Chapter 1050: Fishman Gunner
Chapter 1050: Fishman Gunner
In the end, Niwei didn't agree to bet on the Royal Guardian with Youxuan, leaving Youxuan a bit disappointed.
It was a pity, as the Royal Guardian was still quite overpowered in this early Synchro environment. Unfortunately, it was a non-sellable item from the outside world, exclusive to the Enforcement Squad, and even if you had the money, you couldn't buy it.
Moreover, the Royal Guardian's effects seemed to complement Youxuan's own strategies. However, it was just a Level 1 monster, so it didn't matter much. On one hand, Niwei might have had a poor Duel experience with Youxuan and didn't want to face him again. On the other hand, he was simply too afraid to bet.
After all, the Royal Guardian was a specialized card for the Enforcement Squad, similar to a police-issued firearm. No matter how thick-skinned Niwei was, he didn't have the nerve to bet such a card. If he lost, he might end up in jail, sharing a cell with Yusei.
Sure enough, Youxuan soon found himself gaining a reputation in the Duel Arena. Fewer and fewer people were willing to bet cards with him. Even when he entered the arena, people started pointing and whispering, calling him names like "Nether Incarnation" and "Rising Dawn."
So, Youxuan decided to move on and try his luck at another Duel Arena in a different area.
In just one day, he made significant progress. He traveled between various Duel arenas and card shops, opening card packs and selling the cards he didn't need, exchanging them for new packs.
His judgment of card values differed from the general market. Some cards that most people considered useless in the current environment were highly valuable to Youxuan. Conversely, some cards that were highly prized by others, Youxuan found to be of little use and sold them at a high price.
By the end of the day, he had made a substantial profit.
One card, in particular, caught his eye.
Cyber Fishman Gunner
1 Star, Attack 100, Defense 200
Tuner/Effect: If you have a Level 3 or lower Water-Attribute monster on your field, discard one card from your hand to Special Summon this card from your Graveyard. If this card is used as a Synchro Material, all other Synchro Materials must be Water-Attribute monsters.
This was a true powerhouse, still banned in the real world even today. Modern card players would immediately recognize its overpowered nature—able to actively revive from the Graveyard without a once-per-turn restriction.
In today's Yu-Gi-Oh, even effects that don't specify a once-per-turn limit are considered monstrous. The fact that this card has no such restriction makes its ban understandable.
Despite its power, this card didn't seem to be highly valued in this world.
Youxuan could guess why. With only 100 Attack, it was often dismissed as a weakling in the anime world, not fitting the typical Duelist's values. Additionally, its Synchro requirement of using only Water-Attribute monsters limited its usefulness.
Water-Attribute monsters have long been a niche choice, especially compared to the more popular Light and Dark attributes. Even in the anime, most Duelists avoid Water-Attribute decks, so it's no surprise this card is underappreciated.
This worked to Youxuan's advantage, and he managed to gather three Fishman Gunners with little effort.
Moreover, he knew of a powerful Water-Attribute deck from this era.
In 2010, a Frog-themed Deck won the World Championship in Long Beach, Usa. This Frog-themed Deck was renowned for its ultra-high-speed operation, capable of easily retrieving almost any resource from the Deck. Its rapid summoning and field setup, combined with the ability to perform Synchro Summons using the Water-attribute Tuner, the Cyber Fishman Gunner, made it an extraordinary force in the then-current environment.
However, it wasn't an absolute domination over other Decks.
For instance, in the finals of that tournament, the Frog Deck faced a strong counterattack from the previous year's world champion, Black Feather. That match was a grueling battle, with both sides pulling out all their trump cards and putting forth their utmost effort. The Frog Deck ultimately won by a narrow margin, securing the championship in a thrilling finish.
Before entering this dimension, Youxuan had already assembled most of the Frog Deck. With the addition of some components that were not available in the previous dimension, a championship-caliber Deck was now almost complete.
Mentioning this, the Black Feather Deck, as the previous champion, was also on his list.
Compared to the Frog Deck, the Black Feather Deck, with its anime backing, was undoubtedly more well-known. From the start, it was known for its ultra-high-speed playstyle, representing the early era of Synchro Summons with its rapid and powerful attacks.
In the anime, as the Deck of Crow, who was also from the Satellite Zone, the majority of the cards were not too difficult to obtain. Youxuan deliberately opened some relevant card packs and managed to collect quite a few.
In fact, the character backgrounds in 5D's were designed so that the main characters' Decks had low acquisition thresholds. Yusei's Synchro Summoner, Crow's Black Feather, and Jack's Resonator. Given that these characters were all from the Satellite Zone, having rare cards in their main Decks would not fit their character profiles, except for the few dragons that were destined to seek out their masters. Therefore, their main Decks were relatively easy to obtain.
However, Youxuan always found this a bit curious.
The Black Feather Deck was a real-world champion version, and Yusei's Deck, after being developed by card players with the "Scrap Twin" build, was also a powerful mainstream Deck during that period.
It was truly baffling that such strong Decks would be discarded into the garbage dumps of the Satellite Zone in the anime.
New Domino City, Headquarters of the Enforcement Squad.
Rex Goodwin, the highest-ranking official of the Enforcement Squad, stood by the window of his office, his expression indifferent but his gaze deep as he looked down at the bustling city below.
The automatic door behind him opened, and his subordinate, Ego, walked in, bowing respectfully.
"Sir."
Goodwin glanced at him sideways and asked.
"What have you found out about Yusei Fudo?"
"Yes."
Ego spoke in a sharp voice, cackling a few times before continuing.
"Yusei Fudo is in for a rough time this time. I heard that the Warden over there is not someone to be trifled with. He's likely to suffer a bit inside."
Goodwin narrowed his eyes but remained silent.
"Sir, what do we do next?"
Ego looked around, lowering his voice.
"Yusei Fudo escaped from the Satellite Zone and secretly Dueled our King.
Although the news of that Duel is currently under wraps and no one knows it happened, we all know that the result was that the King lost.
The King's undefeated record has been broken, and this could be very detrimental to us if it gets out. What do you think?"
"Hmm."
Goodwin's expression was unchanged, and he said coolly.
"Take care of him."
"Take care of that man named Yusei Fudo."
