This is the director's order. But don't make too much of a fuss. Try to be discreet, and make it look like he disappeared without a trace."
The clown paused, narrowing his eyes.
"Or to be more specific, don’t let Jack Atlas, the king of New Domino City, find out. Got it?
If I ever discover that the news has reached the king's ears... heh heh heh, you know the consequences."
The warden shuddered under the deputy's gaze and quickly stood at attention.
"Yes, sir! I’ll make sure to satisfy you."
So, this piece of Satellite trash not only might be a Dragon Marked but also had a connection to Jack Atlas, the supreme ruler of New Domino City.
The king actually cared about the life of such scum.
The warden gritted his teeth, growing angrier the more he thought about it.
Of course, few people knew that the city's Duel King, Jack Atlas, had also been born in Satellite and was personally discovered by Chief Godwin of Domino City.
The warden stared at Yusei on the screen for a moment, then let out a cold snort.
Well, if the director wants him dead, then I might as well do something about it, right?
They say Dragon Marked are chosen by the heavens.
Heh heh, I’ll show you that even a Dragon Marked is still just trash.
